(Bivalvia, Hippuritida), a new canaliculate 11 rudist from the Cenomanian of Slovenia: 12 Abstract 13 Ichthyosarcolites was amongst the first rudist genera to be described. Nineteen species 14 have been assigned to this genus since its introduction in 1812, all from shallow-marine 15 tropical carbonates of Albian and Cenomanian age (mid-Cretaceous). Almost all 16 nominal species suffer from vague original descriptions, and some forms were 17 inaccurately assigned to the genus. Several species were defined on the basis of the 18 number of flanges along the shell, such as Ichthyosarcolites rotundus , I. monocarinatus , 19 I. triangularis , I. bicarinatus , I. tricarinatus , I.MANUSCRIPT alatus and I. polycarinatus . An analysis 20 of the relative position of the flanges on the shell by hierarchical clustering helps with 21 taxon definition. Two species with a single flange are here recognised, one with a dorsal 22 flange ( I. monocarinatus ), the other with a ventral one (I. triangularis ). There is no 23 consistency in flange distribution on the shells whatever their number is, i.e., two or 24 more, and homology of individual flanges cannot be demonstrated.

  • Rudists of Tibet and the Tarim Basin, China: Significance to Requieniidae Phylogeny

SCOTT,1 XIAQIAO WAN,2 JINGENG SHA,3 AND SHI-XUAN WEN3 1Department of Geosciences, University of Tulsa, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74104, ,[email protected].; 2China University of Geosciences, Beijing, China; and 3LPS, Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing ABSTRACT—Rudists are a principal biotic component of Cretaceous carbonates in Tibet and in the Western Tarim Basin. Barremian to Maastrichtian carbonate units are widespread on the northern margin of the Indian Plate and in Tethyan tectonic slices that were welded onto Eurasia in successive stages during the Late Cretaceous and Paleogene. In far northwestern Tibet, Barremian-Cenomanian endemic rudists and cosmopolitan orbitolinid foraminifera occupied isolated carbonate platforms in the eastern Tethys. Rudists, corals, and stromatoporoids composed bioherms up to 10 m thick and several kilometers in lateral extent. A unique endemic requieniid rudist, Rutonia, is compared to morphologically similar but older, less derived genera. Associated specimens in this assemblage are indeterminate requieniid valves, monopleurids, and two genera with three radiolitid species that are re-described and taxonomic positions re-evaluated. In southern Tibet, mainly endemic Campanian-Maastrichtian radiolitid rudists and cosmopolitan larger benthic foraminifera contributed to carbonate shelves on the northern Indian Plate near the Cretaceous equator. In the Western Tarim Basin Cenomanian strata yield Tethyan rudist species. Coiling morphometric analysis using the three-dimensional morphology Raup diagram shows that Requieniidae valves in contact with the substrate are convergent with the basic gastropod shell.

NOTES AND QUERIES. 39 Observations on the Terms " Permeen," " Permian" and " Dyas." By Jules Marcou. Boston. 1862. These " Observations " have been reprinted by M. Jules Marcou, from the Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History, in which he refers directly to the artiyle by Sir Roderick Murchison, printed in the last year's January number of this magazine, and gives a list of dates in respect to the priority of the term " Permian." M. Marcou also refers to his own memoir, " Dyas and Trias," in the ' Archives do la Bibliotheque Universelle de Geneve,' 1859, as treating the two questions entirely distinct. Since the first publication of M. Mar- cou's paper, M. Ludwig, one of the associates of Dr. Geinitz, has been to Russia, and has published the results of his researches, under the title ' Geogenische und geognostischo Studien auf einer Reise durch Russland und den Ural.' We have not yet seen this work, and therefore cannot say of our own knowledge whether it docs or does not bear out M. Marcou's statement that it gives ample facts and sections to show " the inapplicability of the term ' Permian' to the Dyas of Saxony; a term which indeed would not have been for a moment maintained if its typical localities were in a more accessible part of the world." M. Marcou next considers the necessity of the union of Dyas and Trias into a great geological period—the New Red Sandstone. This period he considers in time and space to be of the same importance as the Grauwacke or Paleozoic, Carboniferous, Secondary, Tertiary, and Recent periods.

This new taxon occurs in Ne- vada (USA) and in Guangxi (South China). It has its typical occurrence within the Neopopanoceras haugi Zone of late Spathian age (Early Triassic). The plicate ribbing, suture line and general shell shape are diagnostic of the family Acrochordiceratidae. The large adult size, high degree of involution and subammonitic suture line of Globa- crochordiceras markedly contrast with the next younger genus of the family (Paracro- chordiceras of early Anisian age, Middle Triassic), which is evolute and displays a ceratitic suture shape.
