This goes hand in hand with an attempt to cri- tique a political economy that appears to her frozen in time, una- ble to follow the sudden movements industry imposes on society, producing disorders, grey areas and conflicts. This critique is first of all the recognition of the crisis of laissez faire and the attempt to deal with a change of paradigm. We publish here for the first time two original essays dating from the beginning of Potter’s career that in some ways provide the basis of her subsequent reflections, because they take position inside a debate dealing not only with classical economic theory, but also with the social transformations that demanded its reas- sessment. The importance of these writings is twofold: on the one hand they are key to understanding Potter’s political thought, be- cause they show the theoretical and political movement from the centrality of the individual to the centrality of society, that is also a movement from Herbert Spencer, her mentor and friend, to Alfred Marshall and finally to socialism, as a political and administrative, rather than simply economic, project. On the other hand, rather than merely capturing the contradictions of her time, these writ- ings anticipate the crucial questions of the century to come, and that will be at the core of the Fabian reformism to which she commits herself after 1892. The first manuscript on the history of English economy, finished in 1885, and the second on the Marxian theory of value, written between 1886 and 1887, attempt to draw attention to a historical turning point. The core of this analysis is not yet Potter’ socialism, as a doctrine aiming at the rearrange- ment of industrial disorder, but the redefinition of political terms, including the individual, society and the State. This redefinition 7 depends first of all on the development of a new conception of the relation between production and consumption, crucial for the de- bate among marginalists and for the political reconsideration both of the individual and of social cooperation. However these essays are also a necessary premise to the politi- cal discourse Potter will frame in the years to come – and here lies their greatest importance: the administration of democracy and collectivism as the political theory of administration. Her critique of economy as a science of material wealth, the uncontested realm of the economic individual, and the refusal of the Marxian theory of value show the peculiarity of the social scientist’s thought, which, while seeing the limits of liberal discourse, tries to develop a new connection between individual and society, to think a new community open to dynamic movement rather than confined within limits, starting from the ethical re-foundation of labour and the reconsideration of the role of the State. Potter moves in an historical, intellectual and scientific milieu crossed by uncertainties and tensions reflecting the political and social transformations her epoch is approaching. Progressively shaping her vision of industrial society, with these essays Potter emerges as an innovator of the critique of liberalism, simultane- ously addressing in an original manner the reformistic and social- ist reflections she will soon come into contact with through the Fabian Society. The critique of liberalism and the place Potter occupies in the European reformist and socialist debate can be understood solely inside the frame of the crisis of laissez-faire as a doctrine for gov- erning society. 1. Crisis and Critique of Laissez faire The apparent quiet of the Victorian period is crossed by social turbulences and theoretical reappraisals. These turbulences are firstly the product of poverty and inequality, but also of the re- search of new political expressions able to overcome the, by that time, obsolete forms of Chartism and the insufficiency of the Radi- cal movement and, thus, to give substance to the so-called “social- ist revival” which was at that time still quite undefined. During the 1870s trade union membership increased, also among the peasantry. Even that impenetrable mass called the «re- 8 siduum», composed of dockers, gasmen and bricklayers, organized into new unions, creating a different style of struggle to those in the factory. On the one side a revolutionary syndicalism emerges, seeing in workers’ control a possible unique form of democracy, on the other side, trade unions, co-operatives and factory legislation operate inside a political framework that aims at the institutionali- zation of social change and marks the advent of a socialism that considers the institutional level to be an essential ground of strug- gle1. This is also the instrument with which Potter will try to coun- ter what she considers the fundamental defect of political econo- my, i.e. abstraction and ahistoricity. The first outcome of the crisis of laissez faire therefore brings about a socialism never seen be- fore, characterized by the search for a new ethics for society in re- action to the violence of free trade and to the growing misery of East London, the symbolic place of industrial poverty. This new socialism is also a reaction to the disappointment produced by the promise that progress would bring the growing and inexorable expansion of the welfare to all social classes. At the same time, this resurgence was influenced by the spread of reli- gious doubt – brought about by the establishment of positivism and the scientific authority of biology – and of the undisputed prestige of natural science. Applying science to social life meant, in those uncertain days, that progress could be controlled and man- aged, allowing human beings to imagine and then concretely plan a new world. For socialism, as for liberalism, the issue was to reconsider con- crete goals and ideals starting from economic, political and social changes introduced by the definite advent of industry. Industry was indeed the new name