MICHAEL AND ATTIS Twenty years ago, when I was working on the apse mosaics of St. Sophia at Constantinople, I had ample opportunity to contemplate what is surely one of the most beautiful works of Byzantine art, I mean the image of the archangel Gabriel, who stands next to the enthroned Theotokos (Fig. 1). Gabriel is dressed in court costume; indeed, one can affirm that his costume is imperial, since he is wearing red buskins and holding a globe, the symbol of universal dominion. Yet neither the Bible nor orthodox doctrine as defined by the Fathers provides any justification for portraying an archangel in this guise; no matter how great was his dignity in heaven, he remained a minister and a messenger1. Only God could be described as the equivalent of the emperor. How was it then that Byzantine art, which showed extreme reluctance to give to Christ, the pambasileus, any visible attributes of royalty other than the throne, granted these very attributes to archangels, who had no claim to them? An enquiry I undertook at the time (and left unpublished) suggested the following conclusions: 1. The Byzantines themselves, I mean the medieval Byzantines, could offer no reasonable explanation of the iconography of archangels and seemed to be unaware of its meaning. On the subject of the globe I found only two texts. One was an unedited opuscule by Michael Psellos, who, quite absurdly, considered it to denote the angels' rapidity of movement; "for", he says, "the sphere is such an object that, touching as it does only a tiny portion of the ground, is able in less than an instant to travel in any direction"2.

BIERS ewelry that can be associated with an illustrious historical personage is rare; thus, a gold finger ring (Figs. 1 and 2) inscribed with the name of Aelia Eudocia, wife of the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II, is of particular Jinterest. 1 Apart from its inscription, however, there is nothing remarkable about the ring itself, which has a thin, flat, bezel decorated with an incised, equal-armed cross once inlaid with niello, the black, silver/ copper sulphide popular with Byz­ antine gold- and silversmiths for decorating jew­ elry and plate.2 The niello has been partially and roughly removed from the cross, leaving an uneven border around the edge. The circular hoop is narrow and faceted on the exterior, and its two ends, covered by the bezel, have not been soldered together to form a complete ring; the ends are still visible beneath the bezel. The inscription on the 1. A short Byzantine, gold, horizontal stroke separates and niello, the three words, and between the O and C of EVDOCIA there is a third Museum of Art horizontal stroke combined with a vertical one, perhaps intended to be a and Archaeology small cross.     Gazetteer of Stone Quarries in the Roman World Version 1.0 (2013) Hosted by the Oxford Roman Economy Project: www.romaneconomy.ox.ac.uk Ben Russell ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– The following gazetteer of quarrying sites includes all those quarries at which activity in the Roman period is proven or suspected; where the chronology is not clear this fact is noted in the description. Such a catalogue is clearly far from exhaustive. It does not include, for example, any newly identified quarries published in the most recent ASMOSIA volume, though it does include references in this volume to quarries already incorporated into the gazetteer are noted.1 In practice, every urban centre in the Roman Empire, in addition to many rural sites, had one or more local quarries from which they extracted the bulk of their stone. The majority of these local quarries, however, are unexplored and unpublished. There must be hundreds if not thousands of other quarries that have yet to be documented. The aim of this catalogue, therefore, is to draw attention to those quarries that are known about. It is not a complete record but it is hoped that it might form the basis for future research. In this sense it is intended to build on and update some of the existing broader surveys of Roman quarrying, like those produced by Dworakowska and Braemer.2 Where possible the sites are quarries that have been identified as ‘Roman’. In some cases, however, it has been necessary to include sites at which stone was obviously quarried in the Roman period even if no traces of this activity survive.

RESUWER Se presentan la distribuciõn y abundancia de los sifonóforoe epipe- lágicos del Golfo de California, determinadas con base en las muestras obtenidas en cuatro cruceros oceanogr6ficos realizados en la primavera, verano y otofio de 1984 y a fines de la primavera de 1986. Durante este período no se detectan especies de sifonóforos exclusivas del Golfo de California, pero se amplia el numero de especies reportadas para la re- giõn. El calicóforo de aguas de plataforma Wuggiaea atlantica es la especie dominante en la mayorla de las estaciones de colecta en los cuatro cru- ceros realizados. Alcanza densidades inclueo mayores a 10000 organismos en 1000 m3 en algunas localidades, sobre todo en la regiõn de la cabece- ra y en las estaciones próximas a áreas de surgencia. Debido a su domi- nancia determina en gran medida los valores de diversidad para esta ta- xocenosis. Por otra parte, la isolínea que limita a los valores de diversidad superiores a los 2.5 bits por individuo define la m&cima penetración de las comunidades tropicales de sifonóforos, que son las formas asociadas a Chelophyes contorta. La localisacibn geogrbfica de esta isolínea va- r4a de un muestreo a otro, en respuesta a la intensidad de las diferen- tes masas de agua pero ~610 en la primavera de 1984 coincide con una i- soterma. Se emplean técnicas de anãlisis de grupos y análisis de componentes principalee como herramientas para caracterizar las comunidades de si- fonóforos.
