Storm Large: musician, actor, playwright, author, awesome. She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova, where despite having been eliminated in the week before the finale, Storm built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day.

Storm spent the 90s singing in clubs throughout San Francisco. Tired of the club scene, she moved to Portland to pursue a new career as a chef, but a last-minute cancellation in 2002 at the Portland club, Dante’s, turned into a standing Wednesday night engagement for Storm and her new band, The Balls. It wasn’t long before Storm had a cult-like following in Portland, and a renewed singing career that was soon to be launched onto the international stage.

The 17-18 season included debuts with the San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Vancouver, Jacksonville, and RTÉ National Symphonies, as well as return engagements with the Houston, Toronto, and Toledo Symphonies. Storm and her band, Le Bonheur, continue to tour concert halls across the country. The 16-17 season included debuts with the Atlanta, Baltimore, and BBC Symphony Orchestras, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, as well as return engagements with National Symphony Orchestra and Detroit Symphony Orchestra.

Recent highlights include engagements with the New York Pops, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, Memphis Symphony, and the Knights, as well as performances at the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago. She joined Michael Feinstein as special guest on the Jazz at Lincoln Center Popular Song series, as well as with Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey and the Pasadena Pops.

29 Storm made her debut as guest vocalist with the band Pink Martini in April 2011, singing four sold-out concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. She continues to perform with the band, touring nationally and internationally, and she was featured on their CD, Get Happy. Storm has also sung with Grammy winner k.d. lang, pianist Kirill Gerstein, punk rocker John Doe, singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright, and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton.

She debuted with the Oregon Symphony in 2010 and has returned for sold-out performances each year thereafter. Storm made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2013, singing Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins with the Detroit Symphony as part of the Spring for Music festival. TheNY Times called her “sensational,” and the classical music world instantly had a new star.

In 2007, Storm starred in Portland Center Stage’s production of Cabaret with Wade McCollum. The show was a smash hit, earning Large glowing reviews. Her next endeavor, the autobiographical musical memoir, Crazy Enough, played to packed houses in 2009 during its unprecedented 21-week, sold-out run in Portland. Storm went on to perform a cabaret version of the show to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival in Australia, and Joe’s Pub in New York. Her memoir, Crazy Enough, was released by Simon and Schuster in 2012, named Oprah’s Book of the Week, and awarded the 2013 Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction.

Storm is featured in Rid of Me, a film by Portlander James Westby, starring Katie O’Grady and Theresa Russell. In 2010, she starred at the Mark Taper Forum with Katey Sagal and Michael McKean in Jerry Zak’s production of Harps and Angels, a musical featuring the work of Randy Newman.

In the fall of 2014, Storm & Le Bonheur released a record designed to capture their sublime and subversive interpretations of the American Songbook. Entitled simply Le Bonheur and released on Pink Martini’s Heinz Records, the recording is a collection of tortured and entertaining love songs: beautiful, familiar, yet twisted … much like the lady herself.

32 BLACK VIOLIN IMPOSSIBLE TOUR

Wil B., viola Kev Marcus, violin DJ SPS Nat Stokes, drummer

Tonight’s program will be announced from the stage.

Black Violin is led by classically trained string players Wil B. (viola) and Kev Marcus (violin). Joining them onstage are DJ SPS and drummer Nat Stokes. The band uses their unique blend of classical and hip-hop music to overcome stereotypes while encouraging people of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds to join together to break down cultural barriers. In the past 12 months, the band has performed for over 100,000 students in the U.S. and Europe, and has partnered with Yamaha and NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) to continue supporting music education.

Black Violin, alongside artists such as Yo-Yo Ma and , recently joined with Turnaround Arts to bring arts education to struggling schools in underserved communities. Turnaround Arts is a program of the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts founded by President Obama’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities in 2012. In addition, Black Violin has composed for a major Fox Television original, Pitch, and has been featured by ESPN as the official artist of the 2017 U.S. Open (tennis) and 2016 & 2017 Heisman Trophy Award ceremonies. They have been featured onThe Tonight Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Wendy Williams Show, NPR, and more.

The group has collaborated creatively with artists such as , Aerosmith, Tom Petty, Wu-Tang Clan, Wyclef Jean and . Their most recent album, Stereotypes, hit #1 on Billboard’s Classical Crossover chart and #4 on Billboard’s R&B Chart.

The band recently released their track “Showoff,” as well as an accompanying video. Black Violin’s next studio album, Take the Stairs, is set to be released in November.

