DATABASES AND DATABASING OF FOSSIL HEMIPTERA

The Hemiptera is one of the “Big Five” of the insect orders, with long evolutionary history reaching . The first catalogues of the group did not cover fossil record of the group; however, the fossil hemipterans had been described and known. The situation changed with papers of Scudder (1882, 1891) and Handlirsch (1906), the lists were presented in works of Evans (1956) and Becker-Migdisova (1962). The data on fossils available up to 1956 are presented in Metcalf & Wade (1963, 1966) fascicles of General Catalogue of the Homoptera . The following list of fossil Hemiptera is that of Carpenter (1992), covering the data available to 1985. In 2004 the catalogue of fossil Fulgoromorpha appeared. Lists for particular groups were published sometimes together with journal articles. The content of these lists was different, from simple enumerations, to commented catalogues, with taxonomic and stratigraphical data. With digital revolution in palaeontology, fossil Hemiptera became also part of various databases and databasing systems. The most important databases are: EDNA – Fossil Insect Database, Fossilworks and Paleobiology Dabase. These are provided and sustained by geologists not entomologists, so taxonomic changes affecting the classification and fossil taxa are not introduced. Fossils are also provided in Species File databases; fossil record of Fulgoromorpha is given in FLOW, for psyllids in Psyl’List – both are now integrated with . HeFo (Hemiptera Fossils Database) is designed to be a new database integrating taxonomic and stratigraphic information. It is complementary on one hand and backbone on the other, to HemBases (Hemiptera Databases in MNHN- Paris) and will be integrated with CoL.
