NASA’s Commercial Crew Program is working with the American aerospace industry as companies develop and operate a new generation of spacecraft and launch systems capable of carrying crews to low-Earth orbit and the International Space Station. Commercial transportation to and from the station will provide expanded utility, additional research time and broader opportunities for discovery on the orbiting laboratory. The station is a critical testbed for NASA to understand and overcome the challenges of long- duration spaceflight. As commercial companies focus on providing human transportation services to and from low-Earth orbit, NASA is freed up to focus on building spacecraft and rockets for deep space missions. How is the Commercial Crew Program Different? The Commercial Crew Program represents a revolutionary approach to government and commercial collaborations for the advancement of space exploration. NASA's Prior Approach for Obtaining Crew Transportation Systems Since the Mercury program in the early 1960s, NASA has used an almost identical operating model to achieve its goals of human spaceflight. This includes the Space Shuttle Program and the American portions of the International Space Station. -

Modley, former Acting Secretary of the Navy Every four years, the Pentagon experiences a dramatic leadership turnover, as civilian appointees resign to return to civilian life or move to more senior jobs for an administration’s second term. This places significant pressure on the new team in the Department of Defense (DoD) to form quickly to meet the persistent national security challenges. We must realize that the world broadly is getting more complex, and with it so is the national security environment that U.S. defense leaders must address—and de-risk. How this environment will evolve is unpredictable, but I contend we should expect a future in which the most aggressive of our global adversaries, namely, China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea will continue to push against U.S. influence and the global promotion of liberty, free commerce, and human rights to advance their interests and to fulfill their own national visions… Then, the Naval Community College, as well as the four academic institutions that make up the crux of the Department’s educational system—the Naval War College, Naval Postgraduate School, Marine Corps University, and U.S. Naval Academy—must be fully funded and incentivized to work more closely together in the development and delivery of their respective curricula. These curricula need to place a greater emphasis on history, geopolitics, and strategy, leadership and ethics, and the new realms of cyber and space-based security studies. -

In 1963, Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to travel into space. Sally Ride joined NASA in 1978 and five years later she became the first female American astronaut to fly in space. Tereshkova and Ride's accomplishments profoundly impacted space exploration and paved the way for the dozens of other women who became astronauts, and the hundreds of thousands more who pursued careers in science and technology. These advancements have greatly affected science, technology and space travel, but women in exploration still have a long way to go. Social constructs and gender expectations have often discouraged women from pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and women who do pursue one of these paths are often faced with discrimination throughout their career. -

NASA has a new program, Artemis, that will land the next man and the first woman on the Moon by 2024. Together with our commercial partners, we will test new space systems, gain new capabilities, and with what we learn on and around the Moon, we will take the next giant leap—sending astronauts to Mars. NASA is getting back into its main line of business— space exploration. We are going. You will see this commitment to exploration throughout NASA’s FY 2021 Volume of Integrated Performance. The performance results for FY 2019, and plans for fiscal years 2020 and 2021, show foundational ele- ments of human and robotic exploration deliberately and thoughtfully woven throughout the Agency’s work. You will see it in obvious places, like our milestones for building rockets and spacecraft, and in somewhat less obvious places, like ensuring a skilled and diverse workforce today and in the future. Our activities for FY 2019 and beyond show that we will continue building on our successful history of missions to explore other planets, the Sun, Earth, and deep space. We continue to use the International Space Station as a platform for learning how to live and work in the space environment, and we are building the next genera- tion of exploration-enabling rockets, spacecraft, and systems. -

In the ensuing chaos, a civilian was killed and the unit suffered two wounded and seven killed during the “exercise” results.
