Social Media and the Unyielding Flow of Cable News in the Age of Trump Deborah L. Jaramillo, Boston University An early observation about television’s daily architecture warrants a reevaluation as new technologies and shifting viewing patterns call into question its relevance. For all the justified criticism, adaptation, and elaboration of Williams’ earliest description of flow, a return to the general concept helps us decode what is happening on cable news in the Trump era. The new routine on cable news generally revels in the sort of disruption instigated by political turmoil, scandal, a renewed investment in investigative reporting, and the decision of cable news producers to include and fixate on Trump’s Twitter feed. Information flow, Twitter flow, and programming flow live together now, sometimes uncomfortably. The key to flow on MSNBC, in particular, is the way that this new living arrangement moves not toward denouement and relaxation at the end of the programming day as broadcast flow does. The blow of each revelation snowballs so that flow is not just a sequence of possibly connected stories from dawn through midnight. I argue that the crux of flow on MSNBC is actually about memory and magnitude—not the resolution of but the accumulation of politically charged information, crises, and catastrophes across the day and, as we are seeing, across all days. Cable news has created a space where continuity, repetition, anticipation, and disruption commingle; the resulting atmosphere is ripe for continuous, live political catastrophe. Cable news relies on the relentless flow of time to frame its usefulness for viewers. -

It is where journalists have engaged with their work practices, been changed by them, and helped to shape them. This dissertation is a thematic social history of the American newsroom. Using memoirs, trade journals, textbooks and archival material, it explores how newsrooms in the United States evolved during a formative moment for American journalism and its workers, from the conclusion of the First World War through the 1950s, the Cold War, and the ascendancy of broadcast journalism, but prior to the computerization of the newsroom. It examines the interior work culture of news workers “within” their newsroom space at large, metropolitan daily newspapers. It investigates how space and ideas of labor transformed the ideology of the newsroom. It argues that news workers were neither passive nor predestinated in how they formed their workplace. Finally, it also examines how technology and unionization affected the newsroom and news workers, and thus charts the evolution of the newsroom in the early-to-middle decades of the twentieth century. -

It also contains references and endnotes, which the journal’s house style omits. In addition, a chronological bibliography of Mellett’s non-newspaper writings has been added at the end of the article. Abstract: Lowell Mellett was a major figure in President Franklin Roosevelt’s unprecedented communications apparatus. He is largely remembered for his role as liaison between the federal government and Hollywood during World War II. However, Mellett had a major career in journalism before joining the administration in 1938 and was an influential syndicated columnist after leaving the White House in 1944. As his pre- and post-White House service is less known, this article seeks to provide an historical sketch of his journalism career. Presidential assistant Lowell Mellett (1884-1960) looms relatively large in one aspect of the history of Franklin Roosevelt’s administration and World War II. He was the senior federal 1 liaison between the film industry and Washington during the early years of the war. Holding a series of changing titles, he was President Roosevelt’s point man for the Hollywood studios, working to promote productions that supported FDR’s internationalist orientation and the nation’s war goals. -

I want to welcome you to this forum at which we are going to assess press coverage of the war in Iraq, the Pentagon's press policies in Iraq, and what lessons each side learned from that experience. First of all, let me introduce you very briefly to the panelists. You all, I think, have probably picked up your packets at the registration desk where you have more detailed biographies, but just briefly to tell you who's on the panel. In the middle we have Torie Clarke, in her final days now as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs. Down there at the end of the panel, Bob Franken of CNN. He was an embedded reporter in Iraq and will talk about that experience. Next to me here, John Walcott, the Washington Bureau Chief for the Knight Ridder Newspapers. Knight Ridder had more embeds in Iraq than any other news organization, 31 reporters and photographers and one artist. INTRODUCTION Hello, bitches! Perez Hilton, the Queen of All Media, here! I wouldn’t be a self-proclaimed Hilton without penning a book of my own, now, would I? After all, I went through my own rite of passage and gained access to the crazy, sensational celebrity world. But I thought to myself, “Why should I have all the fun?” Like Paris, I’d like to make this world a hotter place. So this book, my friends, was writ- ten for you. In these pages, I’ll show you what it takes to reach celebrity status, and how, with a few wobbly steps and a case of Astroglide, you too can be a hilton! I don’t mean that you should be a street-corner whore (but you’re definitely getting warmer!). No, what I mean is, you can live like the rich, famous, and utterly depraved without even an ounce of talent or dignity. Tired Reid is a good example of a hilton success story. I can’t even remember the last real work she’s done. After all those horrible movies, train-wreck media appearances, and documented drunken partying, you’d think she’d be banned from Hollywood forever. But somehow she still finds her way into magazines and is even popular in Australia! How can someone who’s made suicide moves to her “career”—on the red carpet, no less—still get attention?
