The young Marx critiques the hierarchical idealism/materialism oppo- sition, in which idealism abstracts from and reduces all material elements to the mind (or spirit), and materialism abstracts from and reduces all mental abstractions to the body (or matter). The mature Marx sophisticates this critique in his theory of the commodity fetish, in which exchange-value (the mind) abstracts from the use-value (the body) of the commodity. Although Marx aims to challenge capitalism by abolishing the hierarchical relation among binary oppositions, I show that in his early as well as his later writings on the working-class woman he reinforces hierarchical binaries, which points at the gendered unconscious structure of capitalism. Dialectics and Deconstruction in Political Economy
Review Sean Saraka "In Praise of Dialectics" by Rene Magritte Robert Albritton, Dialectics and Deconstruction in Political Economy. New York: Palgrave, 2001. Softcover. 203 pages. In Dialectics and Deconstruction in Political Economy, Robert Albritton stages a series of encounters with contemporary and classical thinkers. Hegel, Weber, Adorno, Althusser, Derrida, Postone and Gibson-Graham are all evaluated vis-à-vis the Uno- Sekine method of political economy that Albritton champions, and which is outlined in the book's introductory chapters. Albritton asserts the superiority of the Uno-Sekine method in each case, and this allows him both to highlight the finer points of this approach to political economy, and to speculate on its implications for social theory as a whole. In so doing, Albritton seeks not only to advertise the advantages of the Uno- Sekine method, but also to argue for a reformation of political economy along these lines, which would address the epistemological liabilities that have "driven poststructuralists to distraction" and delimit "the latitude for disagreement" amongst practitioners (Albritton 2001, 6, 9). In what follows, I intend to examine Albritton's presentation of the Uno-Sekine method, and to place it in the context of the present controversy over historical and systematic dialectics. -

Open Cultural Studies 2018; 2: 236–248 Research Article Claudia Leeb* Mystified Consciousness: Rethinking the Rise of the Far Right with Marx and Lacan https://doi.org/10.1515/culture-2018-0022 Received March 31, 2018; accepted September 2, 2018 Abstract: This paper brings core concepts coined by Karl Marx in conversation with Jacques Lacan to analyse some of the mechanisms that have mystified subjects’ consciousness, and contributed to a scenario where the (white) working-classes in the United States and elsewhere turned to the far right that further undermines their existence, instead of uniting with the raced and gendered working class to overthrow capitalism. It explains that the money fetish, which we find at the centre of the American Dream of wholeness (on earth), serves as the unconscious fantasy object petit a to deal with the desires and fears subjects fundamental non-wholeness creates, which have been heightened by the insecurities of neoliberal capitalism and exploited by the far right. It also shows how religion offers the illusion of wholeness in the sky, which produces subjects who endure rather than rebel against their suffering. Finally, it explains how the far-right brands the sexed and raced working-classes as inferior to uphold the illusion of the white working-class subjects as whole, which further undermines the creation of a revolutionary proletariat. Cosmos and History: The Journal of Natural and Social Philosophy, vol. 15, no. 1, 2019 BEFORE HEGEL: SCHILLER, NOVALIS, AND THE CONCEPT OF AUFHEBUNG Hammam Aldouri ABSTRACT: Philosophical explorations of the concept of Aufhebung (sublation, supersession) immediately prior to its formulation in Hegel’s work have remained relatively absent within the context of both Hegel scholarship and German Idealism studies. Hegel is often simply represented as the originator of the concept and the latter is understood almost exclusively within his oeuvre. This essay addresses this lack by offering an exposition of the notion as it unfolds in two works from 1795-1796: Friedrich Schiller’s Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man and Novalis’ Fichte Studies. In these works, we find distinctive examinations of Aufhebung understood as the name of a process in which a subject comprehends itself in relation to its own processual development. My guiding premise is that without an adequate comprehension of the way in which Aufhebung is constructed and comprehended in the last years of the eighteenth century, we cannot establish the vantage point from which to reconstruct Hegel’s early conception of the notion, a conception which begins to emerge in his earliest Frankfurt writings in 1797, as a contribution to the constellation of post-Kantian conceptions. Using tools and mapping methods from Graphika, a social media intelligence firm, we study more than 10 million tweets from 700,000 Twitter accounts that linked to more than 600 fake and conspiracy news outlets. Crucially, we study fake and con- spiracy news both before and after the election, allowing us to measure how the fake news ecosystem has evolved since November 2016. Much fake news and disinformation is still being spread on Twitter. Consistent with other research, we find more than 6.6 million tweets linking to fake and conspiracy news publishers in the month before the 2016 election. Yet disinformation continues to be a substantial problem postelection, with 4.0 million tweets linking to fake and conspiracy news publishers found in a 30-day period from mid-March to mid-April 2017. Contrary to claims that fake news is a game of “whack-a-mole,” more than 80 percent of the disinformation accounts in our election maps are still active as this report goes to press. -

