Press Release | May 30, 2016 the Hague, NL Press release | May 30, 2016 ­ The Hague, NL International Festival for digital and trans­disciplinary art and creativity 12th Edition September 22nd ­ 25th, 2016 TodaysArt 2016 announces the first wave of artists for it’s 12th edition. Pantha du Prince, Nosaj Thing & Daito Manabe, Hiroaki Umeda and NONOTAK will headline this year’s festival with Dutch premières. TodaysArt is pleased to collaborate with a.o. SHAPE, We are Europe, Lisson Gallery and The Creators Project. TodaysArt, the roving festival for digital and trans­disciplinary art and creativity, returns to the city center of The Hague. The previous two editions of TodaysArt were based in Scheveningen, the coastal capital of The Netherlands, which emphasized visual art on and around The Pier. This year’s festival will take place from September 22nd to the 25th of September. Once again it will turn it’s focus on the performing art. The opening statement of this year’s festival is a new Drone Shadow of the English artist, James Bridle. An essential question of this year festival is ‘Who owns the city’. With Drone Shadow, TodaysArt asks this question as it relates to the public sphere of the city’s town square. 'Drone Shadow is not just a picture of a drone. It is a diagram of a political system. Drones are also avatars of all of the invisible networked systems that surround us on a daily basis. They stand in for every remote connection we make. Like the internet, they allow us to see and act at a distance ­ but they may also be used against us and others. In order to understand the world around us, we sometimes need to draw it out. If you can’t really describe the world around you, you can’t fully act in it, and are made powerless. When you can describe it, you can debate and critique it. Drawing its shadow is just the first step.’ ­ Bridle James Bridle ­ Drone Shadow ­ 30 mei, 2016 Featured headliners / Dutch Premières Nosaj Thing + Daito Manabe ­ No Reality No Reality is the new performance of Nosaj Thing and Daito Manabe. A 360º live set is created by using virtual reality technology in combination with three large screens and a spot­light­set­up. In addition to the used virtual reality technology, digital visuals from the produced sounds and body movements play their part during this performance. Pantha du Prince ­ The Triad Pantha du Prince presents his most recently released album and performance The Triad. The Triad breaks apart digital interactions to make way for more human interaction. Pantha du Prince contributes his fair share of electronic and innovative electronic music based on minimalistic melodies and beats. Pedro Reyes ­ Disarm / Turning weapons into instruments The sonic art installation Disarm refers to the power of transformation. Mexican artist Pedro Reyes transformed 6.700 destructive weapons into musical instruments. To produce this work, Reyes received 6.700 firearms from the Mexican government. These firearms were confiscated in the Mexican city Ciudad Juarez during the long lasting war on drugs. This exhibition runs from August 26th until September 25th, 2016 in Pulchri, The Hague. Pedro Reyes ­ Disarm Performances The performance program offers modern dance, immersive, intimate and unexpected performances featuring among others Hiroaki Umeda ­ Intensional Particle / Dutch première, Paul Jebanasam + Tarik Barri ­ Continuum and Myriam Bleau ­ autopsy.glass / Dutch première and Soft Revolver. Club TodaysArt presents two clubnights with an immersive and explosive program of techno, house, electronics, footwork and bass & beats featuring a.o. Paula Temple, DJ Earl + The Era, Nosaj Thing (dj­set) and SØS Gunver Ryberg. Bright Collisions The Bright Collisions Symposium is a meeting point with a broad and diverse program. Themes such as creativity, art, technology, science and society will be discussed. During this symposium urgent social developments, provocative statements and inspiring ideas are exchanged and discussed, with speakers including Floris Kaayk + Ine Poppe (The Modular Body), Ali Eslami (in collaboration with Tussenruimte and Re­Shape) and Elma van Boxel & Kristian Koreman (ZUS, Zones Urbaines Sensibles). The symposium takes place from September 22nd­25th. We are Europe + SHAPE / initiatives co­funded by the Creative Europe program of the European Union We are Europe is the newly­created association of eight major European events joining forces to promote, create and ​ produce innovative cultural practices, defined by creative diversity and exchanges. TodaysArt invites the Spanish festival Sónar + Sónar+D and the Norwegian festival Insomnia + Movement and New Ideas to collaboratively compose an artistic and conference program for TodaysArt 2016. SHAPE (Sound Heterogeneous Art and Performance in ​ ​ Europe) is a three­year initiative in which 16 European festival and art centers aim to support, promote and exchange innovative and aspiring musicians and interdisciplinary artists with an interest in sound. TodaysArt 2016 has confirmed the following artists: Antivj, Charlotte Bendiks, Julien Bayle, Klara Lewis, Masayoshi Fujita, NONOTAK, Piotr Kurek and We will fail. TodaysArt is proud to co­present Artist Francisco López presents his newest project audio­DH, a sonic manifestation by 250 creators from The Hague. Many medium-sized towns now have their own media festivals. The striking thing is that these festivals are found across the country and not just in the urban Randstand conglomeration of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Some of the festivals have been going for more than ten years (Impakt in Utrecht, DEAF in Rotterdam) others have developed in the last few years (STRP in Eindhoven, Gogbot in Enschede) and there are new additions (Fiber in Amsterdam, Oddstream in Nijmegen). Besides being a national phenomenon, these media festivals are now assuming roles previously played by museums and galleries, namely, that of curator, agent, and commissioner.     HC Gilje selected works 2000-2016 video:https://vimeo.com/182521274 beacon (2016) Three light projectors each create a beam of light that slowly scans the exhibition space. The light projectors are made of a glass cylinder filled with water and a light that rotates around it. The water works as a lens for the light, and the combination of the glass and water gives the projected light a particular structure that changes subtly as the light moves around the glass. Each light projector is like an inverted light house, the light beams illuminating the walls and the floor and casting shadows of the audience and the other light projectors onto the walls. The installation was created for Gilje´s solo show at Kristiansand Kunsthall in 2016. video:https://vimeo.com/182521275 speiling (2016) Speiling was created for the exhibition Mitt Landskap (My landscape) in Bodø 2016 where a younger generation of artists created works inspired by painter and sculptor Gunnar Tollefsen. In his contribution Gilje created a light projection in a custom built space. Gilje was mainly concerned with the horizon: between ocean and the sky, the floor and the wall. Two organic forms, one black and one white, move and transform on a red background. Projected Light bounces off the floor onto the wall, and light projected on the wall is mirrored on the shiny floor.     MICHELA PELUSIO Michela Pelusio is an Italian Art Scientist, Sculptor, Performer, and independent curator. She has realized ​ numerous major exhibitions and projects around the world. Not limited to the confines of Museum, ​ Festivals and Public Space her practice engages Scientific Institutions and community projects. Her research involves the exploration of human perception, art, science, and technology. In 2000 Pelusio graduated in Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Art of Carrara. In 2006 she got a Master of ArtScience and Music from the Interfaculty Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag in The Netherlands with coaches Edwin van der Heide and Joel Ryan. In 2006 she became a teacher at the ArtScience Interfaculty in Den Haag, teaching courses "Synesthetics" with Frans Evers, and "Genius Loci" with Robert Pravda and Horst Rickels for the bachelor and master students. In 2012 she founded ResidenceSEA - Sensing your Environment through Art in Heraklion a residency for International artists who engage the dialogue between art and science.
