Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, Department of Bioagricultural Sciences and Pest Management Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO 80523 Abstract A list of 1531 species ofLepidoptera is presented, collected over 15 years (1988 to 2002), in eleven southern West Virginia counties. A variety of collecting methods was used, including netting, light attracting, light trapping and pheromone trapping. The specimens were identified by the currently available pictorial sources and determination keys. Many were also sent to specialists for confirmation or identification. The majority of the data was from Kanawha County, reflecting the area of more intensive sampling effort by the senior author. This imbalance of data between Kanawha County and other counties should even out with further sampling of the area. Key Words: Appalachian Mountains, -

This order consists of all the moths and butterflies. Cutworm moths are common throughout the world. In Canada and the United States over three thousand species are represented, from the Arctic tundra to the arid deserts of southwestern United States. Many species are found in eastern North America, but the family is best represented in the mountains and on the plateaus of western North America. CLASSIFICATION AND NOMENCLATURE In zoology, classification is the systematic arrangement of animals into related groups and categories, and nomenclature is the system of names given to these groups. The cutworm moths are insects that belong in the class Insecta. Insecta is divided into several orders: Diptera, the true flies: Hymenoptera. the wasps, bees, and ants: Coleoptera. the beetles, and so on. The order Lepidoptera includes all the moths and butterflies. Each order is divided into a number of families, and the Noctuidae family, which includes all the cutworm moths, is a family of the Lepidoptera. -

QUBS Moth & Butterfly Species
Queen’s University Biological Station Species List: Butterflies and Moths The current list has been compiled by Dr. Ivy Schoepf, QUBS Research Coordinator, in 2018 and includes data gathered by direct observation, collected by researchers at the station and/or assembled using digital distribution maps. The list is based on a previous list of moths created by Kit E. Muma in June 2008 and of butterflies created by Mark Conboy in March 2011; and has been updated using resources from The Natural Heritage Information Centre (April 2018); The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (February 2018); iNaturalist and GBIF. Three species, which historically occurred in the area, but have been extirpated (e), are also included in the list. All other species are considered QUBS residents. Species are reported using their full taxonomy; common name and status, based on whether the species is of global or provincial concern (see Table 1 for details). Table 1. Twenty one species and subspecies of Exetastes Grav. are recorded from Mexico. Exetastes arteagus sp. nov., E. gauldi sp. nov. and E. lascivus sp. nov. are described as new. Exetastes pasculus Gauld et Ugalde is recorded for the first time for Mexico. New data on distribution in Mexico and a key to the Mexican species of Exetastes are provided. The known Mexican fauna is closer to the Nearctic fauna than to the Costa Rican fauna: 13 out of 21 Mexican species and subspecies (62%) also occur in the USA and Canada, 4 species (19%) also occur in Costa Rica, and 3 species and 1 subspecies (19%) are known from Mexico only. The most abundant species of the genus in Mexico is E. tarsalis. Key words: fauna, key, Mexico, new species, taxonomy. Resumen. Se registran 21 especies y subespecies de Exetastes Grav. para México. Se describen E. arteagus sp. nov., E. gauldi sp. nov. y E. lascivus sp. nov. Exetastes pasculus Gauld et Ugalde es registrada para México por primera vez. Se aportan datos nuevos sobre la distribución de Exetastes en México y una clave para identificar las especies.