Opiate of the Masses? Social Inequality, Religion, and Politics
OPIATE OF THE MASSES? SOCIAL INEQUALITY, RELIGION, AND POLITICS Landon Schnabel* Indiana University, Bloomington Abstract: This study considers the assertion that religion is the opiate of the masses. Using a special module of the General Social Survey and drawing on structuration and positionality theories, I first demonstrate that religion functions as a compensatory resource for disadvantaged groups— women, racial minorities, those with lower incomes, and, to a lesser extent, sexual minorities. I then demonstrate that religion—operating as both palliative resource and values-shaping schema—suppresses what would otherwise be larger group differences in political values. This study provides empirical support for Marx’s general claim that religion is the “sigh of the oppressed creature” and suppressor of emancipatory politics. It expands upon and refines the economics-focused argument, however, showing that religion provides (1) compensatory resources for lack of social, and not just economic, status, and (2) traditional-values-oriented schemas that impact social attitudes more than economic attitudes. I conclude that religion is not a simple distraction, but instead a complex and powerful social structure in which people both receive psychological compensation and develop rules-based belief systems that shape their political values. OSBORN with an introduction by JOHN STRACHEY LONDON VICTOR GOLLANCZ LTD 1937 To DORIS AND PHILIP INTRODUCTION A comparative study of the doctrines of Marx and Freud has often been demanded by free-lance critics of Marxism. These critics have never shown any inclination to undertake the work, however, nor is this to be regretted, for the only qualification for the task which most of them have possessed has been a nicely balanced ignorance of both disciplines. In the meanwhile Marxists have tended to dismiss psycho-analytic theory as unworthy of attention. It may be doubted, however, if the founders of Marxism would have adopted this attitude. Friedrich Engels in particular made it his business to pass in review every major scientific development which occurred during his lifetime. It may be that if he could have lived another twenty years he would not have omitted to consider the works of Freud This is not to suggest that Engels would have accepted Freudian theory in its entirety. On the contrary, we can imagine the caustic and ironic sentences with which that greatest of all polemists would have pointed out its one-sided character. But I cannot help believing that Engels would no more have neglected Freud’s discoveries in the field of psychology than he neglected the discoveries of Darwin or of Morgan in the fields of biology or anthropology. That old eagle would have swooped upon this new material also, and would have digested it, criticised it, sifted it. Nor, I am convinced, would Engels have failed to find in Freud’s work data which he would have hailed as of the utmost importance for the development of Marxism. -

l ALIENATION AND DIALECTICAL LOGIC Harry K. Wells This paper discusses the principles of dialectical logic as developed in the works of Hegel and Marx. The author demonstrates how cla.ssical logic (or formal logic) is primarily a logic of classification and how dialectical logic was developed for the analysis of process or change. The laws of classificatory logic are preserved in dialectical logic by formulation of three levels of a dialectical syllogism: the first is concerned with the three stages of development, beginning, middle and end, in terms of quan titative and qualitative changes; the second is concerned with the interconnections of content and form as a quality, thing or thought moves from its beginning through its middle to its end; and the third is concerned with the negation of the negation of the laws of formal logic. The dialectical syllogism is applied to the problem of human history and the development of human society by tracing the development of alienation in the evolution of the structure of society. History is divided into three main stages: 1) The Age of Gathering, which is characterized by non-antagonistic contradictions; 2) The Age of Production, which is characterized by the heightening of antagonistic contradiction (the age of anxiety and alienation); and 3) The Age of creativity which is a new stage characterized by non-antagonistic contradictions. In Western Europe and North America it has become fashionable to characterize the 20th century by the descriptive term "alienation." By "alienation" is meant the estrangement of man from nature, from fellow men, from society, from ethical and esthetic values, from reason, from, that is, the entire range of human rela tionships and capacities that constitute human nature. -

The Specter of Nihilism: On Hegel on Buddhism ∗ Mario D’Amato and Robert T. Moore Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770-1831) is renowned as one of the most complex and comprehensive modern philosophers. The goal of his philosophical system is nothing less than to explain the interrelationships among all the multifarious aspects of the whole of reality, including the entire array of historical religions. But Hegel’s dialectical method has been criticized as being speculative and idealistic, and his interpretation of religion has been written off by some as an overly ambitious attempt to force the historical religions into the confines of a predetermined hierarchical scheme. As for his perspective on Buddhism, Hegel interprets it as a form of nihilism, stating that for Buddhism, “the ultimate or highest [reality] is…nothing or not- being” and the “state of negation is the highest state: one must immerse oneself in this nothing, in the eternal tranquillity of the nothing generally” (LPR 253).1 Hegel’s interpretation of Buddhism has of course been appropriately criticized in recent scholarship, most ably by Roger-Pol Droit in his work The Cult of Nothingness: The Philosophers and the Buddha (2003). -

It explores the definition of polyamory and how it relates to the Burner counter-culture. This thesis explores what polyamory’s effects are on the individual and community levels for those who participate in it. The findings concluded that overall the participants reported a perceived positive impact on both the individual level and on community cohesion in this case.
