  • NAZARETH Wild Dogz (Hard Rock)

  • 3Bringing the Beat
BRINGING THE BEAT 25 with the Beatles – I’d seen him a few months earlier and I found myself comparing everything to his show. But when they dropped the covers and did one of their own tunes, you could feel things changing. They definitely had something there. But you couldn’t do a set of all your own songs in those days... and anyway, I was heading towards R&B. When I heard the Stones I knew I was right. The girlfriend didn’t last either! Nevertheless, the thirty-seven -date promotional tour propelled Please Please Me to the number one spot after a gradual climb, where it stayed for seven weeks. DJ Keith Fordyce told the NME: ‘I can’t think of any BRINGING THE BEAT other group recording in this style. I shan’t be in the least surprised to see the charts invaded by the Beatles.’ 3 And, lo! The beat boom had arrived. Finally there was a convincing direction for all the young post-skiffle bands that had been springing up across Scotland – unsure of their future, they’d been influenced by a wide range of musical styles, and that was to serve them well in the coming revolution. And for those who hadn’t struck a note in anger yet, there was a punk ethic at the top of the charts again, fuelled by the four-on-the- floor drum drive. Another generation of Scots reached for guitars thanks to the Liverpudlians – who once, The coldest night of my life was spent in a minibus between Aberdeen and Gills Bay, heading for Orkney, never let it be forgotten I suppose, had a Scot in their line-up.

  • Nazareth Biography You Couldn’T Invent the Story of Nazareth If You Tried
Nazareth Biography You couldn’t invent the story of Nazareth if you tried. At their peak, the Dunfermline rock group were huge, selling vast quantities of albums and pulling in enormous crowds to their shows. By rights, when the group’s profile receded a little and they morphed into the highly respected club-level regulars that they are today, their reputation should have become tarnished – but nothing of the sort has occurred. Nazareth are routinely hailed as that rare thing: pioneers who became legends in their own lifetimes. Like all the best bands, Nazareth came from humble roots. Playing Scottish clubs in their original incarnation as The Shadettes in the late 1960s, the group – singer Dan McCafferty, guitarist Manny Charlton, bassist Pete Agnew and drummer Darrell Sweet – were obliged to perform tongue-in-cheek cover versions of pop hits if they wanted to get paid after the gig. This state of affairs didn’t suit Nazareth and, with a drive that has always typified their career, the band quit their day jobs in 1971 and moved to a grotty communal flat in London. Changing their name and acquiring a manager, bingo millionaire Bill Fehilly, Nazareth signed to the Pegasus label and their fortunes began to change. Reviewing an early Nazareth album, Melody Maker’s Chris Charlesworth wrote: “Perhaps more groups should realise that someone else’s song well played is often a more uplifting experience than an original that’s mediocre.” In doing so Charlesworth identified one of the group’s key skills: the ability to take a song and put an exciting spin on it that attracted public attention.

  • Big Country Book of Lyrics Was Originally Offered Online As a PDF File on a Web Site That Later Grew Into the Remarkable Steeltown Site
THE BOOK of LYRICS Compiled by Michael S. Wallack v2.1 (March 5, 2007) This page intentionally left blank Introduction Project History This project is truly a labor of love. Big Country's music has played a very important part in my life over the last twenty years and this project is, in part, my way of giving something to those who share my love of Big Country. The Big Country Book of Lyrics was originally offered online as a PDF file on a web site that later grew into the remarkable Steeltown site. Unfortunately, the real world intruded and the original compiler decided to stop further updates after the release of the "Somebody Else" CD singles. At that point, I stepped in and decided to assume the responsibility for the Big Country Book of Lyrics. Alas, the real world also delayed my ability to keep up with new releases and the Book of Lyrics fell into limbo. Now, however, it is finally time to resurrect the Big Country Book of Lyrics. Dedication The Big Country Book of Lyrics is, of course, dedicated to Bruce Watson, Tony Butler, Mark Brzezicki, and to the memory of Stuart Adamson. May the music they made inspire us for generations to come. Stay alive! Driving home from work shortly after posting v2.00 of the Book of Lyrics, I realized that I had forgotten the most important dedication of all: To my wife; the first girl that I dated who liked Big Country. She has put up with my obsession all these years, and, since I began this project, has never once laughed at me or told me that I was wasting my time.