of a future society yet to be understood and defined: it was the idea of a society that was unavoidably 1 D. The young Marx critiques the hierarchical idealism/materialism oppo- sition, in which idealism abstracts from and reduces all material elements to the mind (or spirit), and materialism abstracts from and reduces all mental abstractions to the body (or matter). The mature Marx sophisticates this critique in his theory of the commodity fetish, in which exchange-value (the mind) abstracts from the use-value (the body) of the commodity. Although Marx aims to challenge capitalism by abolishing the hierarchical relation among binary oppositions, I show that in his early as well as his later writings on the working-class woman he reinforces hierarchical binaries, which points at the gendered unconscious structure of capitalism. Dienstag, Chair How has wonder, an emotion tied to religion and philosophy in premodern European political thought, been used in the context of a modern, supposedly disenchanted politics? The past few decades have seen a dramatic reassessment of the importance of the emotions in the history of political thought. However, this broad reassessment has yet to address how canonical political thinkers conceptualized and deployed wonder in their theories of politics. I argue that we find in the writings of Thomas Hobbes, Immanuel Kant, Karl Marx, and Hannah Arendt a subterranean debate on the proper conceptualization and political use of wonder in modernity. When Western political thought departed from a vision of the world as pre-structured by a divine, admirable order, there was no longer a readily available interpretation of the meaning of the potentially disruptive experience of wonder. Competing individuals and groups could make claims for wonder to be directed towards emerging aspects of political life as the foundation of political order. By using wonder to channel disruptive feelings of novelty into the cognition of order, these claims could structure the realm of possible actions.

Among the first women to link the themes of feminism and socialism, she takes part in the workers’ battles and fights for women’s rights and the abolition of child labor. In 1883 she meets Edward Aveling and her life is crushed by their passionate but tragic love story. ELEANOR MARX Born in 1855 in London, Eleanor Marx was interested in politics since she was a child. She dedicated her life to the battles for workers and women’s rights while handling the publication of her father’s posthumous works. She translated works of literature and theatre (she was the first to translate into English Flaubert’s Madame Bovary and Ibsen’s plays, which she also played in as an actress). Incredibly strong in her political convictions and extremely fragile in feelings and emotions, she was defeated by her harmful relationship with Edward Aveling, convinced socialist, playwright and actor. Eleanor’s life outlines many contradictions of modern womanhood and the complexity of women’s emancipation process. Along with her comrades, Eleanor was among the first to underline the urgency of certain issues: from female subjugation within the family, both bourgeois and working class, to the cruelty of child labour. She died in 1898.     ithout a doubt Karl Marx’ philosophical work had a fundamental impact on “western” concepts of society and economics that still reverberates in Wthe philosophical discourse on Marx. When it comes to analyzing this ongoing discourse it should be noted that due to language barriers the work of Chine- se scholars is underrepresented in this discourse. This book is a translation of Zhang Yibing’s reference work «Back to Marx» fi rst published in 1999 in the PRC. The book is a serious inquiry into the complex interrelationships between Marx‘s political and economic philosophy, based on a very careful and systematic rea- ding of a wide range of textual sources, including—in particular—the newly Zhang Yibing published second edition of the Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe (MEGA2), which collects a large amount of notes, drafts, manuscripts, and excerpts previous- ly unavailable to the scholarly community. The analyses themselves are closely Back to Marx reasoned, subtle, and circumspect.     Opium as Dialectics of Religion: Metaphor, Expression and Protest Andrew M. McKinnon, University of Aberdeen Published in Critical Sociology (2005) vol 31, no. 1/2, pp. 15-38. This is the premise of a Marxian analysis of religion: “Religion…is the opium of the people”. But what does it mean to equate religion with opium? For most twenty-first century readers, opium means something quite simple and obvious, and the comparison between the two terms seems perfectly literal. Opium is a drug that kills pain, distorts reality, and an artificial source of solace to which some poor souls can become addicted; so also religion. Friedrich Nietzsche argues that the ‘true’ or literal meaning of a word is one “to which one has become accustomed due to frequent use… a metaphor…whose metaphorical nature has been forgotten” (1995:72). Through the “interminable repetition” of the phrase in Marxian analyses of religion (O’Toole 1984:68), “opium of the people” has lost its metaphorical sense. Even when readers of “Towards a Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Right: Introduction” encounter the text as a dialectical analysis of religion, their understanding is governed– and loses its dialectical force– by a literal and presentist reading of this central metaphor. In what is quite possibly the greatest work of Marxist literary theory, Frederic Jameson argues that ...texts come before us as the always-already-read; we apprehend [them] through sedimented layers of previous interpretations, or—if the text is brand-new— 1 through the sedimented reading habits and categories developed by those inherited interpretive traditions (Jameson 1981:9).