Tonight’s performance will run approximately 90 minutes.

33 BIO “We had a wall that we wrote stuff on,” says Wil Baptiste, describing the process that led to Black Violin’s new album, Take the Stairs. “We had all the ideas about what story we were going to convey. And it kept coming back to the idea of hope— songs that spoke about going against the grain, carrying on through struggle, being optimistic. We wanted to say, ‘its tough now, but hang in there.’”

Much like the ways their instruments interact on stage, Wil’s creative collaborator, Kev Marcus, echoes this theme, and then expands it. “Hope is the thread that keeps this thing together, it’s the heartbeat of this album,” he says. “But then a lot of tentacles went different ways: the song ‘Impossible is Possible’ is about challenging people. So it went different directions from just being hopeful … we took it a little further.”

The first single released ahead of Take the Stairs was the timely and inspiring “Dreamer,” with a message that was immediately embraced by several commercial campaigns. “This is the day when I go all the way/I make it my own/Here’s to the dreamers,” sings Wil. “That just really hit home,” says Kev. “It got to the heart of what we’re about.”

For more than a dozen years, Black Violin has been all about taking things further, exceeding expectations, challenging conventions. The classical-meets-hip-hop duo has steadily built a devoted following and a diverse touring base, while occupying a musical lane that’s entirely its own.

“When you do something you love, it’s not difficult,” says Wil. “I’m just going on stage and being who I am. When people want to listen, when you touch them and make them want to keep fighting – to see that spreading out to more people, it’s about way more than just the music.”

Indeed, Black Violin’s work extends far beyond the stage, reaching deep into urban communities with numerous free performances for students and hands- on engagement with youth symphonies and community centers. Through the Turnaround Arts program, Wil and Kev connect with more than 100,000 students throughout the year, mostly at low-income and Title 1 schools, and adopted Bethune Elementary in Florida’s Broward County (near where they grew up) to initiate an ongoing mentorship program.

Wil expresses the idea that, no matter how unique Black Violin’s music may be, it is ultimately more than just a creative enterprise. “It’s really a movement,” he says, “an organism that’s its own thing and really feels necessary.”

With Take the Stairs, Black Violin is striving to take their message of unity and inclusiveness even further, moving Wil’s vocals further forward while continuing to explore the possibilities of merging classical virtuosity and structure with modern beats and tones. “We wanted something different, beautiful songs that could go to radio,” says Wil. “I sing every night, so that’s nothing new, but we felt like we’ve never had that one song that can help elevate us to the next level. This album has records like ‘One Step’ that can appeal to everybody, so we lean a bit more on that, but we still had to keep that quintessential Black Violin sound.”

34 “When you’re a creative musician,” adds Kev, “when you press a record, you let the music lead you. The vocals have definitely stepped up each time; Wil becomes more of a vocalist on each album and finds his voice a little more. It solidifies us as artists, too, trying to make a bigger stamp.”

The members of Black Violin first met in Ft. Lauderdale and played together in the orchestra at the Dillard High School of the Performing Arts. (Baptiste originally wanted to play saxophone in the band, but the orchestra teacher got him assigned to his class by winning a golf bet with the band instructor.) Classically trained by day, they faithfully put on their headphones and listened to the hottest rap records each night. They went to different colleges – Marcus attended Florida International University and Wil B. went to Florida State – but then reconvened, moved into an apartment together, and started trying to produce other musicians.

They developed an act covering hip-hop songs on their , which became popular in local clubs. Two years after sending in a tape to Showtime at the Apollo, they were invited to appear on the show, which they won … and kept winning.

They were approached by the manager of Alicia Keys, who asked them to perform with the singer on the Billboard Awards. Other offers followed: they toured with of , opened for the Wu-Tang Clan, scored an episode of CSI: New York. Individually and together, Wil and Kev have worked with everyone from Kanye West to Tom Petty, to Aerosmith. All the while, Black Violin continued touring non-stop ( as many as 200 shows a year) and released two independent, self-financed albums before putting out the acclaimed Stereotypes in 2016.

The 13 tracks on Take the Stairs reveal the range and diversity of their influences and vocabulary, from “Showoff” (which Wil calls a “classic instrumental”) to the Curtis Mayfield-inspired “Lost in the Garden.” One favorite is “A Way Home” … “That record should be the Olympics theme song!” says Wil. “I can see us going from country to country, engaging with different cultures. I played it for my wife, and she started crying. That’s a special song right there.”

