How to use the Atlas The Atlas has two map sections The Main Section shows the location of Russia’s intact forest landscapes. The Thematic Section shows their tree species composition in two different ways. The legend is placed at the beginning of each set of maps. If you are looking for an area near a town or village Go to the Index on page 153 and find the alphabetical list of settlements by English name. The Cyrillic name is also given along with the map page number and coordinates (latitude and longitude) where it can be found. Capitals of regions and districts (raiony) are listed along with many other settlements, but only in the vicinity of intact forest landscapes. The reader should not expect to see a city like Moscow listed. Villages that are insufficiently known or very small are not listed and appear on the map only as nameless dots. If you are looking for an administrative region Go to the Index on page 185 and find the list of administrative regions. The numbers refer to the map on the inside back cover. Having found the region on this map, the reader will know which index map to use to search further. If you are looking for the big picture Go to the overview map on page 35. This map shows all of Russia’s Intact Forest Landscapes, along with the borders and Roman numerals of the five index maps. If you are looking for a certain part of Russia Find the appropriate index map. These show the borders of the detailed maps for different parts of the country. -

Detailed draft conclusions on the representation of animal species from Res. No. 6 (1998) of the Bern Convention in proposed Emerald sites in the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation and Ukraine (Steppic, Alpine-Caucasus and Black Sea) Important Notes: 1. This document includes all species reported present in the countries from Emerald databases (Databases analysed: delivery May 2016) and those species which are probably present according to literature data 2. Glossary: SUF (Sufficient): the occurrence of the species/habitat type is sufficiently well covered by the current ASCIs; no further sites are required. IN MIN (Insufficient minor): no new sites are required, but this species/habitat type should be added to the list of qualifying features on one or several of sites that have already been proposed for other species/habitat types. IN MOD (Insufficient moderate): one or several additional ASCIs (or extensions of ASCIs) must be proposed to achieve a sufficient coverage of the Emerald network for this species/ habitat type (IN MOD GEO means additional site(s) are only required in a specifically named region) IN MAJ (Insufficient major): none of the sites where this species/habitat type occurs have been proposed as ASCIs so far; in order to achieve a sufficient coverage of the Emerald network for the species/habitat type, one or several of these new ASCIs must therefore be proposed. SR (Scientific reserve): further research is required to identify the most appropriate ASCIs for this species/habitat type (research on identifying the most appropriate sites, on clarifying the correspondence of a habitat present to the definition of Res. -

This quarantine species is a threat to ash trees all over Europe. Survey in ten provinces of European Russia in 2019–2020 showed that EAB had spread faster and farther than was previously thought. The new infested sites were first detected in St. Petersburg (110–120 km from the EU border: Estonia, Finland) and Astrakhan Province (50 km from the Kazakhstan border). The current range of EAB in Europe includes Luhansk Province of Ukraine and 18 provinces of Russia: Astrakhan, Belgorod, Bryansk, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Moscow, Orel, Ryazan, Smolensk, St. Petersburg, Tambov, Tula, Tver, Vladimir, Volgograd, Voronezh, and Yaroslavl. Within these, only seven quarantine phytosanitary zones in five provinces are declared by the National Plant Protection Organization of Russia. EAB was not found in the regions along the Middle Volga: Mari El, Chuvash and Tatarstan republics, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara and Saratov Citation: Volkovitsh, M.G.; provinces. The infested sites in St. Petersburg and in the Lower Volga basin are range enclaves Bie´nkowski,A.O.; separated from the core invasion range by 470 and 370 km, correspondingly. -

Skvortsov (1920–2008) was held at Tsitsin Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences (MBG) in February 2020. The Conference was organized by the Moscow Branch of the Russian Botanical Society and supported by Tsitsin Main Botanical Garden and Moscow State University (MSU). Financial support was provided by the Chimmed Group, Moscow, and the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (grant No 20-04-20001). Unlike the previous conferences, the topic was widened to encompass several of the areas of interest to Prof. Skvortsov, namely, microevolution, taxonomy, and flora studies. The Conference took the form of a two-day meeting with an additional short lecture course on plant nomenclature given by Irina Belyaeva Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (RBG, Kew). The 9th Conference gathered botanists from the Russian regions of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Arzamas, Balashov, Borok, Bryansk, Kalach-na-Donu, Magadan, Novosibirsk, Penza, Ryazan, Saratov, Ufa, and Volgograd, as well as Debrecen (Hungary), London (UK), Storrs (Connecticut, US), and Vilnius (Lithuania), 87 in all, who presented their talks and posters, and took part in discussions. -

THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION This country report is prepared as a contribution to the FAO publication, The Report on the State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources. The content and the structure are in accordance with the recommendations and guidelines given by FAO in the document Guidelines for Preparation of Country Reports for the State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources (2010). These guidelines set out recommendations for the objective, scope and structure of the country reports. Countries were requested to consider the current state of knowledge of forest genetic diversity, including: Between and within species diversity List of priority species; their roles and values and importance List of threatened/endangered species Threats, opportunities and challenges for the conservation, use and development of forest genetic resources These reports were submitted to FAO as official government documents. The report is presented on www. fao.org/documents as supportive and contextual information to be used in conjunction with other documentation on world forest genetic resources. The content and the views expressed in this report are the responsibility of the entity submitting the report to FAO. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The forest area of the Russian Federation is 809,090 ha or 20.1% of the total forest area of the world (Global Forest Resources Assessment 2010). The country's forests are mostly natural. Annually artificial reforestation (planting or seeding of native species) is carried out on an area of about 200 hectares, and reforestation by means of promoting natural regeneration (creating condi- tions for rapid stocking of valuable native tree species) is carried out on an area of over 600 hectares, which is very important to preserving/maintaining the genetic structure of natural forests. -

At least 7 9.9M plant specimens (20.6%) are already databased throughout the globe in the standard form of GBIF-mediated data. The contribution of smaller herbaria has been steadily growing over the last few years due to cost reduction, usage of platforms and solutions developed by the leaders. A web-resource the Moscow Digital Herbarium (Seregin 2020b) was launched by the Lomonosov Moscow State University in October, 2016 for publication of specimens imaged and databased in the Moscow University Herbarium (MW). As of 31 December 2018, the web-portal included 968,031 images of 971,732 specimens digitised in MW. This dataset is available in GBIF (Seregin 2020). The global trend is largely the same in Russia, where a dozen herbaria started to scan their holdings after imaging of the nation’s second largest herbarium (Kislov et al. 2017, Kovtonyuk et al. 2019, Seregin 2020a). In 2019, we started to use Moscow Digital Herbarium as a web-repository for digitised herbarium specimens from some Russian collections, starting with the Herbarium of Tsitsin Main Botanical Gaden, Russian Academy of Sciences (MHA). -

The university is a holder of some biological collections, such as herbarium of vascular plants, mosses and fungi collected mainly throughout Tula Oblast and from adjacent regions. New information The collections of vascular plants (9,000 specimens) were imaged in December 2019 and January 2020. Databasing and georeferencing of the specimens from the TUL Herbarium was performed by the staff members of the Tula State Lev Tolstoy Pedagogical University and Tula Local History Museum. Biodiversity Data Journal 8: e56504. https://doi.org/10.3897/BDJ.8.e56504 Abstract Background The Central Siberian Botanical Garden of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (CSBG SB RAS) is the largest botanical institution in the Asian part of Russia. Founded in 1946, CSBG SB RAS is historically a consortium of two herbarium collections with their own acronyms (NS and NSK) and registration in the Index Herbariorum (Thiers 2020). At present the NS+NSK collections contain about 800,000 herbarium specimens comprising vascular plants (680,000), mosses (25,000), lichens (80,000) and fungi (15,000) gathered, not only in Siberia, but also in the European part of Russia and other parts of the Eurasian and American continents. CSBG SB RAS has the third largest collection in Russia after the Komarov Botanical Institute of RAS (LE) and Moscow State University (MW) collections. The dataset consists of 5,384 records of digitised herbarium specimens of vascular plants belonging to 111 families, collected since the 19th century in 54 administrative regions from the European part of Russia and kept in NS+NSK collections.