Il film è stato presentato in concorso alla 77esima edizione della Biennale di Venezia dello scorso anno. Miss Marx parla di Eleanor Marx (1855 – 1898), una delle figlie del filosofo ed economista politico Karl Marx (1818 – 1883). Nel film Eleanor, chiamata Tussy in famiglia, raccoglie l’eredità ideologica e politica del padre, ossia un pensiero di lotta per l’emancipazione umana e l’uguaglianza sociale. Ecco un breve dialogo tratto dal film fra Eleanor e suo padre Karl: Eleanor: La tua idea di felicità? Karl: La lotta. Eleanor: Come i lavoratori sono vittime della tirannia degli inoperosi, le donne sono vittime della tirannia degli uomini. Il film Miss Marx racconta la vita, il pensiero e la psicologia della protagonista. Vediamo Eleanor in prima linea, coraggiosa e combattiva, per le difesa dei diritti dei lavoratori, per l’abolizione del lavoro minorile, per le pari opportunità e il suffragio universale. Pierre-Joseph Proudhon Il cinema è uno dei mezzi di domesticazione sociale più attuali… è consumato in ogni angolo della Terra e attraverso le televisioni anche la sua archeologia-mitologia viene usata per la generalizzazione della stupidità!… i padroni della Rete (fabbriche, banche, bombe, giocatto- li, smartphone, squadre di calcio, partiti, terrorismi pilotati dai servizi segreti dei governi…) sono anche i produttori di linguaggi che pianificano desideri e necessità della società consu- merista… i maestri-cantori della ricchezza di pochi sulla povertà di molti non si fanno scrupo- li… l’ordine, la pace, la democrazia, i regimi totalitari… sono dettati dai mercati… per i dissi- 1 denti ci sono galere e campi di concentramento… la polizia sa sempre contro chi sparare! Il Debito pubblico, la Banca mondiale, le guerre, i mercati… segnano il termometro della Borsa e ogni volta che salgono i dividendi, c’è un po’ più dolore nel mondo! Il cinema italiano è divenuto una cosetta provinciale… la tecnologia digitale ha reso tutti regi- sti, fotografi, pittori, scultori, musicisti e tutto finisce nei siparietti dell’arte, moda, serie-tv, e anche gli operai scrivono libri (un tanto al chilo) sui benefici del marxismo sulla pelle e della caduta del comunismo autoritario sull’avanzare delle patatine fritte! L’estetizzazione della politica ha soffocato la politicizzazione dell’arte ma non ce n’era proprio bisogno!… l’arte, a qualsiasi bordello appartenga, ha sempre avuto l’imprimatur dei padroni che l’hanno glorifi- cata a colpi di dollari e deposta nei caveau delle banche a beneficio di pochi… le riproduzioni comunque sono dispensate in pasto ai popoli, insieme ai fucili e all’aspersorio.
