Now we all have some sort of moment of astonishment, or some sort of event or happening, which gets us magicians into the art of magic. Roy Walton. Roy is one of the most intelligent people I know. When and why did you start? When I first met Alex Elmsley in the early 1970's - I immediately realised why he and Roy were close friends. They are/were both great thinkers without an ego. Roy enthuses at I first became fascinated by magic at the other people's achievements and his generosity towards age of eight after my uncle showed me others is remarkable. some magic tricks using cards, coins, matches and chalk. Downloaded from www.vanishingincmagic.com by Ray Hyman AcknowledgEments Magic in Mind started out as a project intended expressly for serious young magicians, but the first of many lessons I learned during my two-year endeavor is this: age has little to do with learning. It was evident, early on, that this collection would benefitanyone serious about getting serious in magic. So here we are. Thanks to all the generous magicians who have allowed me to include their work in this collection. I am overwhelmed by the support they have shown. In particular, I wish to single out Darwin Ortiz, whose writings I admire greatly, and who went against a personal policy, and agreed to participate. I consider it a favor to me, and a favor to all those who will learn from his writings. Thanks, Darwin, for being flexible and generous. Thanks to Stephen Minch, whose encouragement and “pull” helped initiate the project. Irving Quant helped with the translation of “Fundamentals of Illusionism” by Juan Tamariz. Denis Behr suggested a few essays I was not familiar with. -

Contents Scatter Shot A multi-phased Ace production specifically designed for an opener. The Aces literally seem to come from everywhere, right up to the mind- blowing finish. Favouritism A spectator nominates their lucky Jack to find two selected cards, but discovers it can do much better than that! A great ‘kick back’ style routine. Psychic Blackjack Lay out four blackjack hands, and then loan the spectator a poker chip in order to make a bet on your behalf. They have a completely free choice, but they always pick the hand that’s best for you… Hard to Read A demonstration that appears to be all about watching for a spectators ‘tell’ and reading their poker face to reveal their selection, but is really about winning, by any means necessary! X-Static A very efficient sandwich routine that boils down to literally one move that does everything – great card magic has never been lazier! The Big Squeeze A simple and off-beat variation of the Hofsinzer Lost Ace Problem, where the Aces reveal the suit and value of a selection, before being squeezed together to produce the card! Equidistant Transpo A streamlined take on a notoriously difficult plot that sees two packets of cards transposing, despite being buried in different sections of the deck. -

Ravenswood Ave. -Suite 116- Chicago, Illinois 60617 Introduction ollywood became the center of the magic world in 1963. That year, Dai Vernon, known to Hmagicians world wide as “The Professor,” moved to California. On arrival, Vernon took up residence at the Magic Castle, where he would remain a fixture for the next 25 years — and become an icon. From the Castle flowed Vernon’s dictum of natural magic; he avowed deep study of the art as a route to perfection. These and other mantras he would impart both through the written word and in person, to countless associates, fans and students. In 1964, a Midwestern sleight-of-hand artist, Bruce Cervon, also moved west. Southern California, he’d been assuredd, was the nexus of all things magical. The Magic Castle was the place to perform close-up magic. And Vernon was there. Almost immediately upon their initial meeting, Cervon and Vernon developed a strong, important friendship and student/teacher relationship. From their sessions came weighty ideas, concepts and published works: most prominently, Cervon’s Castle Notebooks and The Vernon Chronicles.