Kev notes that “inspiration can come from anywhere. The cable guy played me an Ethiopian tune when he was fixing my modem.” He points to the track “Al Green” as an example of the journey that Black Violin songs can take. “I had a Dvořák piece called ‘Slavonic Dancers,’ and I was into that vibe,” he says. “I played it for Salaam Remi [who has worked with the likes of Nas, Amy Winehouse, and the Fugees, and coproduced and is featured on several Take the Stairs tracks] and he said, ‘That has a cool bounce to it. Let’s funk out that groove and put an Al Green-style bass line on it.’ We both played violas over that, which I’d never heard. So that one is funk-mixed with a Czech Slavonic dance, with an Al Green sample and viola solos.”

The members of Black Violin both point to their own personal evolution and maturity, and to the ways this growth came out on Take the Stairs. “This time, every ‘I’ is dotted and ‘T’ is crossed,” says Kev. “There was a rush to the last album, a deadline we had to hit after we signed our record deal. This one we funded and produced ourselves, then shopped the record. So it was a really well-thought-out and more deliberate process;

35 we had more time to live with everything and feel comfortable with it.”

Wil says that Black Violin isn’t always explicit with its message, but that they don’t have to be … that the creation of an audience that is multi-generational, ethnically and economically diverse, is a powerful statement of its own. “The stereotypes are always there, embedded so deep in our culture,” he says. “Just by nature of our existence – the idea that these black guys who could be football or basketball players are playing the violin – we challenge those ideas. It’s a unique thing that brings people together who aren’t usually in the same room, and in the current climate, it’s good to bring people together.”

It’s all wrapped up in the name of the album. “For sixteen years, we’ve slowly been taking the stairs,” says Kev. “It’s a gradual kind of snowball where, now, we have control, we can tour in Alaska; we took the hard way for so many years, now we can look back and see what we’ve learned.

“You’ve got to work hard to get what you want. But you shouldn’t be looking for the easy way, anyway, because the hard way is where the real lessons are.”

39 BIO

The Emerson String Quartet has maintained its stature as one of the world’s premier chamber music ensembles for more than four decades. The quartet has made more than 30 acclaimed recordings, and has been honored with nine Grammys® (including two for Best Classical Album), three Gramophone Awards, the Avery Fisher Prize, and Musical America’s Ensemble of the Year. The Emerson frequently collaborates with some of today’s most esteemed composers to premiere new works, keeping the string quartet art form alive and relevant. They have partnered in performance with stellar soloists including Renée Fleming, Barbara Hannigan, Evgeny Kissin, Emanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman, to name a few.

During the 2018-2019 season the Emerson performed as the quartet in residence at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. for its 40th season, and returned to perform with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. The group’s North American appearances include performances at New York’s Alice Tully Hall, the Library of Congress in Washington DC, Denver, Vancouver, Seattle, Houston, Indianapolis, Detroit, the Yale School of Music and University of Georgia, among others. The quartet also embarked on two European tours, performing in major venues in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. During the summer of 2019, the Emerson performed at Tanglewood, Ravinia, and the Aspen Music Festivals.

Other North American highlights include subsequent performances of Shostakovich and The Black Monk: A Russian Fantasy, the new theatrical production co-created by the acclaimed theater director James Glossman and the Quartet’s violinist, Philip Setzer. The music/theater hybrid, co-commissioned by the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, Princeton University and Tanglewood Music Festival, has been presented at the Ravinia Music Festival, Wolf Trap, and in Seoul, South Korea. The quartet reprised this work at Stony Brook University and the Orange County Performing Arts Center. In a bold intersection of chamber music and theater starring David Strathairn/Len Cariou and Jay O. Sanders/Sean Astin with the Emerson String Quartet, the audiences witness the trials of Dmitri Shostakovich’s 40-year obsessive quest to create an opera based on Anton Chekhov’s mystical tale: The Black Monk.

The Emerson’s extensive recordings range from Bach to Harbison, including the complete string quartets of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Bartók, Webern and Shostakovich, as well as multi-CD sets of the major works of Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Dvořák. The ensemble has also recorded music by Tchaikovsky, Smetana, Debussy, Ravel, Barber and Ives. In April 2017, the Emerson released its latest album, Chaconnes and Fantasias: Music of Britten and Purcell, the first CD issue on the label, Decca Gold. The Quartet has commissioned and performed new works from composers such as Thomas Adés, Kaija Saariaho, Wolfgang Rihm, Mark- Anthony Turnage, and Edgar Meyer.

