Through the seventy- five years of Fantasia's history, it has spawned multiple re-releases in both the domestic and public sphere, as well as a sequel film, video game, and series of live performances. As such, Fantasia is a dynamic commodity which has remained culturally relevant amongst audiences. From this relevance, pedagogical value can be derived; the film introduces modes of listening such as Michel Chion's audio-viewing and introductions to the role of narrative in Western art music. Utilizing secondary sources for production history, newspaper reviews, and (auto)ethnography, this project delves into reception history of Fantasia as a means to understand the cultural contexts in which Disney's project can simultaneously exist as a populist commodity and pedagogical text.

Fantasia (1940) and Fantasia 2000 (1999) In this age of 3D, HD, widescreen, 7.1 surround sound — and that’s just in your living room! — it can be hard to fathom how revolutionary Fantasia was upon its theatrical release in 1940. Neither symphony hall concertgoers nor families headed to the movies to catch the latest Disney cartoon were prepared for the breadth and depth of color and sound that poured forth from the screen. Walt Disney (1901–1966) and conductor Leopold Stokowski (1882–1977), in collaboration with the talents of 1,000-plus artists, musicians and engineers at the Walt Disney Studio, the RCA Corporation, composer, author and commentator Deems Taylor (1885–1966), dozens of dancers (including Marge Champion and members of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and Ballet Theatre) and the entire Philadelphia Orchestra, created a watershed cinematic experience that remains a visionary milestone to this day. Sadly, the expense of installing the Fantasound audio playback system in theaters, and the loss of the European market because of World War II, nixed Walt’s dream of an ongoing “Concert Feature,” wherein individual segments would be replaced by new ones. Though the Walt Disney Studio would utilize popular songs in several package films of the ‘40s and ‘50s, it would remain until 1999 and the release of Fantasia 2000, spearheaded by Walt’s nephew, Roy E. Disney, for a Disney-produced feature-length marriage of classical music and animation to once again reach the screen. Jump Cut By George T. Marshall (August 2006) I have always been fascinated by the work of animators and confess I fell in love with the genre at a young age. One of my first memories was as a four-year old child seeing Disney’s “Snow White” for the first time. My dad was stationed in Yokosuka, Japan and we lived on the Naval Base. Movies were a major escape. We didn’t have television—yes, I’m a tad older than I look—but we did have major adventures on the silver screen. I can still remember being enthralled with “The Vikings” starring Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis. I also remember seeing a small film shot in our city. It was called “Escapade in Japan,” and starred Jon Provost. It wasn’t until we returned to the states that I learned he was in TV’s “Lassie,” with June Lockhart. Seeing our city on the big screen and the locations I had come to know as a child only drew me further in to the world of cinema. It was the witch in “Snow White,” that stayed with me, though. And, I remember being panic-stricken after seeing “Bambi” and trying to comprehend the death of the mother. The power of these images remains burned in my memory. Over the last few years, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of working with the Walt Disney’s Feature Animation Division. We were fortunate to host the United States Premiere in 2003 of “Destino” a film that Walt had originally envisioned as a part of a sequel to “Fantasia” in the late 1940s.

He produced several silent cartoons on fairy tale themes before making Alice’s Wonderland in 1923, which integrated live-action footage with animation (and featured the 22-year-old Disney in the opening scenes). Contact: [email protected] Neo-Disney: Recent Developments in Disney Feature Animation Dr. Chris Pallant Introduction The Princess and the Frog (Ron Clements and John Musker, 2009) marks a return by Disney to its hand-drawn roots. Understandably, many responses to the film have centred on its protagonist, Tiana, Disney’s first black Princess. This focus, however, has drawn attention away from the fact that with this latest release the Studio has also returned to a more traditional style of filmmaking.1 Significantly, Disney’s previous 2D hand-drawn film, Home on the Range (Will Finn and John Sanford, 2004), concluded what had been a stylistically progressive sequence of theatrically released features which broke with the hyperrealist conventions most commonly associated with the Studio’s feature animation. Comprising of Fantasia 2000 (James Algar et al., 1999), The Emperor’s New Groove (Mark Dindal, 2000), Atlantis: The Lost Empire (Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, 2001), Lilo and Stitch (Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders, 2002), Treasure Planet (Ron Clements and John Musker, 2002), Brother Bear (Aaron Blaise and Robert Walker, 2003), and Home on the Range, this critically neglected period of feature animation provides the focus of this article; to help distinguish this discrete sequence of films from the larger Disney canon, they will be referred to as Neo-Disney features.

B L O O M FF AA NN TT AA SS II AA Distributed by Walt Disney Productions Released in 1940 wo years after he had created the first full - length animated film, Snow White and the Seven T Dwarfs , Walt Disney released the most ambitious project of his storied career. Ever since composer Max Steiner had applied the concept of original scoring (used in select silent films from the decades previous) to sound pictures, music proliferated. Film scoring, year by year, bore an increasing burden of the storytelling, supporting the varied moods of drama and helping to establish location and time. Some of the world ' s greatest composers, including Aaron Copland and Austrian expatriate Erich Wolfgang Korngold, were writing for Hollywood. And Fantasia was the film that took these deve lopments in a whole new direction...but practically no one noticed. Years later, Fantasia is seen as the precursor for music videos, because the movie ' s visuals were subordinate to the music, which came first. The idea was not all - together unprecedent ed. An instrument developed from the beginning of the 18th century dubbed a color organ, which projected patterns of light corresponding with particular musical notes, was used by composers, most notably Skryabin, looking to extend musical art forms. B allet choreography had often relied on the inspiration of the music. There, adjusting the choreography was far easier than adjusting the music when assimilating the two.
