This was immediately followed by the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880 in the colony of Victoria and the success of these exhibitions inspired the Melbourne Centennial International Exhibition, which was held in 1888 to celebrate the centenary of white settlement in Australia. My thesis is that these international exhibitions had a profound impact on the development of our cities, the evolution of an Australian ethos and the gaining of nationhood. The immense popularity and comprehensive nature of the exhibitions made them the only major events in late nineteenth-century Australia that brought the people together in an almost universally shared experience. The exhibitions conveyed official ideologies from the organising elites to ordinary people and encouraged the dissemination of new cultural sentiments, political aspirations, and moral and educational ideals. Many exhibition commissioners, official observers and ideologues were also predominantly involved in the Federation movement and the wider cultural sphere. The international exhibitions assisted the development of an Australian urban ethos, which to a large extent replaced the older pastoral / frontier image. Many of the more enduring ideas emanating from the exhibitions were physically expressed in the consequent development of our cities – particularly Sydney and Melbourne, both of which had achieved metropolitan status and global significance by the end of the nineteenth century. The new urban ethos, v dramatically triggered by Sydney 1879, combined with and strengthened the national aspirations and sentiments of the Federation movement. Thus the exhibitions created an immediate connection between colonial pride in urban development and European and American ideals of nation building. They also created an increasing cultural sophistication and a growing involvement in social movements and political associations at the national level. The international exhibitions, more than any other single event, convinced the colonials that they were all Australians together and that their destiny was to be united as one nation. At that time, Australians began to think about national objectives. The exhibitions not only promulgated national sentiment and a new ethos, but also provided opportunities for independent colonial initiatives, inter-colonial cooperation and a more equal position in the imperial alliance. Andrew Oliver died a few years after Alexander's birth and his mother remarried Mr T. W. Smart, Treasurer and Minister for Public Works under Sir Charles Cowper. Oliver was educated at various schools in Sydney: Mr Cape's School, Mr Taylor's School (later Fort Street Boys), and Mr Carey's School. During this period Oliver lost his left arm in a shooting accident at Bondi. In 1852 Oliver matriculated to the University of Sydney and was among the first group of students admitted to the University. However, his family moved to England in 1854 and Oliver went with them, transferring his studies to Oxford University. He graduated with an M.A. with honours in 1861, and in 1862 was called to the Bar, practising as a barrister in England until 1864, when he returned to Sydney. During his period in England Alexander married his first wife Adelaide Beresford Gwyn, however, she died shortly after the Olivers arrived back in Sydney. On 12 December 1864 Oliver was appointed Examiner to the Council of Education, and on 1 August of the following year he became Parliamentary Draftsman with W. H. Wilkinson, a position he held until 1892. From this time on Oliver was very active in public life, holding a wide variety of positions: Secretary to the Law Reform Commission, 1 July 1870; Registrar of Friendly Societies, 20 January 1874; Examiner of Titles under the Real Property Act, 13 July 1874; Fellow of the University of Sydney Senate 1879-1904; Member of the Fisheries Commission, 1881; Registrar of Trade Unions, 16 December 1881; President of the Intoxicating Drink Enquiry Commission, 1886; Member of the State House Designs Board, 1887; Trustee of the Free Public Library, 1887; Member of the Civil Service Board, 1888.

As a very young postgraduate I was spending three months in the Kimberley district of Western Australia researching the history of the pastoral industry. Being at a loose end that evening I went to the bar to see if I could find some old-timer with an interesting store of yarns. I soon found my old-timer. He was a leathery, weather-beaten station cook, seventy-three years of age; Russel Ward would have been proud of him. I sipped my beer, and he drained his creme-de-menthe from five-ounce glasses, and presently he said: ‘Do you know what was the greatest moment of my life?’ ‘No’, I said, ‘but I’d like to hear’; I expected to hear some epic of droving, or possibly an anecdote of Gallipoli or the Somme. But he answered: ‘When I was eighteen years old I was kitchen-boy at Petty’s Hotel in Sydney when the federal convention was on. And every evening Edmund Barton would bring some of the delegates around to have dinner and talk about things. I seen them all: Deakin, Reid, Forrest, I seen them all. But the prince of them all was Edmund Barton.’ It struck me then as remarkable that such an archetypal bushie, should be so admiring of an essentially urban, middle-class lawyer such as Barton.

