TABLE 1 GEOLOGIC FIELD-TRAINING OF NASA ASTRONAUTS BETWEEN JANUARY 1963 AND NOVEMBER 1972 The following is a year-by-year listing of the astronaut geologic field training trips planned and led by personnel from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Branches of Astrogeology and Surface Planetary Exploration, in collaboration with the Geology Group at the Manned Spacecraft Center, Houston, Texas at the request of NASA between January 1963 and November 1972. Regional geologic experts from the U.S. Geological Survey and other governmental organizations and universities s also played vital roles in these exercises. [The early training (between 1963 and 1967) involved a rather large contingent of astronauts from NASA groups 1, 2, and 3. For another listing of the astronaut geologic training trips and exercises, including all attending and the general purposed of the exercise, the reader is referred to the following website containing a contribution by William Phinney (Phinney, book submitted to NASA/JSC; also http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/alsj/ap-geotrips.pdf).] 1963 16-18 January 1963: Meteor Crater and San Francisco Volcanic Field near Flagstaff, Arizona (9 astronauts). Among the nine astronaut trainees in Flagstaff for that initial astronaut geologic training exercise was Neil Armstrong--who would become the first man to step foot on the Moon during the historic Apollo 11 mission in July 1969! The other astronauts present included Frank Borman (Apollo 8), Charles "Pete" Conrad (Apollo 12), James Lovell (Apollo 8 and the near-tragic Apollo 13), James McDivitt, Elliot See (killed later in a plane crash), Thomas Stafford (Apollo 10), Edward White (later killed in the tragic Apollo 1 fire at Cape Canaveral), and John Young (Apollo 16). -

Expedition 321 Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex Self-Guided Field Trip Facilitator’s Guide BEFORE YOU ARRIVE: Spend some time pre-teaching the history and science concepts for the exhibits you will be visiting. More information is available at www.nasa.gov (click on the “For Educators” tab) and www.kennedyspacecenter.com (click on the “Experience” tab). Make copies of the Expedition 321 Logbook for your students and chaperones. For a bifold booklet, print out the PDF file, make 2-sided copies (invert every other original when collating) and staple in the centerfold (set stapler to 5-1/2 inches). Assign students to teams and team positions. Ideally, there should be four students to a team; two or three teams can easily share one chaperone. Decide which activities you are going to explore. There are 20 tasks in the Expedition 321 Logbook, but it is unlikely that students will be able to complete all of these in a single day. WHEN YOU ARRIVE: If coming by bus, you will be dropped off and picked up in Parking Lot 4 near the main entrance. If coming by car, pay a parking fee for each vehicle. You may pick up your tickets at the Will Call / Group Sales window near the main gate. Have your reservation number as well as any required tax-exempt certificates. There will be a security check of your bags. No hard-sided coolers are permitted inside the complex. For guests requiring special assistance, wheelchairs are available for rent at Information Central. Schulz and his American icon Snoopy since Apollo missions began in the 1960s. Schulz created comic strips depicting Snoopy on the Moon, capturing public excitement about America’s achievements in space. In May 1969, Apollo 10 astronauts traveled to the Moon for a final trial run before the lunar landings took place on later missions. Because that mission required the lunar module to skim within 50,000 feet of the Moon’s surface and “snoop around” to determine the landing site for Apollo 11, the crew named the lunar module Snoopy. The command module was named Charlie Brown, after Snoopy’s loyal owner. These books are a united effort between Peanuts Worldwide, NASA and Simon & Schuster to generate interest in space among today’s younger children. -

In the interior of the lava fountains, the white-orange color indicates maximum temperatures of about 1120°C; deeper orange in both the fountains and flows reflects decreasing temperatures (<1100°C) at edges and the surface. (b) High winds swept the exposed ridges, and the filter cannister was changed in the shelter of a p^hoehoc (lava) ridge to protect the sample from gas contamination. (c) Because of the high temperatures and acid gases, special clothing and equipment was necessary to protect the eyes. nose, lungs, and skin. Safety features included military flight suits of nonflammable fabric, fuil-face respirators that are equipped with dual acidic gas filters (purple attachments), hard hats, heavy, thick-soled boots, and protective gloves. We used portable radios to keep in touch with the Hawaii Volcano Observatory, where the area's seismic activity was monitored continuously. Magma visible in the circular conduit oscillated in a piston-like fashion; spatter was ejected to heights of 1 to 10 m. During this activity, we sampled gases continuously for 5 hours at the west edge. AGENCY: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), DOT ACTION: Policy Statement SUMMARY: This action establishes the FAA’s policy applicable to waivers of FAA ground safety requirements for licensed commercial launch and reentry activities at certain Federal ranges. The Federal ranges that currently meet the criteria for application of this policy are: Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Vandenberg Air Force Base, Wallops Flight Facility, and Kennedy Space Center. DATES: The policy described herein will be effective 3 November 2020. Terwijl geslacht verwijst naar de biologische verschillen zoals borsten, geslachtsdelen, verwijst gender naar de verschillen die cultureel werden opgebouwd. Zo dragen mannen in onze cultuur nooit een rok, maar in Schotland vormt dit geen probleem. Dat wil zeggen dat er naast de biologische verschillen ook een maatschappelijke invulling is van wat mannelijkheid en vrouwelijkheid op een bepaald moment in een bepaalde cultuur betekent. Dit kan gaan over uiterlijke kenmerken zoals rok en broek, maar ook over karaktereigenschappen zoals competitiviteit, assertiviteit, leiderschap (worden als mannelijk gezien) en emotionaliteit, zorgzaamheid, zachtaardigheid (worden als vrouwelijk gezien). Zowel mannen als vrouwen worden (in)direct in de richting geduwd die overeenstemt met het stereotype beeld van hun geslacht. Zo wordt een man die zich emotioneel gedraagt een ‘watje’ genoemd en afgekeurd en een vrouw die assertief is, wordt al snel een ‘bitch’ genoemd. Toch zijn al deze eigenschappen niet mannelijk of vrouwelijk, ze zijn menselijk. (En voor diegenen die nog twijfelen of mannen emotioneel kunnen zijn: Ga eens naar een voetbalmatch kijken). Dat wil dus zeggen dat bij jongens bepaalde eigenschappen worden gestimuleerd en bij meisjes andere. Indien ze zich dan zo gaan gedragen, vergeten we dat dit aangeleerd gedrag is en gaan we snel denken dat het een biologische oorsprong heeft.
