The Class of 2018 The one hundred seventh annual Commencement exercises took place on Thursday, May 24, 2018, in the St. Bernard-Elmwood Place High School gymnasium. Daniel Hackney was the Vale- dictorian; Sydney Fleak was the Salutatorian. Senior Class Officers, Sydney Fleak, Kevan Ridley, and Vincent Gerrish, presented the Class Gift. The Class Flower was a yellow rose with black rib- bon, and the Class Motto was a quote from , “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it liv- ing someone else’s life... Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice... Stay hungry, stay foolish.” A reception was hosted by the Titan Fan Club after the ceremony.

Finally, no school year would be complete without the Seniors’ last day, Friday, May 18th. This year, several events took place on that date. The morning began with the traditional faculty-senior breakfast before school and continued without pause into the new Career Day activities for junior-high Titan Triple Crown Award Winners students. Mrs. Galster Retires after 34 Years

Mrs. Mary Galster, beloved math and science teacher, retired at the conclusion of the 2017-18 school year. Mrs. Galster spent 34 years as a teacher in the St. Bernard-Elmwood Place Schools. On the last day of school, at the Elmwood Place Elementary Recognition Elmwood Place Elementary Sixth Graders Ceremony, students in Mrs. Galster’s fourth-grade math class honored her during the assembly. EPE Hosts Pastries with Parents Event

Many families joined their pre-K-6th grade students at the first annual Pastries with Parents event held on two mornings in May before school. Members of the EPE Building Level Team served juice and donuts to stu- dents and family members as they entered the cafeteria. Teachers and staff mingled with students and families and had the opportunity to chat about the end of the EPE Running Club Participates in Flying Pig Events school year and summer plans.

For the fourth consecutive year, students from Elmwood Place Elementary were among thousands participating in the Flying Pig Marathon events. This year, students participated in the Tri-State Running Company 5K, as well as in the Kids’ 26th Mile. Students met for 16 weeks to practice in an after-school Running Club to prepare for these races. A lot of dedication and hard work was put into achieving the goal of crossing the “Finish Swine”!

Spring 2018 Reading Enrichment Project Elementary Math Students Learn Algebra the Fun Way During “Project Team Reading,” second-grade Students in Ms. Powell’s fifth-grade math class have fun learning algebra enrichment students at Elmwood Place Ele- using manipulatives and a “whole-brain” approach with materials from mentary completed book projects depicting the “Hands-On Algebra.” The students enjoy using the balance, pawns, and elements of the story, after reading the E.B. number cubes to solve higher-level algebraic equations. “Legacy of Literacy” Writing Contest

On May 8th, three students from St. Bernard Elementary were named winners of the “Leg- acy of Literacy” writing contest. Rosanne Nelson from the Assistance League of Cin- cinnati, contest sponsor, gave Marcus Bar- nett, Will Dees, and Tessa Jewell a plaque and a book collection for their notable written pieces on “Why Reading Makes Me Happy.” Family and fellow classmates were there to congratulate these young writers.

Field Day

This year’s Field Day was filled with lots of fun games, great St. Bernard Elementary Sixth Grade Promotion weather, teamwork, and high energy. The kids were excited to showcase their athleticism and to have fun with their classmates. On Wednesday, May 23rd, the following sixth grad- ers were promoted to the seventh grade and are now members of the St. Bernard-Elmwood Place Junior High School family. The sixth graders worked hard throughout the year with their teachers and are well-prepared and ready for seventh grade.
