INTRODUCTION A consolidated list of Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) rates is promulgated on a monthly basis by the Chairman of the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC). This is an allowance which is intended to account for lodging, meals, gratuities and other expenses of United Nations travellers. The DSA rates are established on the basis of data supplied by designated agencies for duty stations around the world. The rates are intended to relate to good commercial hotels and restaurants. An additional amount of 15 per cent of the average hotel and meal cost is included in the DSA rate to account for incidental expenses (tips, laundry, toiletries, etc.). DSA rates generally relate to specific locations (primarily cities) within a country. An elsewhere rate is also generally provided to encompass all remaining areas of a country. The standard DSA rates are designed for staff in levels P-5 and below. The GA resolution A/RES/58/270 resolved to discontinue the practice of paying higher subsistence rates to United Nations staff members at the Director level and above. Officials in levels D-1 and above receive either a 15 or 40 per cent supplement (depending on level) to the standard DSA rate as appropriate. -

Among all the many peculiarities of the hotel industry, the hotel management contract is likely the most unique. A binding contract between owners and operators which has evolved over almost six decades. In fact, the first hotel management contract was signed for the Hong Kong Hilton, which opened in 1963. The management contract structure allowed hotel companies to expand rapidly and become what is nowadays known as “asset light”. Of course, hotel owners stand to benefit in that they can bring in sound management expertise to their property and partake in the financial upside, unlike a traditional lease model which preceded it. Leveraging their management expertise, operators pushed for the hotel management contract to rapidly become the norm in the industry as a ‘take it or leave it’ proposition to owners. Over time, the hotel management contract has become an intricate web of terms and clauses that defines the relation between owner and operator. The balance of power in this relationship needs to be carefully established, which was, and unfortunately still is, not always a given. Owners need to be on their toes and bring in expert advice from consultants and lawyers to navigate the complexities of an agreement which can bind them for decades to come. -

Butler May, 2016 iv ABSTRACT Selling Mexico highlights the importance of Cancún, Mexico‘s top international tourism resort, in modern Mexican history. It promotes a deeper understanding of Mexico‘s social, economic, and cultural history in the late twentieth century. In particular, this study focuses on the rise of mass middle-class tourism American tourism to Mexico between 1970 and 2000. It closely examines Cancún‘s central role in buttressing Mexico to its status as a regional tourism pioneer in the latter half of the twentieth century. More broadly, it also illuminates Mexico‘s leadership in tourism among countries in the Global South. -

The negotiation of a peace treaty and its successful outcome took the shape of the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923. The Treaty of Lausanne left an indelible mark in our memory. The aspiration of the Turkish nation to live as a free and independent people is thus anchored in Switzerland, a land that earned the reputation for fairness, equity and justice. The subsequent adoption in 1926 of a Civil Code based on the Swiss example, the Montreux Convention negotiated in 1936 in Switzerland giving full sovereignty on the Turkish Straits and other events have solidified this perception. I am therefore particularly pleased that the roots of the friendship bonds between Turkey and Switzerland and the main events associating Switzerland to Turkey have been compiled in a book. The book also illustrates the reciprocal attention and like minded approaches of both Turkey and Switzerland to further promote bilateral relations between two democracies and to facilitate the realization of aspirations of peace. I would like to express my thanks to the President of the Swiss Confederation, His Excellency Pascal Couchepin and to all who have contributed to the realization of this book.
