Le développement des technologies de lřinformation et de la communication, leurs usages, dans le domaine des langues, des cultures, de lřesthétique, de lřart, de lřenseignement et de lřéducation, contribuent à modeler aussi bien les comportements individuels et collectifs que lřoralité, lřécriture et lřimage. Ce rassemblement de textes très divers sřinscrit directement dans la problématique ainsi définie. On y trouve des recherches relevant des sciences humaines et sociales, tant théoriques quřappliquées : littérature, linguistique, sociolinguistique, anthropologie, psychologie, philosophie, arts, sciences de lřinformation et de la communication y sont convoquées. Toutes contribuent à la compréhension des mécanismes sous-jacents à la production des formes et des sens et à leur circulation dans lřespace méditerranéen. Cet ouvrage est lřoccasion dřinterroger les langues, les textes, les multimédias, de décrire leurs genres, leurs discours, leurs stratégies, leurs structures et leurs liens avec lřenvironnement (social, économique, culturel, politique, etc.). Il laisse place à lřexamen des croyances (cultures, rites, phraséologie, stéréotypie) des pratiques médiatiques et numériques. Il décrit la genèse des événements, leur réception, le changement des comportements individuels et collectifs. A la lumière des événements qui secouent actuellement lřespace méditerranéen, il se demande dans quelle mesure les médias contribuent à lřévolution et à la libération des idées, des discours, et plus généralement des langues. Dans cette perspective, quelle est la place des TICs/TICEs et de leurs applications (réseaux sociaux, plates-formes collaboratives, applications nomades, etc.) ? Quel est leur rôle dans le rapprochement entre les peuples de la Méditerranée, voire, plus largement, ce qui les relie aux peuples et espaces avoisinant lřaire méditerranéenne. Nous espérons parvenir à expliquer les réalités et les enjeux des nouvelles technologies de lřinformation et de la communication, notamment après leur intégration dans le domaine de lřenseignement, et la mise en place de nouvelles pratiques, réflexions et méthodes capables de donner un nouvel essor, un nouveau souffle à lřespace méditerranéen. 6 Rappelons quřen prenant pour thématique Textes, Discours, TICs/TICEs et Frontières, cet ouvrage sřinscrit dans le prolongement de travaux antérieurs. De nombreux points ici discutés viennent compléter ce qui a déjà été abordé précédemment (Abdenbi Lachkar, 2012 et 2014 a, Amsidder et al., 2013) dont on peut dresser la liste : Situation actuelle des langues et des littératures écrites et/ou orales en Méditerranée Le rapport espaces, langues, médias, textes, discours, cultures et identités : contact et conflit Grammaire, sémantique, phonétique, pragmatique : génération et modélisation Didactique et enseignement des langues Phraséologie, imaginaires, mémoires et représentations Textes, discours et pratiques : réalités, enjeux et perspectives (nouveaux enjeux, nouvelles langues, nouvelles littératures et pratiques langagières et nouveaux médias) Intégration des multimédias et des nouvelles technologies de lřinformation et de la communication dans les pédagogies de lřenseignement : enjeux et perspectives. Nouvelles réflexions, nouvelles méthodes, nouvelles TICs/TICEs : multimédias et enseignement à distante. Communication et héritage culturels, Internet et frontières : réalité et virtualité, visibilité et invisibilité. Médias, réseaux sociaux et frontières linguistiques, culturelles, sociopolitiques et numériques : pouvoir et faiblesse. Identité et frontières : hétérogénéité ou homogénéité ? Si les langues, les discours, les textes, les cultures et les médias sont toujours des lieux dřexposition dřun ensemble de productions socio-langagières et de comportements psychosociaux, aussi bien individuels que collectifs, auxquels nous octroyons la valeur de représentation linguistique, socioculturelle, médiatique, numérique, etc., il reste à définir les frontières qui les limitent ou les séparent dans lřespace de la Méditerranée. Pour marquer la distance, minimale et maximale, à respecter, existe-t-il vraiment une frontière fixe ? Est-il possible aujourdřhui de parler de frontières mobiles à lřère de la mondialisation et de lřouverture des espaces ? Abdenbi Lachkar & Salam Diab Duranton 7 Langues de la Méditerranée: aspects socio-linguistiques 8 Intensification des adjectifs de qualité Nahla AJILI, Université de Sfax Introduction La notion dřintensité a retenu notre attention étant donné la place quřelle occupe dans la grammaire française. En effet, le degré dřintensité est un concept métalinguistique aussi ancien que la description des langues elles-mêmes. A lřheure actuelle, toute grammaire comporte une partie, plus au moins étendue, consacrée à lřexpression du degré dřintensité. Le choix des adverbes intensifs, parmi tous les moyens dřexpression de lřintensité, nous a semblé pertinent dans la mesure où cřest le moyen le plus courant de lřexpression de lřintensité. Ce travail est consacré donc à lřétude du degré de signification des adjectifs de qualité. Dans ce qui suit, dans la première partie, nous commençons par présenter les notions dřintensification et dřintensité : nous étudions, en premier lieu, la notion de scalarité où nous différencions la gradation syntaxique de la gradation sémantique et dans un deuxième temps nous nous intéressons à lřintensification des adjectifs de qualité où nous nous arrêtons plus en détail aux différents classements des adverbes dřintensité proposés par les grammaires et les linguistes. Dans la deuxième partie, nous accentuons notre étude sur les différentes étapes de la réalisation informatique de la reconnaissance automatique de toutes les formes dřintensité des adjectifs de qualité dans la plateforme NooJ. Dans la conclusion, nous récapitulons les principaux résultats lors de notre travail et présentons quelques pistes pouvant sřavérer intéressantes pour de futures recherches sur le sujet. 9 1. Intensification et intensité Pour définir la notion de lřintensification, nous nous basons sur les explications et le schéma de Clara Romero1 qui utilise le terme dřintensité. La différence entre les deux notions est que lřintensification dénote un procès, qui change lřintensité, ce dernier terme indiquant un état « Comme lřintensification peut toujours prendre deux directions opposées, lřeffet est soit le renforcement (augmentation de lřintensité), soit lřatténuation (diminution de lřintensité), […] »2. Avec lřintensité, Romero3 présente l‟intensité comme étant un « écart entre deux états » « au plan le plus abstrait, lřintensité est dřabord une tension. Autrement dit, lřintensité dřun phénomène x consiste dans lřécart (ou la différence) entre deux états x1 et x2 relatifs à ce phénomène ». Nous verrons que lř« écart », qui crée une « tension », est fondamental dans cette définition. Elle constate que tout écart comporte deux aspects : dřune part, il y a « lřamplitude » ou lřaspect « quantitatif » ; dřautre part « le contraste » ou lřaspect «

