11/23/2016 Concert review: Symphony help breathe life into video games | Deseret News Family Concert review: Symphony help breathe life into video games By Scott Iwasaki Published: March 29, 2008 12:00 a.m. "VIDEO GAMES LIVE!" Utah Symphony, Abravanel Hall, Friday, additional performance today, 355-2787 With strobe lights, a big video screen, mirror balls and an electric guitar, it was clear that "Video Games Live!" is not a typical symphony concert. And to have the Utah Symphony give two acts of video-game music life in a place other than the TV was nothing short of a rush. By the end of the show, the symphony did exactly what narrator and game composer and "Video Game Live!" co-founder Tommy Tallarico said it would do — "Show how culturally significant video games and video game music is in the world today." Conducted by video-game-music composer and "Video Game Live!" co-founder Jack Wall, the symphony, aided by the Snow College Choir, took the nearly sold-out audience on a journey from the early days of video gaming to the present. Kicking off the evening with the "blip-bleep" of "Pong" and ending with a rousing crescendo of "Final Fantasy VII," the concert brought old and young gamers together. With a symphonic suite, the concert highlighted pioneering games such as "Donkey Kong," "Dragon's Lair," "Tetris," "Frogger" and "Space Invaders," to name a few. In keeping with the "Space Invaders" theme, Tallarico chose a member from the audience to play a giant screen version of the game while the symphony performed the theme.

Rio Conchos was in many ways a reworking of 1961’s The Comancheros (FSMCD Vol. 2, No. 6, music by Elmer Bernstein), but it lacked the buoyant presence of John Wayne and told a far darker and more nihilistic tale of social outcasts thrown together on a mission to find a hidden community of Apache gun-runners. It was the dawn of a new breed of grittier, more psychologically hon- est westerns, and Jerry Goldsmith was the perfect composer to provide these arid and violent tales with a new musical voice. Goldsmith had already scored several westerns before Rio Conchos, including the acclaimed contemporary west- ern Lonely Are the Brave. But Rio Conchos saw Goldsmith marshal- ing his skills at writing complex yet melodically vibrant action music, with several early highlights of his musical output contained by Jerry Goldsmith within. The composer’s title music is characteristically spare and One-Time Pressing of 3,000 Copies folksy, belying the savage intensity of what is to follow, yet his main theme effortlessly forms the backbone for the score’s violent set- pieces and provides often soothing commentary on the decency and nobility buried beneath the flinty surfaces of the film’s reluc- tant heroes.

This raises the question: What makes music epic? No prior research has been done regarding video game music. There is a pressing need to conduct research that concentrates on the musical aspect of video games, because this music represents some of the most significant composition of our time. World of Warcraft is the first successful online epic video game with twelve million subscribers monthly at its peak in 2010. Since the original game was released on November 23rd, 2004, four expansions have been released and the music of World of Warcraft has evolved yet remains epic. This research will examine the particularity of composing music ii for the World of Warcraft, trace back the tradition of epic music, analyze the orchestral scores and original soundtracks, and dissect their harmony, counterpoint, instrumentation, orchestration, form and style.
