Following the Responsorial Psalm, a lector or reader steps back to the ambo and reads the Sec- ond Reading. The Second Reading is taken from the Epistles, so you will mostly hear from St. Paul, but also St. John, St. Peter, St. James and St. Jude. Unlike the First Reading, the Second will not always connect with the theme of the Gospel that day. Instead, an entire Epistle is read pretty much continuously, with the passage being read this week starting where last week’s fin- ished (or close to it). The only exceptions are during Advent, Lent, and Easter when the read- ings will match up with how we should be acting during that season; waiting and penitent in Advent and Lent, and glorying and feasting in Easter.

Its inclusion in the Mass goes back to the beginnings of the Church. In those days, instead of a completely structured week by week reading, the reader would simply pick up from where he left off in the Epistle from the last Mass and continue to read on until the said “Thanks be to God” (where we get our response from). The Second Reading is read during Mass to remind us to follow, like those first Christians to whom they wrote, the Apostles, those sent by Our Lord.

SAINTS IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become saints

At Mass—WE LEARN ABOUT THE NEW CHRISTIAN CHURCH Find the Writers and Letters of the New Testament All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:4 After Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into Heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit into the world so that His followers could spread the good news. These followers became the first Christians, and the new way grew and spread very quickly across the Roman Empire!

Thanks to Paul, Peter, James, John, Timothy and Titus, we have letters to those new Christian communities. These let- ters share messages of hope and encouragement, as well as rules for forming new church communities. Paul is credited for writing most of those letters. And James, John and Peter were able to share their message directly from Jesus. Their stories can also be read in the Acts of the Apostles.

These letters and accounts help comprise the New Testa- ment, or new promises from God. This promise reminds us that Jesus is the Messiah and has opened Heaven for us! These scripture stories are important for us to hear today because they fill us with hope and encouragement as we go into the world and fulfill our duty to spread Jesus’ good news! SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, July 11: St. Benedict—Abbot St. Benedict was born around 480 to a wealthy Roman family; the twin of St. Scholastica. After witnessing the sinfulness of his fellow students, and not wishing to be drawn into that lifestyle, he abandoned his education and began to live as a hermit in the mountains of Subiaco. One day while Benedict was in a cave, the devil tempted him with a beautiful woman from his past. Benedict threw himself into a thorn bush, and would not be tempted again. Monks began to seek out his leadership, but found him to be too strict. Other monks then started to follow him, and it was with them the Benedict established the monastic community of Monte Cassino under what be- came the “Rule of St. Benedict,” which dictated communal living, daily prayer, study, and manual labor.

Monday, July 12: Ss. Louis and Zélie Martin Ss. Louis and Zélie Martin were the parents of St. Therese of Lisieux. Louis was born in Bor- deaux in 1823. He learned clock-making in school, and opened his own jewelry business where he crafted watches. Zélie was born in Alençon in 1831. Louis and Zélie both considered the religious life prior to getting married. The couple had nine children. However, only five survived beyond early childhood. All five of their children entered religious life, most notably St. Therese. The two were the first husband and wife to be canonized as a couple.

Tuesday, July 13: St. Teresa de Jesús de los Andes—Virgin St. Theresa of Jesus was born to a wealthy family in Santiago, Chile on July 13, 1900. She was educated at Sacred Heart College under the tutelage of the French nuns. When she was just 14 years old, she felt called to become a Discalced Carmelite. Teresa joined the monas- tery of the Holy Spirit in the Andes on May 7, 1919 and made her vows. She received a vi- sion that her life would end soon, which she revealed to her confessor. Teresa passed away less than a year later on April 12, 1920 after a period of intense suffering. Wednesday, July 14: Bl. Humbert—Confessor Bl. Humbert was born in Romans, France in the year 1200. He joined the Dominicans in Paris and eventually became Master General of the order in 1254. Humbert was responsible for com- piling the Dominican Rite of the Mass and assembling the Humbert Codex. He worked to bring peace and cooperation between the Dominicans and the Franciscans. Humbert stepped down as Master General in 1263 and devoted the remainder of his life to prayer and study, authoring the Treatise on Preaching during his retirement. Thursday, July 15: Bl. Anne Jahouvey—Virgin Bl. Anne Jahouvey was born to a wealthy farming family in Jallanges, France on November 10, 1779. As a youth, she aided her family in protecting priests during the French Revolution. Anne joined the Daughters of Charity at Besançon in 1800. Around this time she experienced a vision of St. Theresa of Avila entrusting children of various races to her care. She did not understand the vision at first, but eventually came to realize she was called to minister to these chil- dren. In 1807, Anne founded the Congregation of St. Joseph of Cluny who ministered to children of African descent in Europe, South America and Africa. Her order helped educate slaves who were about to gain their freedom. She is nick- named the “Liberator of the Slaves in the New World.”

Friday, July 16: St. Marie Magdalen Postel—Virgin St. Marie was born in Barfleur, France on November 28, 1756. She was educated by the Benedictine nuns at Vo- lognes, from whom she acquired a desire to enter the religious life. She privately made her vow of chastity. When she was 18 years old, she founded a school for girls in Barfleur. However with the start of the French Revolution, and the anti-Catholicism which followed, she was forced to shut down the school. During this period of persecu- tion, Marie helped shelter priests and she was granted permission to house the Blessed Sacrament in her resi- dence. When conditions improved, Marie and three of her friends made formal vows in 1807 and they founded the Sisterhood of Christian Schools of Mercy. Saturday, July 17: St. Alexis—Confessor Alexis was born as the son of a wealthy Roman senator. Despite wishing to give up his wealth and live a life of poverty as a beggar, his father arranged a marriage for him to a wealthy bride. He obeyed his father’s wish. Alexis was able to convince his wife on their wedding day that he head to Syria and live his life for God. Seven- teen years later, an image of Our Lady was reported to have told people that Alexis is a holy “Man of God,” and they began to flock to him. Despising this new fame, Alexis returned to his father, who did not recognize who he was, and lived the rest of his life under his stairs. After Alexis died, a note was found on his body revealing his true identity as the Senator’s son, and acknowledging that he left his wife to live for the Lord in penance. LIVESTREAMS LECTOR SCHEDULE

STEWARDSHIP OF OUR BECOME A PARISHIONER TREASURES Church membership is an obligation of discipleship and love that derives from being united with Christ. At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Conformation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain minimum re- quirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how we look upon them in relation to parish membership.

ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic celebration when the Christian community gathers together on JUNE 27, 2021 the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). Since the PARISH COLLECTIONS Cathedral’s weekly Mass attendance envelopes are the primary way we determine if parishioners are regularly attending Mass, TOTAL $14,062.50 parishioners must place their envelopes in the collection basket every Sunday regardless of whether one makes a financial con- Weekly Budget $15,833.00 tribution or donates online.
