Tracing Your Irish and Scots-Irish Ancestors Welcome It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Belfast for our September 2016 conference. As the Foundation approaches its sixtieth anniversary I am sure our founders would be delighted to know that their original vision continues to be realised through the Foundation’s contribution to heritage and culture in the province of Ulster and by meeting the aspirations of the Irish diaspora as we help them reconnect with their ancestry. Thank you for helping to make the Foundation’s vision a reality. With delegates travelling from the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, England, Northern Ireland and even Luxembourg to be here, we are encouraged that from across the globe you are joining us for what we hope will be a successful week in the archives searching for those elusive Irish and Scots-Irish ancestors. Rest assured that our expert and experienced genealogists will be on hand to assist you in the quest for your Irish roots. For those of you who will be devoting more of your time to taking part in the varied selection of outings to some of our most spectacular and historic locations, we trust you will enjoy the warm welcome, the gentle good humour of the people, and Ulster’s beautiful countryside – one of our best kept secrets. While I can give no guarantee we hope that the weather during the week of our conference will be kind. The summer has been a damp one, so fingers crossed! During your week with us, should you wish to learn more about the Foundation and our work, please do not hesitate to talk to any of our staff. In addition to our range of genealogical services the Foundation is actively engaged in a host of other activities including book publishing and educational and community outreach. We have an interesting story to tell and would be pleased to share it with you. Should you consider becoming a member, we would be delighted to welcome you to the growing band of family historians who have joined our Ulster Genealogical and Historical Guild. From our reception on Sunday evening to our final outing to the Glens of Antrim and the Causeway Coast, on behalf of all the trustees, staff, volunteers and friends of the Ulster Historical Foundation, we hope you have a truly memorable, intellectually stimulating and enjoyable conference. FINTAN MULLAN Executive Director September 2016 1 GENERAL NOTICES AND USEFUL INFORMATION CONFERENCE BADGES Please ensure that you wear your conference badge and lanyard at all times during the conference. Delegates’ lanyards are red, while the lanyards of Foundation staff are yellow. The staff in some of the archives also wear lanyards which will help you to recognise them. For example, staff at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) usually wear blue lanyards. READER CARDS On your first visit to PRONI you will be issued with your reader card. Your photograph will be taken in the reception area when registering. You will have to present photographic ID when registering. Your reader card should be retained throughout your time in Belfast. For some of the archives in Dublin (the National Archives and the National Library) a similar process will apply. Note: in the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) 2 pieces of personal identification are mandatory – photographic ID and proof of address, and no latitude whatsoever is given. FOUNDATION STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS Most of the Foundation’s staff will be on duty during the course of the conference, and delegates will also have the opportunity to meet some members of the organisation’s board of trustees. There are 5 groups in total. There is a nominated member of the Foundation’s staff (as a group leader) for each of the 5 groups. This is to facilitate the process and to ensure that delegates are not left to queue in one long line for registration. Each group will be called in turn during the course of the morning, so that by the time we are ready to start using the archives, in the afternoon, all delegates requiring a reader card, should be registered. To ensure that we can complete the registration process for all delegates wishing to undertake research as quickly as possible we ask that you cooperate with the directions of the group leaders and PRONI staff. Please note these groupings are only for use on the Monday morning and are not relevant for the rest of the conference. The group leaders are as follows: Group A: Fintan Mullan Group D: Heather Graham Group B: Dr William Roulston Group E: Gillian Hunt Group C: Kevin Keenan . 2 TRACING YOUR IRISH ANCESTORS – FAMILY HISTORY CONFERENCE 3 DON’T MISS THE BUS! Transport has been arranged to all events during the week of the conference. The coach departure times are given in the programme, and a summary provided below. Please make sure that you are at the Ramada Encore approximately 10 minutes before the scheduled departure times. As our programme throughout the week of Tracing Your Irish Ancestors is extensive, it is essential that we keep to the timetable. We would ask therefore that whether you are staying in the Ramada Encore or in other accommodation in Belfast city that you allow sufficient time to ensure that you will be ready each morning to board the coach which will be parked outside the Ramada and must leave at the designated times. The coach will leave the Ramada Encore Hotel (on Talbot Street) each morning, make the short trip to PRONI where those who are researching will alight (apart from the days when we are all going to Dublin on Thursday, 08 September and the Glens of Antrim and Causeway Coast on Saturday, 10 September) and then proceed on the outing of the day. There will be two coaches for the day trip to Dublin: one for the tour and the Registry of Deeds, the other for the National Library and National Archives. Departure times from the Ramada throughout the week are as follows: Monday, 05 September: 08:30 (please note the revised departure time) Tuesday, 06 September: 08:15 Wednesday, 07 Septembere: 08:15 Thursday, 08 September: 07:15 (please note the earlier departure time) Firday, 09 September: 08:15 Saturday, 10 September: 08:45 (please note the later departure time) NB: In order to ensure that the conference timetable is adhered to as closely as possible we ask that you are ready to leave at the correct time. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter but we believe it is important to draw this to everyone’s attention as we must leave on time each morning. If you are not on the coach, we will assume that you have made other plans for the day. ADVICE FOR DELEGATES WHO ARE NOT STAYING AT THE RAMADA ENCORE The main pick-up and drop-off point during the conference will be the Ramada Encore Hotel on Talbot Street, Belfast. For those delegates who will be staying elsewhere in the city during the week, and not in the immediate vicinity of the Ramada Encore, please note you may find it more convenient to travel directly to and from your accommodation to PRONI, Clifton House, the Reform Club, and the Discover Ulster-Scots Centre, etc., rather than journeying to and from the Ramada Encore. ADVICE FOR REQUESTING CHANGES TO YOUR DAILY PROGRAMMES CHOICES Wherever possible, we will make every effort to accommodate delegates where a late change from sightseeing to research or vice versa is requested. Whilst we will endeavour to accommodate requests made by delegates please note that in some cases this may not be possible at short notice. Please note: We cannot guarantee at short notice that restaurants and hotels will be able to deal with specific personal dietary requirements for meals in the event of someone seeking to switch their daily programme selection at this stage. 4 TRACING YOUR IRISH ANCESTORS – FAMILY HISTORY CONFERENCE LOCAL PHARMACY IN CITY CENTRE There is a pharmacy (Formula Health) in High Street, Belfast (close to the Ramada Encore and Premier Inn, Waring Street), there are many more available across the city; your accommodation provider can also advise.
