Students applying for the ASI program need to be going into 11th or 12th grade in the fall of 2021. Space is limited to 10 students. This form must be completed and returned with appropriate documentation prior to the start of program. No students will be allowed to participate in activities without the requested forms on file. Once your application is received and you are accepted into the camp, you will receive additional paperwork.

Dear JBS Wetland Center ASI 2021 Participant:

I am Linda Dunn, the Education Manager at the Wetland Center, and we are excited to be offering the ASI camp to high school students this summer, sponsored by Oncor Electric Delivery. The goals of this camp are:

1. For the you to gain experience in collecting scientific data through visiting various venues relating to wetlands and using that data to determine the outcome of a specific project they will be working on throughout the week, gaining skills to excel in the classroom. 2. For you become aware of the natural resources in Texas, fostering an attitude of stewardship toward these resources, their importance to the environment and the need for conservation. 3. To offer a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) focus that can be offered through firsthand, carefully selected environmental learning experiences.

You will have an immersive experience during your week at the Wetland Center. Staying at the Center for the entire week, you will take day trips to various natural resource venues located in Texas, the furthest being 2 hours away. Through these trips, you will experience hands-on field study techniques and take the information you learn and apply it to a project you will be working on during the week. We will be using testing supplies supplied by the Center as you collect soil, water and plant samples from these sites, with analysis being done on location and back at the Wetland Center. At the end of the week, we will invite your parents to the Center to join us for lunch and view your presentation on the topic you have been researching.

The ASI: Aquatic Science Investigations summer program is an academic program, and you are expected to participate in all educational endeavors, including project presentations on Friday.

You will be spending the night at the Wetland Center, Monday – Thursday. While at the Center, all meals will be provided, starting with lunch on Monday through lunch on Friday, as well as snacks during the day. You will be asked to help with food preparation, loading and unloading of van before and after daily field trips, putting away lab supplies and thank you notes to be sent to all presenters. Those who choose not to participate in the activities taking place throughout the week, will be asked to call their parents to come and pick them up.
