IOM EMERGENCY RESPONSE FLASH REPORT MASSIVE DISPLACEMENT FROM THE GOVERNORATES OF NINEWA AND SALAH AL-DIN IOM Flash Report, 28 June 2014 DISPLACEMENT TRACKING MATRIX: GOVERNORATE OF NINEWA As a result of recent clashes in the district of Hamdaniyah within the governorate of Ninewa, thousands of individuals from Christian communities within the sub-district of Qaraqosh have been displaced to other parts of the governorate, and into the Kurdish Region of Iraq (KRI) where they are now seeking shelter in communities across Dahuk, Erbil and Sulaymaniyah. As of 28 June, IOM Rapid Assessment and Response Team (RART) personnel have identified 2,235 IDP families (an estimated 13,410 individuals). To this point, RART personnel have verified the presence of 1,100 families displaced from Qaraqosh in the Al-Hamdaniyah district of Ninewa to various locations in the Ainkawa district of Erbil, 100 families from the same location to Dahuk City, and 1,035 families to various other areas of Ninewa, including locations in the districts of Akre, Tilkaif, Al-Shekhan and other areas of Al-Hamdaniyah. These figures will be updated regularly as further assessments are carried out in the field, and more information becomes available regarding families accommodated both in public building and with families living within the host community. IOM Iraq RART are currently carrying out assessments in order to establish the locations, population size and needs of these families and individuals, who are largely seeking shelter within public building such as schools, churches, monasteries and sports centers. As a result of Iraqi Security Force (ISF) military operations and shelling of urban areas, approximately 45,000 families from Tikrit and 15,000 families from Baiji have been displaced and are reported to have moved in the direction of the Alton-Kopri, Daquq, Al-Abbasi and Haweeja districts in Kirkuk, the Samara, Al-Alam, Al-Dur, Sherqat districts of Salah Al-Din, and the Qayara sub-district of Ninewa. Some families are reported to have entered Kirkuk, whilst others have headed for the KRI. RART personnel located close to Tikrit in Salah Al-Din have confirmed that many neighborhoods in Tikrit are now almost deserted. Although the situation remains unclear to this point, IOM personnel on the ground in Salah Al-Din and Kirkuk are currently assessing conditions, in order to confirm locations, population size and displacement dynamics, and to ascertain as to whether those displaced intend to remain in their current areas of displacement, or move on to other locations. Information verified to this point is as follows: • Tikrit’s main hospital was shelled last night by ISF helicopters. Medical services have been severely affected and most of the medical staff have fled the city; • There is a significant shortage of drinking water, food and electricity in both Tikrit and Baiji; • There are reports from authorities at hospitals in Baiji and Tikrit that the shelling has led to a large number of casualties among the civilian population; • Most of the families displaced from Tikrit have been forced to move to the Al-Alam and Toz districts. Most of the families displaced from Baiji have been forced to move to Sherqat in Salah Al-Din and Qayara in Ninewa; • Kirkuk RART personnel have confirmed that 800 families from Salah Al-Din are now in Kirkuk city, 500 families from Baiji have arrived in Haweeja center and approximately 500 to 600 families from Tikrit have arrived in the Al-Abbasi sub-district of Haweeja; • Many families have passed through Kirkuk in the direction of both Sulaymaniyah and Erbil (as reported by sources at the Kirkuk check points).
