Interview JUDD TULLY: Tell me something about your childhood. You were born in Manhattan? PAUL CADMUS: I was born in Manhattan. I think born at home. I don't think I was born in a hospital. I think that the doctor who delivered me was my uncle by marriage. He was Dr. Brown Morgan. JUDD TULLY: Were you the youngest child? PAUL CADMUS: No. I'm the oldest. I's just myself and my sister. I was born on December 17, 1904. My sister was born two years later. We were the only ones. We were very, very poor. My father earned a living by being a commercial lithographer. He wanted to be an artist, a painter, but he was foiled. As I say, he had to make a living to support his family. We were so poor that I suffered from malnutrition. Maybe that was the diet, too. I don't know. I had rickets as a child, which is hardly ever heard of nowadays.

    April 2019 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Keith de Lellis (212) 327-1482 [email protected] GEORGE PLATT LYNES PORTRAITS, NUDES, & DANCE APRIL 11 – MAY 23, 2019 Keith de Lellis Gallery showcases the portrait photography of noted fashion photographer and influential artist George Platt Lynes (American, 1907–1955) in its spring exhibition. Though largely concealed during his lifetime (or published under pseudonyms), Lynes’ male nude photographs are perhaps his most notable works today and inspired later artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe and Herb Ritts. Primarily self-taught, Lynes was influenced by Man Ray when he visited Paris in 1925, where he also met Monroe Wheeler, Glenway Wescott, and John Cocteau. Publisher Jack Woody wrote, “surrealism, neo-romanticism, and other European visual movements remained with him” when he returned to New York (Ballet: George Platt Lynes, Twelvetree Press, 1985). Lynes first exhibited with surrealist gallerist Julian Levy in 1932, and was featured at many galleries and museums in his lifetime, including three group exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art. He opened his New York studio in 1933, finding great success in commercial portraiture for fashion magazines (Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, etc.) and local elites. The artist relocated to Los Angeles in 1946 to lead Vogue’s west coast studio for two years, photographing celebrities such as Katharine Hepburn and Gloria Swanson, before returning to New York to focus on personal work, disavowing commercial photography. While his commercial work allowed him to support himself and brought him great recognition as a photographer, it did not fulfill him creatively, leading the artist to destroy many of those negatives and prints towards the end of his life.

The first of a proposed trilogy, but only one other amateurishly produced Blues book was published, The Female Impersonators in 1922. The book features four photos of magazine, which was published in the author: one as a child and three as an adult. Originally available only by mail to Ford’s parents’ home in Mississippi during 1929-30.

    HARVARD SOCIETY FOR CONTEMPORARY ART AND THE HOUND & HORN As a precocious Harvard undergraduate, Kirstein established two enterprises that brought contemporary art to the then-conservative Boston scene. In 1927, he and classmate Varian Fry launched the literary magazine The Hound & Horn, inviting established poets like Ezra Pound and Marianne Moore to contribute works that would be published alongside photographs by Walker Evans and book and film reviews by members of their circle. In 1929, he cofounded the Harvard Society for Contemporary Art with peers Edward Warburg and John Walker III: “It’s my brain, Eddie’s money, and Johnny Walker’s social contacts,” Kirstein said of the collaboration. This pioneering organization presented exhibitions on topics as wide-ranging as modern Mexican art, American folk art, photography, theater design, the Bauhaus school, thevisionary architecture of Buckminster Fuller, and the gouaches of Ben Shahn. The roster points to many of the artists and interests Kirstein championed throughout his life, and it served as a multidisciplinary model for The Museum of Modern Art, influencing Alfred H. Barr, Jr., the Museum’s founding director. KIRSTEIN’S CIRCLE This group of portraits presents the individuals who made up Kirstein’s overlapping social and professional circles. Photographs by George Platt Lynes and drawings by Pavel Tchelitchew, Paul Cadmus, and Jean Cocteau trace a predominantly queer network of friends, lovers, and colleagues who depicted themselves and each other. Among those pictured here are the writer Glenway Wescott and MoMA’s Director of Exhibitions and Publications at the time, Monroe Wheeler, who were in a romantic triad with Lynes, and their friend, the writer Katherine Anne Porter, whose stories appeared in Kirstein’s journal The Hound & Horn.

The only other one she ever wrote, also in Operas and Plays, many years later and in French, was inspired by her white poodle dog called Basket. (Basket by Man Ray) But to come back to Palma de Mallorca. We had been there two summers before and had liked it and we liked it again. A great many Americans seem to like it now but in those days Cook and ourselves were the only Americans to inhabit the island. There were a few English, about three families there. There was a descendant of one of Nelson's captains, a Mrs. Penfold, a sharp- tongued elderly lady and her husband. It was she who said to young Mark Gilbert, an English boy of sixteen with pacifist tendencies who had at tea at her house refused cake, Mark you are either old enough to fight for your country or young enough to eat cake. Mark ate cake. There were several French families there, the French consul, Monsieur Marchand with a charming Italian wife whom we soon came to know very well. It was he who was very much amused at a story we had to tell him of Morocco. He had been attached to the French residence at Tangiers at the moment the French induced Moulai Hafid the then sultan of Morocco to abdicate. We had been in Tangiers at that time for ten days, it was during that first trip to Spain when so much happened that was important to Gertrude Stein.

Addressing the work of writers such as Sherwood Anderson, Sinclair Lewis and others, Van Doren commented that the trend in regional writing, particularly out of the Midwest,1 appeared to be that of a “revolt from the village.” The writers were part of a movement that was harshly critical of life in the small town and stridently casting off the narrow perspectives and restrictive morals that were often characteristic of that provincial way of life.