The first chapter presents an in-depth overview of the history of the Croatian language, its relationship to Serbo-Croatian, its dialect groups and pronunciation variants, and general phonology. The second chapter explains the difference between various types of prosodic prominence and describes systems of pitch accent in various languages from different parts of the world: Yucatec Maya, Lithuanian and Limburgian. Following is a detailed account of the history of tone in Serbo-Croatian and Croatian, the specifics of its tonal system, intonational phonology and finally, a review of the most prominent phonetic investigations of tone in that language. The focal point of this dissertation is a production experiment, in which ten native speakers of Croatian from the region of Slavonia were recorded. The material recorded included a diverse selection of monosyllabic, bisyllabic, trisyllabic and quadrisyllabic words, containing all four accents of standard Croatian: short falling, long falling, short rising and long rising. Each target word was spoken in initial, medial and final positions of natural Croatian sentences.

C ,\,,: 41-------<..<.LI-hY,-""lA""""","""I,--ft-'t _ '" I) Abstract Mustafa Sadiq al-Rafii, a modem Egyptian writer with classical style, is not studied by scholars of Arabic literature as are his contemporary liberals, such as Taha Hussein. This thesis provides a historical background and a brief literary survey that helps contextualize al-Rafii, the period, and the area he came from. AI-Rafii played an important role in the two literary and intellectual schools during the Arabic literary revival, which extended from the French expedition (1798-1801) to around the middle of the twentieth century. These two schools, known as the Old and the New, vied to shape the literature and thought of Egypt and other Arab countries. The former, led by al-Rafii, promoted a return to classical Arabic styles and tried to strengthen the Islamic identity of Egypt. The latter called for cutting off Egypt from its Arabic history and rejected the dominance and continuity of classical Arabic language. AI-Rafii contributed to the Revival by supporting a line ofthought that has not been favored by pro-Westernization governments, which made his legacy almost forgotten. Deriving his literature from the canon of Arabic language, culture, and history, al-Rafii produced a literature based on a revived version of classical Arabic literature, an accomplishment which makes him unique among modem Arab writers.