    147 Chapter 5. Barnet and the Politicians. The year 1879 sets out clearly the difficulties faced by a conscientious civil servant, with weighty public and professional responsibilities, being confronted with the demands of politicians. In December 1878 the Farnell Ministry had accepted responsibility for the proposed International Exhibition to be held in Sydney. That decision placed a heavy burden on Barnet who was expected, at short notice, to prepare plans for the principal and a number of minor buildings, arrange contracts and supervise construction. While that task pressed ahead, there were other projects which could not be neglected; for example, there was an urgent and continuing need to provide additional accommodation at the hospitals for the insane as well as to design and construct a number of light houses along the poorly-marked coast of the colony. These long-range tasks could not be abandoned even though the Government had insisted that the Exhibition Building must be given Barnets personal attention and take precedence over other work. He met those demands but not without criticism and denigration of his efforts; for his part he refused to be distracted by such opposition from his duty as he saw it. Tasmania . 170 Chapter 1: Introduction In Australia there are four Catholic cathedrals designed in the Romanesque style (Canberra, Newcastle, Port Pirie and Geraldton) and one Anglican cathedral (Parramatta). These buildings are significant in their local communities, but the numbers of people who visit them each year are minuscule when compared with the numbers visiting Australia's most famous Romanesque building, the large Sydney retail complex known as the Queen Victoria Building. God and Mammon, and the Romanesque serves them both. Do those who come to pray in the cathedrals, and those who come to shop in the galleries of the QVB, take much notice of the architecture? Probably not, and yet the Romanesque is a style of considerable character, with a history stretching back to Antiquity. It was never extensively used in Australia, but there are nonetheless hundreds of buildings in the Romanesque style still standing in Australia's towns and cities. Perhaps it is time to start looking more closely at these buildings? They will not disappoint. The heyday of the Australian Romanesque occurred in the fifty years between 1890 and 1940, and it was largely a brick-based style. As it happens, those years also marked the zenith of craft brickwork in Australia, because it was only in the late nineteenth century that Australia began to produce high-quality, durable bricks in a wide range of colours.

Thornton-Smith Introduction "De mineur a ministre" appeared in the latter half of 1896 as the fourth in a series of five short stories set in Australia which Paul Maistre published in the Madrid-based Nouvelle Revue Internationale between 1894 and 1897. The fact that he was a vice- consul of France in Melbourne during this time made it essential that he use a pen- name, with his choice of "Paul le Franc" being particularly apt given his frank comments on the delusions and vagaries of the Anglo-Saxons, including according to him the Scots, against whom he seems to have had a particular animus. All five stories are written from a clearly French perspective, with some of them having a "beau role" for a French character. In this one, reacting to the assumed racial and moral superiority of Anglo-Saxons, he offers caustic comments on such matters as Sabbatarianism, temperance movements, long-winded and empty oratory, lack of commercial morality and obsession with symbols of status. As a consular official doing his best to assist French commercial interests in Victoria, he was particularly exercised by that colony's protectionist policies which artificially inflated the cost of French imports. Just over a century later, the climax of his story has considerable topicality given that, while not quite illustrating the "Plus ca change ..." principle, the excesses of "high-fliers" and financial crash of the 1980s have remarkable similarities in almost everything but scale to those of the 1890s, which brought about the demise of "Marvellous Melbourne".

    ‘Pleasure of a High Order:’ Paolo Giorza and Music at Sydney’s 1879 International Exhibition Roslyn Maguire As Sydney’s mighty Exhibition building took shape, looking to the harbour from an elevated site above the Botanic Gardens, anxiety and excitement mounted. This was to be the first International Exhibition held outside Europe or America and musical entertainment was to be its greatest attraction.1 An average of three thousand people would attend each week day and as recent studies have shown, Sydney’s International Exhibition helped initiate reforms to education, town planning, technologies, photography, manufacturing and patronage of the arts, music and literature.2 Although under construction since January 1879, it was mid May before the Exhibition’s influential Executive Commissioner Patrick Jennings3 announced the appointment of his friend, Milanese composer Paolo Giorza4 as musical director: [H]is credentials are of such a nature both as a conductor, composer and artist, that I could not justly pass them over. I think that he should also be authorised to compose a march and cantata for the opening ceremony … Signor Giorza offers to give his exclusive services as composer and director and performer on the organ and to organise a competent orchestra of local artists for promenade concerts, and to conduct the same.5 The extent of Jennings’s personal interest in Exhibition music is evident in this report publicising Giorza’s appointment.