Formed in 1976 and based in New York City, the Emerson was one of the first quartets whose violinists alternated in the first chair position. The quartet, which took its name from the American poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, balances busy performing careers with a commitment to teaching, and serves as Quartet-in-

40 Residence at Stony Brook University. In 2013, cellist Paul Watkins, a distinguished soloist, award-wining conductor, and devoted chamber musician, joined the original members of the Emerson Quartet. The reconfigured group has been praised by critics and fans alike around the world. In spring 2016, full-time Stony Brook faculty members Philip Setzer and Lawrence Dutton received the honor of Distinguished Professor, and part-time faculty members Eugene Drucker and Paul Watkins were awarded the title of Honorary Distinguished Professor. The Emerson had previously received honorary doctorates from Middlebury College, the College of Wooster, Bard College and the University of Hartford. In January 2015, the Quartet received the Richard J. Bogomolny National Service Award, Chamber Music America’s highest honor, in recognition of its significant and lasting contribution to the chamber music field.

The Emerson Quartet enthusiastically endorses Thomastik strings.

PROGRAM NOTES

JOSEPH HAYDN born Rohrau, Austria, 31 March 1732/died Vienna, 31 May 1809 String Quartet in D Major, Op. 50, No. 6, “The Frog”

The six “Prussian” quartets of Op. 50 were composed in 1787 and dedicated to Frederick William II, the King of Prussia, a fine amateur cellist to whom Mozart and Beethoven also dedicated works. Motivic structure and variety mark the set.

Not of Haydn’s origin, the unfortunate nickname of this quartet stems from its final movement where the violinist uses a technique known as bariolage, best described as repeated notes played on different strings. Some hapless listener likened the effect to a frog’s croaking and thus came the nickname despite the musicality of not only this movement, but the whole quartet.

Although it is considered to be the “lightest” of the set, the first movement of "The Frog” bears a certain intensity while the second movement is frankly emotional, and not without its complexities, particularly in the cello part. The Minuetto is filled with contrasts from the forceful to the tender. The spiritedFinale makes reference to the first movement, and as implied above, established the name of the work.

Program notes by Lucy Miller Murray published by Rowman & Littlefield.

41 ANTONÍN DVOŘÁK born Nelahozeves, Czech Republic, 8 September 1841/died Prague, 1 May 1904

String Quartet in E-flat, Op. 51

The year 1878 was particularly auspicious for Dvořák, both personally and musically. The birth of a daughter in June, following the earlier losses of two children, was truly a blessed event. His career was flourishing as his threeSlavonic Rhapsodies, the first set of Slavonic Dances, and the string sextet scored great artistic successes. Dvořák was also lauded for capturing the directness, warmth, simplicity, and infectious merriment of native Czech folk music, without resorting to overt borrowing of national melodies.

On the basis of his growing fame, Jean Becker of the Florentine Quartet asked Dvořák to write a quartet in the Slavic Style. The result was the very charming and beautiful Op. 51, in which Dvořák integrates elements of Czech national music with his basically Classical approach to composition.

The first movement reflects the serenity and contentment that Dvořák was experiencing at the time. The radiant first theme proceeds calmly; of special interest are the little figures at the ends of each phrase that bring to mind the dance rhythms of the Czech polka. The second theme, slightly more intense than the first, maintains the lightness of mood with the reappearance of the polka rhythm. After a development devoted mostly to the first theme, Dvořák starts the truncated recapitulation with the second theme, reserving the opening theme for the coda.

Dvořák’s Dumka movements are traditionally slow and melancholy in character, with one or more fast, lively contrasting sections. Over strummed harp-like chords in the cello, the first violin, echoed by the viola, sings the sad lament. In time this gives way to the saucy interlude, which resembles the popular Czech folk dance, Furiant. Melodically, it is a fast, rhythmic refashioning of the slow Dumka theme. After a shortened review of the opening section, a coda based on the Furiant subject ends the movement.

Short and intimate, the Romanze is the most songlike and least nationalistic of the four movements. It derives essentially from one theme which Dvořák, most imaginatively and with great ardor, transforms, ornaments, and develops.

The Finale theme, akin to theskacna , a fast, boisterous Bohemian reel dance, is stated initially by the first violin, but is soon taken up by the others. A slightly slower and more serious subsidiary subject in the second violin intrudes on the good time, but its playful aspects are soon brought out as Dvořák speeds up the tempo and later gives it to the first violin and cello, playing a full four octaves apart. The two subjects are developed in more-or-less conventional sonata form, before reaching an exuberant climactic close.