    77 THEME The Central Islamic 4 Lands AS we enter the twenty-first century, there are over 1 billion Muslims living in all parts of the world. They are citizens of different nations, speak different languages, and dress differently. The processes by which they became Muslims were varied, and so were the circumstances in which they went their separate ways. Yet, the Islamic community has its roots in a more unified past which unfolded roughly 1,400 years ago in the Arabian peninsula. In this chapter we are going to read about the rise of Islam and its expansion over a vast territory extending from Egypt to Afghanistan, the core area of Islamic civilisation from 600 to 1200. In these centuries, Islamic society exhibited multiple political and cultural patterns. The term Islamic is used here not only in its purely religious sense but also for the overall society and culture historically associated with Islam. In this society not everything that was happening originated directly from religion, but it took place in a society where Muslims and their faith were recognised as socially dominant. Non-Muslims always formed an integral, if subordinate, part of this society as did Jews in Christendom. Our understanding of the history of the central Islamic lands between 600 and 1200 is based on chronicles or tawarikh (which narrate events in order of time) and semi-historical works, such as biographies (sira), records of the sayings and doings of the Prophet (hadith) and commentaries on the Quran (tafsir). The material from which these works were produced was a large collection of eyewitness reports (akhbar) transmitted over a period of time either orally or on paper.

Born to the Arab dynasty of the Banu Munqidh, who ruled the castle and hinterland of Shayzar on the Aṣi (or Orontes) River, Usama had grown up in close proximity to the Frankish Principality of Antioch. In the decade following the First Crusade (488–492/1095–1099), the Banu Munqidh and their Frankish neighbours engaged begun his military training. Recalling that time decades later, he remembers that in periodic raids and skirmishes. By that time, Usama was a youth and might have Tancred, the Christian ruler of Antioch (d. 506/1112), had granted a guarantee unfortunate young cavalier was actually heading into a trap that cost him his right of safe-conduct to a skilled horseman from Shayzar, a man named Hasanun. (The ­ Ifranjī eye, but he had trusted in Tancred’s good will.) After describing the initial negotia 1 tion of safe-conduct, Usama adds that “they speak only in Frankish ( ) so we had no idea what they were saying.” To date, Usama’s statement has deterred scholars from investigating the small number of Frankish loanwords preserved in his book, it appears to leave extent of his second language acquisition in greater depth.

(Under the direction of Carole L. Crumley) This research explores the issues of family farming and sustainable practices at two levels. On one level, it compares and contrasts the sustainable farming practices of farming families in Štitar, Croatia with the smallholders as described by the theory of cultural ecology. On another level, it contrasts the European Union’s (EU) Common Agricultural Policy’s (CAP) vision of sustainability to that posited by cultural ecologists and it seeks to understand the reaction of Štitar farmers to the CAP. My research goal is to explore how the social, economic and environmental health and status of the village, which is influenced by local traditional ethics and agricultural practices, fits with the CAP goals of rural preservation and agricultural sustainability.

It argues that the reports on this event developed in three distinct and very diverse regional traditions in Egypt, Syria and Iraq. On the basis of the early Egyptian and Syrian 15 evidence, it is highly unlikely that the conquest of Jerusalem was accompanied by a large-scale massacre of the entire population. This evidence shows furthermore that contemporaries did not see the fall of the town as a momentous event. The later Iraqi tradition, by contrast, introduced not only a new dimension to the massacre of the town’s inhabitants, but developed two further narrative strands which were largely unknown to earlier reports: the plundering 20 of the Dome of the Rock and the subsequent delegation to Baghdad. The development of these strands must be seen within the political and intellectual setting of Baghdad, most importantly the conflict between Sultanate and Caliphate and the profile of the Hanbalite traditionalist milieu of the city. Ibn al-Athir’s famous report from the early seventh/thirteenth century almost exclusively goes back to this Iraqi strand and was an “Islamic narrative” in that it sidelined all previous regional traditions and reframed the conquest as a momentous 25 event in terms of eschatology, martyrdom and divine intervention.

Curry University of Nevada, Las Vegas Introduction The study of Islam has been attracting greater interest in recent years, due to high-profile political and economic events. In addition, the rise of world history programs has generated a need for resources by which both students and faculty alike can strengthen their knowledge in this field. Still, general knowledge on the field is limited. This disparity has occurred, in part, because the field of Islamic history, especially in its formative and medieval periods, has been oriented toward specialists rather than a general audience. Often, world history sourcebooks are content to give only short selections from religious sources such as the Qur’an, the Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad and his Companions (hadith), and perhaps a scattering of political or cultural documents.
