International Cities of Advanced Sound INTERNATIONAL CITIES OF ADVANCED SOUND INFORMATION BOOKLET AND MEMBER DIRECTORY CREATED APRIL 2014 2 INTERNATIONAL CITIES OF ADVANCED SOUND WHAT IS ICAS? Founded in 2008, ICAS – International Cities of Advanced Sound – is a global network of independent non-profit organizations dedicated to advancing sound cultures, music, and related arts. The ICAS network aims to support its members in building sustain- able infrastructures to support, promote, and encourage experi- mental and critical sound cultures. Using a palette of transdis- ciplinary approaches, ICAS member organizations reflect on the aesthetic and societal agency of contemporary sound creation with regard to transformational processes induced by digital technology, and actively engage in building bridges between art disciplines, cultural fields, scenes, genres, and audiences. Activities within events and festivals organized by ICAS members include concerts, performances, commissioned work, exhibitions, participatory projects, educational workshops, conferences, publi- cations, and the curation of informal spaces for knowledge-sharing within and among fields. ICAS also serves as an interface to intensify dialogue between its members via knowledge exchange, artistic co-productions, mobil- ity of cultural workers, and more. The network also seeks to foster communication with decision makers in cultural, political, and eco- nomic fields, propose alternative criteria for measuring success and regulating exchange, and increase public awareness concern- ing the issues addressed by ICAS and its member organizations. FACT & FIGURES ICAS is comprised of 34 organizations over 4 continents. Over 250 events were presented in 2013. More than 50 co-commissioned works have been produced over the past several years. Support is received from the EU Culture Programme, the Goethe- Institut, the Trust for Mutual Understanding and more. The ICAS media partner is The Wire, UK. Within this wireframe, Némo Festival, ACME Production Fund, and the upcoming Digital Art Biennial consolidate the work of more than 500 artists through this past decade at local, national, and international scales. FUTURE We represent the first historical French regional fund for new media, and for several years now we have been federating about 20 venues for producing and showing contemporary digital artists. Be it Belgium, Canada, Germany, UK, European, or Asian partners, our exchanges and work methods are worldwide. We federate actors of all sizes in the electronic culture open field, in order to help achieving demanding and experimental artwork projects that wouldn’t be able to be developed within the short- sighted economic system. We tend to articulate an institutional credibility with an up-to-date, realistic artistic production and dif- fusion activity. arcadi.fr festivalnemo.fr 6 INTERNATIONAL CITIES OF ADVANCED SOUND EUROPE ASSOCIATION ELECTRONI[K] Rennes, FR est: 2004 INITIATIVES Maintenant Festival // Origami MISSION For 14 years, Association Electroni[k] has been dedicated to contemporary creation in the fields of sound and image, focusing on multi-disciplinary and innovative projects. Early-on, the organization aimed to promote electronic arts through live shows, performances or installations. It has now broadened to other disciplines and aesthetics such as graphic arts, contemporary or electroacoustic music, while asserting its singularity. Cultural activities set up with different publics (school groups and families, students, persons with major social problems, etc) are now an integral part of the Elektroni[K] project and goes beyond the days dedicated to the Maintenant festival organized in October each year. The organization is active year-round via residencies among school groups, workshops, the Belle de Nuit shows, cartes blanches, etc. FUTURE Association Electroni[k] aims to seed more and more new creations and productions. The festival will continue to take place every year in Rennes, France in October. We are creating a new organization called “Origami”, which works with research labs, companies, and universities in order to create new technological projects. This new organization could also support a new event that is bigger than Maintenant festival. Association Electroni[k] is glad to cooperate on new projects with any countries and continents, with a special interest in North America, Asia, and Europe. electroni-k.org maintenant-festival.fr ICASNETWORK.ORG 7 EUROPE ASOCIACIÓN MUTEK.ES Barcelona, ES est: 2009 INITIATIVES MUTEK.ES – International Festival of Digital Creativity and Electronic Music MISSION MUTEK.ES’s principal activity is the presentation of the MUTEK. Press release | May 30, 2016 The Hague, NL International Festival for digital and transdisciplinary art and creativity 12th Edition September 22nd 25th, 2016 TodaysArt 2016 announces the first wave of artists for it’s 12th edition. Pantha du Prince, Nosaj Thing & Daito Manabe, Hiroaki Umeda and NONOTAK will headline this year’s festival with Dutch premières. TodaysArt is pleased to collaborate with a.o. SHAPE, We are Europe, Lisson Gallery and The Creators Project. TodaysArt, the roving festival for digital and transdisciplinary art and creativity, returns to the city center of The Hague. The previous two editions of TodaysArt were based in Scheveningen, the coastal capital of The Netherlands, which emphasized visual art on and around The Pier. This year’s festival will take place from September 22nd to the 25th of September. Once again it will turn it’s focus on the performing art. The opening statement of this year’s festival is a new Drone Shadow of the English artist, James Bridle. An essential question of this year festival is ‘Who owns the city’. With Drone Shadow, TodaysArt asks this question as it relates to the public sphere of the city’s town square. 'Drone Shadow is not just a picture of a drone. It is a diagram of a political system. Drones are also avatars of all of the invisible networked systems that surround us on a daily basis. They stand in for every remote connection we make. Like the internet, they allow us to see and act at a distance but they may also be used against us and others.

Many medium-sized towns now have their own media festivals. The striking thing is that these festivals are found across the country and not just in the urban Randstand conglomeration of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Some of the festivals have been going for more than ten years (Impakt in Utrecht, DEAF in Rotterdam) others have developed in the last few years (STRP in Eindhoven, Gogbot in Enschede) and there are new additions (Fiber in Amsterdam, Oddstream in Nijmegen). Besides being a national phenomenon, these media festivals are now assuming roles previously played by museums and galleries, namely, that of curator, agent, and commissioner. Virtueel Platform has compiled this publication to map this growing phenomenon better.
