The first column gives the intrinsic value of the stamp; the column headed “ N ew ” gives the price of unused stamps, and that headed “ Used” of cancelled specimens. Owing to the growing scarcity of many stamps, it is not possible to have in stock, at one time, all those mentioned in this Catalogue, and it will be weil for correspondents when ordering to give an additional list to select from in case any of those preferred may not be on hand. We will be obliged to collectors if they will write the names of countries alpha­ betically in their order lists. Money sent for stamps not in stock will be returned unless otherwise ordered by the sender. In no case will other stamps, not ordered, be substituted. Our stock is very large, and collectors can depend upon having their orders by mail filled promptly and as satisfactorily as if they called in person. It is needless to add that collectors will get from us only genuine stamps in good condition. The reputation we have acquired in the past seventeen years is an assurance of that, but if more is needed a written guarantee upon any particular stamp sold will be given whenever desired. In the following pages are representations of the Coats of Arms, Devices, Inscrip­ tions, etc., found upon the stamps of various countries, and by the aid of which any stamp may be located with little difficulty. The arms are not always the same size on different stamps, and they are frequently enclosed in a fancy frame, or a wreath, or with a scroll or other device around them. It should be borne in mind that the pictures given are the arms without any of the accessories named, and a little study will soon impress them so upon the mind that they will be known at sight, regardless of what may be around them. These illustrations and list of words and phrases will be found to be of far more value than pictures of the stamps, as formerly employed, and by their aid a stamp without the name of the country upon it can be much more easily located. For instance, the collector finds a stamp bearing a double headed eagle and the inscription, “ /Pais. Kon. Zeitungs Stampel." By looking among the coats of arms he will find the double-headed eagle to be the arms of Austria, and in the list of words, etc,, it will be ascertained that the inscription belongs upon an Austrian stamp. Another has a stamp with a head of Mercury looking to the right and the inscription wholly in a foreign lan­ guage. Looking among the devices as pictured it will be seen at once that the stamp is from Greece, and so on through the entire number of stamps; there are few which can­ not be identified by the tables here given. Leeds Introduction Philately is simply the collection and the study of postage stamps. Design:Sample philatelic materials including stamps, first day covers and stamped postcards, all related to obstetrics and gynecology, from the senior author’s personal archive were grouped according to their titles and evaluated in detail. Setting:We examine how stamp designers use visual imagery to convey information to those who see, collect, and use stamps. Method:Sample philatelic materials, related to obstetrics and gynecology, were grouped according to their titles and evaluated in detail. Main outcome measures:Stamps dedicated to the Obstetrics and Gynecology are usually printed in order to (a)pay tribute to the pioneers of Obstetrics and Gynecology, (b)commemorate important Obstetrics and Gynecology Facilities&Hospitals, (c)announce solid improvements and innovations in the field or (d)memorialize important meetings. Results:The initial use of postage stamps was solely to pay the fare of a postal service. Later on it was discovered that by using stamps it was possible to distribute ideas and news among people and also to inform them about developments, inventions, achievements and historical facts. Collecting Gynecology related philatelic materials is a very specialized branch of medical philately. In general, the subjects of the stamps dedicated to Obstetrics and Gynecology are, pioneers of Obstetrics and Gynecology, important Obstetrics and Gynecology Facilities&Hospitals, solid improvements and innovations in the field and important meetings.

Smith BLACKS ON STAMP AFRICANA POSTAGE STAMPS WORLDWIDE Exhibition Rowe Arts Side Gallery February 13-17, 2012 CURATOR’S REMARKS About three years ago, Chancellor Philip Dubois introduced me to Dr. Esper Hayes via email. About a fortnight later, Dr. Hayes was in my office. In a meeting that lasted an hour or so, she drew me into her philatetic world. A wonderful friendship began. Since then, we have corresponded scores of times. She has also connected me with her vast network of stamp collectors, especially members of the organization she established for promoting Black-themed stamps all over the world – the Ebony Society of Philatetic Events and Reflec- tions (ESPER). This exhibition is the product of networks of collaborative efforts nurtured over many months. Blacks on Stamp is about preservation of memory and historical reflection. The objectives of the exhibition are to: (1) showcase the relevance of stamps as a form of material culture for the study of the history of the global Black experience; (2) explore the aesthetics and artistry of stamp as a genre of representative art, especially for understanding the Africana achievements globally; and (3) use the personalities and historical issues repre- sented on stamps to highlight some of the defining moments in national and world histories.

Alexander Kolchinsky received his Ph. D. in molecular biology in Moscow, Russia. During his career in experimental science in the former USSR and later in the USA, he published more than 40 research papers, reviews, and book chapters. Aft er his retirement, he became an avid collector and scholar of philately and postal history. In his articles published both in Russia and in the USA, he uses philatelic material to document the major historical events of the past century. Dr. Kolchinsky lives in Champaign, Illinois, and is currently the Secretary of the Rossica Society of Russian Philately.
