Journey Day 1 - Monday, September 6: Home > Bangor, Maine (KBGR) Welcome to Bangor, Maine, our launching point for this great flying adventure! All participants will meet for introductions and attend an extensive briefing covering the general procedures of our Journey, as well as details for tomorrow’s departure. Afterwards, we will gather for a welcome cocktail before dinner. Hotel : Four Points by Sheraton Bangor Airport included Day 2 - Tuesday, September 7: Bangor, Maine (KBGR) > Goose Bay, Canada (CYYR) > Kangerlussuaq, Greenland (BGSF) 620 + 875 NM Fly over the immense forests and numerous lakes of Canada on our way to Goose Bay for a technical stop. Our flight then continues over to Greenland’s western coast before landing in Kangerlussuaq. Because we will be approaching the Arctic Circle and the “land of the midnight sun”, we will have over 15 hours of daylight! Hotel : Hotel Kangerlussuaq included Day 3 - Wednesday, September 8: Kangerlussuaq, Greenland (BGSF) > Reykjavik, Iceland (BIRK) 730 NM Journey Our Transatlantic crossing continues as we fly to Reykjavik in western Iceland. Upon arrival, we will transfer to the Hotel Borg where we will enjoy luxury accommodations in the very center of Reykjavik. The Hotel Borg central location overlooks the beautiful square of Austurvöllur, and is situated across from Althing, the Icelandic parliament and the cathedral. Hotel : Hotel Borg included Day 4 - Thursday, September 9: Reykjavik Enjoy a full day of sightseeing exploring the splendor of Reykjavik’s offerings. We will set out to the magnificent waterfall Gullfoss; visit the volcanic crater Kerid and the greenhouse village Hveragerdi. Drive across Gjabakkavegur Pass to the Thingvellir National Park, a unique place of beauty, with its interesting geology and history; then cross Mosfellsheidi Heath to Reykjavik. On the agenda are volcanic craters, geysers, waterfalls, the meeting of tectonic plates, and the national park Thingvellir, which is Iceland’s national treasure and one of its most beautiful spots. Hotel : Hotel Borg included Day 5 - Friday, September 10: Reykjavik, Iceland (BIRK) > Bergen, Norway (ENBR) > Stockholm, Sweden (ESSB) 790 + 390 NM Fly over Iceland for a technical stop in Bergen, Norway, then continue on to our destination, Stockholm, Sweden. We will transfer to the Grand Hotel Stockholm. Rich in history and tradition, the more than 130 year old property holds a prime position on the city’s waterfront overlooking the Royal Palace and Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s old town. The town is a timeless classic that has played a pivotal role in shaping Stockholm as the cosmopolitan city that it is today. The hotel has borne witness to some of the world’s greatest achievements. Journey Hotel : Grand Hotel Stockholm included Day 6 - Saturday, September 11: Stockholm Enjoy a city tour with our local guide to visit the wealthy Ostermalm District, with the central city areas of Hotorget and Sergel Plaza and the Renaissance styled Royal Palace. Next we will explore the18th to 20th century building in the Jungsholmen district including City Hall (this is where the Nobel prize Award dinners are held every year). Our drive continues to the southern shore of Saltsjon island for an amazing view of the city from the top of picturesque Fjallgatan Street, continuing to Stockholm’s charming Old Town, “Gamla Stan”, with time to stroll along the charming cobblestoned streets. The hotel’s convenient location allows for ease in further exploration of town, as it sits just across the way from Stockholm Castle and Old Town. Hotel : Grand Hotel Stockholm included Day 8 - Monday, September 13: Stockholm, Sweden (ESSB) > Salzburg, Austria (LOWS) 715 NM Fly to Salzburg – birthplace to classical music genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Situated on the northern edge of the Alps, Salzburg sits like a baroque jewel on the banks of the River Salzach. Hotel Sacher was built in 1866, set on the riverbank overlooking the Baroque Old Town and the Fortress Hohensalzburg, has welcomed leaders and luminaries from the Sir Karl Popper to Placido Journey Domingo. Hotel : Hotel Sacher Salzburg included Day 9 - Tuesday, September 14 : Salzburg Today we will view the historical and architectural landmarks in the city as well as a part of the picturesque Lake District and breathtaking landscapes. We will visit The Salzburg Marionette Theater, founded in 1913 by Professor Anton Aicher. It’s original production was Bastien and Bastienne, a marionetter version of Mozart’s famous opera. The rest of the afternoon is free to relax or explore Salzburg on your own. Hotel : Hotel Sacher Salzburg included Day 10 - Wednesday, September 15: Salzburg, Austria (LOWS) > Florence, Italy (LIRQ) 250 NM Fly to Florence. This capital of Italy’s Tuscany region is home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture. Upon arrival, transfer to Villa San Michele, where modern luxury meets Renaissance splendor. Nestled in the Fiesole Hills, this former medieval monastery succeeds in capturing the romance of Florence. Hotel : Villa San Michelle included Day 11 - Thursday, September 16: Florence Today we will go for a half-day city tour and discover a myriad of architectural wonders and a profusion of exquisite artwork, that make up this cultural masterpiece of a city. Journey The rest of the day is at leisure. Should you choose to continue visiting the city on your own, the hotel offers a variety of optional ways to do so, including taking the city in an Ape Calessino, the 3-wheeled electric car so emblematic of Italy in the 50’s and 60’s. The Villa San Michelle offers many areas to unwind and relax, including their Alfresco oasis, the pool set on a grassy plateau above the gardens that offers stunning views as you soak up the sun. In the afternoon, we continue to cruise the 300 year old tree lined winding canal to Argeliers, once an important clay quarry for the Romans. Hotel : Villa San Michelle included Day 13 - Saturday, September 18: Florence, Italy (LIRQ) > Olbia, Italy (LIEO) 190 NM Overlooking one of the most beautiful bays of the Costa Smeralda, the Hotel Cala di Volpe was built to resemble an ancient fishing village, with porches, granite flooring, arches and stairs. A wooden bridge plunges into the crystalline waters of the sea while the beach is surrounded by juniper and myrtle bushes, typical Sardinian rocks span the bay, helping to create the unique atmosphere for one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Mediterranean. Today we’ll spend the day discovering the wild beauty of the beaches and coves accessible only by boat. There will be time to dive into the crystal-clear water where it will be a treat to see hundreds of fishes passing around us. Enjoy the lifestyle of French royalty in this privately-owned Normandie castle. Set on 800 acres of verdant Normandie countryside and in existence for 1,000 years, the Chateau de Canisy is a historic presence of monumental proportions. Hotel : Hotel Château de Canisy: France included Journey Day 17 - Wednesday, September 22: Caen We embark on a journey of discovery, of the sites of D-day (June 6, 1944) - the largest invasion force in history! Codenamed OVERLORD, it delivered five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy (codenames UTAH, OMAHA, GOLD, JUNO and SWORD). We will walk among the cliffs, bunkers and edges that old soldiers still talk about, visit several museums, D-Day memorials and the very moving American Cemetery. Hotel : Hotel Château de Canisy: France included Day 18 - Thursday, September 23: Caen The Chateau de Canisy is a French Heritage Monument open only to guests of the chateau. Its 800 acres park has lakes and colorful gardens. We will enjoy a guided tour of the Chateau Estate and the Park. There will be a stop in Prestwick for lunch and to refuel.
