Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Welcome Letter Dear Delegates, We are thrilled to welcome you to Harvard Model Congress Boston 2020 and the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation! Our names are Andrew Kim, Ryan Bayer, Christopher Wang, and Noelle Park, and we will be your staff for this conference. The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation is an exciting standing committee of the United States Senate that specifically deals with issues such as interstate commerce, communications, the Internet, highways, aviation, rail, shipping, transportation security, oceans, fisheries, science, sports, tourism, consumer protection, economic development, technology, competitiveness, product safety, insurance, and standards and measurement. For this conference, we will discuss on the topics of the airline industry, the Dark Web, and the HIV crisis, so please be ready to discuss these topics, make sure you read the briefings thoroughly and research your Senator’s position on each topic. Please feel free at any time to let us know if you have any questions about either of the briefings or about conducting your research. For those of you new to HMC, this can be an intimidating experience. Remember that this is an opportunity for you to learn outside of the classroom, and so do not be afraid to ask questions and to advocate for the beliefs of the senators you will be representing. This conference is far more than just a Congress simulation; this is a chance to hear different perspectives and learn about our legislature and how it enacts change. The skills that you build here can help you change the world tomorrow. As your staffers, we are here to help you learn. A short introduction about each of us: Andrew Kim is a sophomore from Seoul, South Korea, concentrating in Economics. Besides HMC, at Harvard he is involved in the Catholic Student Association, Model UN, and PBHA. This will be his second HMC conference, and he is excited to be chairing Senate CST. Ryan Bayer is a junior from San Diego, CA studying Economics. Outside of HMC, he is a midshipman in Harvard’s Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps and will commission as a Naval officer upon graduation. He is passionate about teaching young people the importance of democracy, civic engagement, and public service. Chris Wang is a freshman from Atlanta, Georgia, who is currently undecided about his concentration. Outside of HMC, he is a Varsity Sailor and a member of the Harvard College Consulting Group. He is ecstatic about being able to help young people establish a strong relationship with politics. Noelle is a freshman from Brooklyn, NY who is currently undecided on her major but is thinking about Government or Psychology. In addition to HMC, she is on the Harvard Women’s Club Soccer Team, the First-Year Social Committee, and works in the Dean of Students Office as an event planner. She is so excited to be working with such a passionate group of students and hopes the conference is as much fun as it is meaningful. Please feel free to reach out before the conference with any questions or concerns you may have. We really do hope you will have an enjoyable and memorable conference experience! Sincerely, Andrew, Ryan, Chris, and Noelle .