Although dedicated to Jean Becker of the Florentine Quartet, the premiere was given by the Joachim Quartet in Berlin on July 29, 1879.

Program notes by Melvin Berger from Guide to Chamber Music. Published by Anchor/Doubleday.

42 LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN born Bonn, Germany, 17 December 1770/died Vienna 26 March 1827 Quartet in E Minor, Op. 50, No. 2

The Quartet in E minor, Op. 59, No. 2 is the second in the series of three commissioned by Count Rasumovsky in 1806. At the beginning of the Allegro, Beethoven suddenly repeats the terse opening statement a half tone higher, in the Neapolitan key of F, without preparation and after the home key is barely established. This creates an unsettled, tense feeling which permeates the movement. There is much sixteenth- note motion and hardly any real themes, only motivic fragments often punctuated by silence. The second subject, though in major, is hardly relaxed, being propelled by restless accompaniment. In the development, Beethoven moves through thirteen keys, with passing harmonies in between, before arriving at E minor for the recapitulation. The return, coming after a series of fortissimo trills, is somewhat disguised by the filling in of the spaces between the original opening chords. Even the coda, with its brief calm, moves through several keys. A crescendo builds toward the end in a flurry of notes, and the main theme, heard previously only in pianissimo, is played fortissimo in the final bars. Carl Czerny, a close friend of Beethoven’s, wrote, “The Adagio, in E Major, in the second Rasumovsky Quartet, occurred to him while he was contemplating the starry sky and thinking of the music of the spheres.” There exists no proof of this other than the extraordinary quality of the movement itself. The tension in the first movement is transcended here by timeless ecstasy, an otherworldly atmosphere. The opening hymn is soon punctuated by quiet dotted rhythms and the sound of celestial mechanics, if one believes Czerny’s statement. At the end of the second theme this dotted rhythm finally gives way to leisurely triplets, which spin slowly like orbiting planets. After the development, which contains more contrasting material and some very dramatic moments, the recapitulation is slightly extended within itself, contributing to the timelessness even more. The hymn makes an impassioned appearance in new harmonic guise, and the triplets float down through the instruments at the end, leaving the cello murmuring contentedly.

The third movement is in two sections, the first Allegretto, the second a trio titled Maggiore and bearing the obligatory Russian Theme. The melancholy Allegretto is obsessed by a single rhythmic idea, heard in the first measure. The trio is a lively fugue on the Russian tune first heard in the viola against a triplet countersubject. At the climax, the theme is played fortissimo in canon by all four instruments. Beethoven indicates that the Allegretto should be repeated twice and the Maggiore once, perhaps to properly proportion this movement to the others.

The Finale opens with a burst in C Major, only to turn to the home key of E minor in the seventh bar. This unusual harmonic trick starting on the flatted sixth degree and fooling the listener, rekindles a charged atmosphere. Dotted rhythms in both melody and accompaniment create a martial, even relentless, mood. The second subject provides contrast; it is a steady stream of even notes, played legato, and utilizes the Neapolitan harmony so central to the first movement. The coda is long and dramatic, with fortissimo explosions in the Neapolitan key. The main theme is finally heard in fortissimo, as in the end of the first movement, and the work concludes with a dashing Presto.

62 BIO

Acclaimed pianist, composer and humanitarian Keiko Matsui's transcendent and haunting melodies have long sought to build bridges. Her sonic cultural exchange has reached the hearts and minds of fans throughout the world and has allowed the pianist to work alongside icons Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, Hugh Masekela and . “I would like my music to be a conduit for peace, kindness, love and light,” shares the petite, soft-spoken, yet commanding pianist. She adds, “My recording Echo is my attempt to capture all of these elements into the vibration of sound.” Matsui has released her 28th recording as leader, Echo, which she co-produced with Grammy nominated producer Bud Harner. A master storyteller, Matsui crafts exquisite compositions replete with lush harmonies and global rhythms to create timeless musical anthems. Like iconic musicians Miles Davis and Shirley Horn, Keiko is also a master at utilizing space in her music to create a backdrop of drama, tension and sheer beauty. Keiko’s most inspired work yet, Echo features numerous special guests, including bassist Marcus Miller, saxophonist , vocalist Gretchen Parlato, guitarist Robben Ford and bassist (and son of Clint Eastwood) Kyle Eastwood. The all-star lineup also showcases premiere recording musicians: drummer , bassist , guitarist Paul Jackson, Jr. and percussionist Luis Conte, as well as Keiko’s top-notch touring band, Jimmy Branly, JP Mourão and Rico Belled.

