Lion King, Family Day Offered June 9-10 at OU Art Museum

NORMAN – The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art invites families to join in several free activities over the weekend. The museum at the University of Oklahoma will be screening the Disney film, , on Saturday and will be hosting hands-on art activities for families on Sunday celebrating a new exhibition of 19th-century French master drawings from the National Gallery of Art.

At 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 9, the museum will show the 1994 animated film, The Lion King. Tricked into thinking he killed his father, a guilt-ridden lion cub flees into exile and abandons his identity as the future king. Seating is limited, and children must be accompanied by an adult.

The film is being shown in conjunction with A Century of Magic: The of the Studios, Animation Cels from the Collection of Janis Scaramucci and Domer “Jay” Scaramucci. A Century of Magic features original animation cels from many of the major animated films, beginning with the first feature, and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), and concluding with /2000 (1999).

“We are happy to share not only this wonderful collection of Disney artwork, but also many films and other fun and educational programming to the community,” said Ghislain d’Humières, director of the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. “We hope the community will join us and continue celebrating the magic of Walt Disney, his amazing contribution to humanity and this fabulous exhibition that has been loaned to us.”

The weekend continues Sunday, June 10, with a Family Day at the museum. From 1 to 4 p.m., the museum offers free admission and hands-on art activities for all ages, made possible by the generous support from the Kirkpatrick Family Fund. The theme for the afternoon focuses on the new exhibition, Vernet to Villon: Nineteenth-Century French Master Drawings from the National Gallery of Art.

The Vernet to Villon exhibition opens at 6 p.m. Friday, June 8, with a guest lecture by Victor Koshkin-Youritzin, David Ross Boyd Professor at the OU School of Art and Art History and exhibition co-curator, followed by a free opening reception at 7 p.m. The exhibition includes works by such artists as Ingres, Delacroix, Manet, Degas, Cézanne and Toulouse-Lautrec. The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is the sole venue for this exhibition of drawings and watercolors representing each of the major 19th-century movements.

All of these events are free and open to the public.

The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art is located in the OU Arts District on the corner of Elm Avenue and Boyd Street, at 555 Elm Ave., on the OU Norman campus.

Unless otherwise noted, admission to the museum is free to all OU students with a current student ID and all museum association members, $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for children 6 to 17 years of age, $2 for OU faculty/staff, and free for children 5 and under.