“While composing the songs on Echo, I had a feeling of gratitude and a sense that there were infinite possibilities,” reflects Matsui. “This music is close to my heart because it is a celebration of the joy of the imagination, the strength of courage and the endurance of faith. It is about romance and a reminder to honor all living things.” There is a grace and spirituality about Keiko that permeates her music and very essence. Listening to Echo, you feel as if you are transported on a journey as the music unfolds like ten sweeping movements in a rapturous suite. The prolific Matsui composed 100 motifs for the recording that eventually were narrowed down to the songs featured on the CD.

Keiko Matsui took her first piano lesson at five, and she made her U.S. recording debut in 1987 with the recording A Drop of Water. Under Northern Lights followed in 1989, and her subsequent albums of note include No Borders (1990), Night Waltz (1991), Cherry Blossom (1992), Doll (1994), Sapphire (1995) and Dream Walk (1996), which remained on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart for over 15 months and further cemented her reputation as a force to be reckoned with.

In 1997, she launched a tour dedicated to raising awareness of breast cancer and released a four-song CD entitled A Gift of Hope that benefited the Y-Me Breast Cancer Organization. Her music was prominently featured in Say It, Fight It, Cure It, a Lifetime special profiling several courageous women battling breast cancer. “My fans come from all backgrounds, and I have been approached by various foundations to join in their efforts. When I hear of a cause that resonates with me that I can dedicate my music to, then I am always willing. It is my way to show gratitude and give back,” states Keiko. In 1999, the pianist performed at A Golden Moment, a skating concert featuring Olympic figure skaters Kristi Yamaguchi, Tara Lipinski, Ekaterina Gordeeva, and Katarina Witt, which benefited the Susan G. Komen

63 Foundation. 1998 saw the release of her album Full Moon And The Shrine, which was accompanied by the acclaimed PBS-TV special Keiko Matsui: Light Above The Trees. In 2000, the special earned Keiko a National Smooth Jazz Award for Best Long- Form Video Achievement, and she was honored with an award for Best Female Artist. She claimed the award again in 2001. In 2002, she released the poignant recording, The Ring, which was meant to communicate a message of peace, compassion, and humanity to listeners around the world.

Keiko Matsui’s CD Deep Blue (2001) topped Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz charts for three consecutive weeks. She is the first Japanese artist to achieve this honor. In 2003 she enjoyed success with her recording The Piano, which featured reinventions of some of her most loved original works. In 2004 the title track of Keiko’s Wildflower was used to support the United Nations World Food Programme’s efforts in Africa. "I decided I wanted to support the WFP after learning about the tremendous problems in Africa and how humanitarian assistance can change people’s lives for the better," shares the activist.

Keiko has also collaborated with Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches (A3M) in numerous charity concerts. In addition, proceeds from her 2001 mini-CD, A Gift of Life, went to the National Marrow Donor Program and Marrow Foundation in support of A3M.

In December 2009, the highly sought-after pianist was asked to put together a Christmas show at the Blue Note club in Tokyo, which was a major success, and in November 2010 she made her highly anticipated debut at the Blue Note in NY, which was sold out. In 2011 Keiko recorded with fellow pianist – and Michigan native – Bob James on a four-hand piano project called Altair & Vega. Keiko’s depth as a composer has also allowed her to contribute music to soundtracks in Japan, the U.S. and Russia.

Keiko also released her critically heralded Billboard Top 5 recording The Road… which featured Cameroonian bassist Richard Bona and saxophonists Kirk Whalum and Jackiem Joyner among others. In 2013, Keiko Matsui celebrated the release of her critically lauded album Soul Quest, which is the musical inspiration behind Live in Toyko. The same year she was an invited guest to Istanbul for International Jazz Day alongside luminaries Herbie Hancock, Branford Marsalis and Terence Blanchard. 2016 saw the release of Journey To The Heart, which was Keiko’s first acoustic project and debuted at #1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Charts.

Keiko Matsui concludes, “My sole desire is to write songs that create a feeling of oneness. This music is a reflection of my thoughts and life, and right now, I am drawing my road towards happiness and truly learning about what it means to be happy.”

78 ENDOWMENTS

Wharton Center gratefully acknowledges individuals and organizations that have established named endowments to support Wharton Center through cash and/or their estate plans. Endowments provide a foundation of stability and support. These funds differ from others in that the total gift is invested. Each year, a portion of the income earned is spent while the remainder is added to the principal for growth. In this respect, an endowment is a perpetual gift.
