Each of these is cri ticized wi th respect te the faul ty conception of control i t implies. The author concludes wi th a view of technology as a social practice in order to move beyond mastery or enslavement. RESUME L'auteure remet en question la validité de l'un des prinGipaux débats au sein de la philosophie de technologie: celui qui dresse les optimistes contre les pessimistes. Elle soutient que le conflit fondamental est plutôt celui qui oppose les partisans du thème de la maîtrise de la technologie aux partisans du thème de l'asservissement à la technologie. Aucun de ces thèmes n'offre de moyen efficace par lequel la société pourrait contrôler la technologie, en admettant que cela soit possible. Dialectics and Deconstruction in Political Economy
Review Sean Saraka "In Praise of Dialectics" by Rene Magritte Robert Albritton, Dialectics and Deconstruction in Political Economy. New York: Palgrave, 2001. Softcover. 203 pages. In Dialectics and Deconstruction in Political Economy, Robert Albritton stages a series of encounters with contemporary and classical thinkers. Hegel, Weber, Adorno, Althusser, Derrida, Postone and Gibson-Graham are all evaluated vis-à-vis the Uno- Sekine method of political economy that Albritton champions, and which is outlined in the book's introductory chapters. Albritton asserts the superiority of the Uno-Sekine method in each case, and this allows him both to highlight the finer points of this approach to political economy, and to speculate on its implications for social theory as a whole. In so doing, Albritton seeks not only to advertise the advantages of the Uno- Sekine method, but also to argue for a reformation of political economy along these lines, which would address the epistemological liabilities that have "driven poststructuralists to distraction" and delimit "the latitude for disagreement" amongst practitioners (Albritton 2001, 6, 9). In what follows, I intend to examine Albritton's presentation of the Uno-Sekine method, and to place it in the context of the present controversy over historical and systematic dialectics. -

Babe and Edward Comor Cultural Studies and Political Economy Column Poster Meets Innis: Poststructuralism and the Possibility of Political Economy This is the fifth and final column in the Topia series exploring intersections between political economy and cultural studies. The column inTopia 15 (Babe 2006: 91-101) documents the tendency on the part of mainstream American communication/me- dia scholars—from John Dewey in the first decades of the 20th century to postmod- ernist writers of today—to obscure to the vanishing point concerns and methods of political economy. The earlier column suggests that “readers should scrutinize carefully the writings of contemporary poststructuralist/postmodernist authoritative figures to determine just where they stand on issues of political economy” (98). That is precisely what we do here: we focus on the American poststructuralist Mark Poster and compare his writings to the media analysis of Canadian political economist Harold Innis. About seven years ago, a doctoral student in England suggested to one of us that an interest in Innis would make an interest in Poster something of a “natural fit,” as their theories are, from the student’s perspective, so similar. -

The Cambridge School Richard Bourke 1. What are the origins of the Cambridge School? The existence of a “Cambridge School” was first identified by J. G. A. Pocock in the early 1970s, but the description was intended to refer to an approach to the history of ideas that began to achieve prominence in the 1960s. The practitioners whom Pocock had in mind as exemplary members of this School included himself, Quentin Skinner and John Dunn. Over time, it became clear that these three figures had distinct concerns in the fields of intellectual history and political theory. Pocock himself has tended to focus his research on the history of historiography, Skinner on the history of philosophy, and Dunn on political theory understood as a branch of historical inquiry. However, in the 1960s they shared much common ground. By the end of the decade, they had all contributed to methodological debates in the history of ideas. At the same time, each of them had made significant contributions to the study of the history of political thought itself: Pocock, the eldest of the three, had produced a major account of the ideology of ancient constitutionalism in seventeenth-century English political debate; Dunn had produced his classic treatment of the political thought of John Locke; and Skinner had published original studies of the political philosophy of Thomas Hobbes. What distinguished these works was their use of properly historical forms of investigation to explore the writings of past thinkers. This meant eschewing a range of historical fallacies: most importantly, anachronism, prolepsis, and teleology. It also entailed treating ideas as arguments rather than as disembodied entities. -

CEU eTD Collection i Abstract This work charts the contemporary history of the socialist press in Britain, investigating its coverage of world events in the aftermath of the fall of state socialism. In order to do this, two case studies are considered: firstly, the seventy-eight day NATO bombing campaign over the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1999, and secondly, the overthrow of Slobodan Milošević in October of 2000. The British socialist press analysis is focused on the Morning Star, the only English-language socialist daily newspaper in the world, and the multiple publications affiliated to minor British socialist parties such as the Socialist Workers’ Party and the Communist Party of Great Britain (Provisional Central Committee). The thesis outlines a broad history of the British socialist movement and its media, before moving on to consider the case studies in detail. -

FREUD AND MARX A DIALECTICAL STUDY by R. OSBORN with an introduction by JOHN STRACHEY LONDON VICTOR GOLLANCZ LTD 1937 To DORIS AND PHILIP INTRODUCTION A comparative study of the doctrines of Marx and Freud has often been demanded by free-lance critics of Marxism. These critics have never shown any inclination to undertake the work, however, nor is this to be regretted, for the only qualification for the task which most of them have possessed has been a nicely balanced ignorance of both disciplines. In the meanwhile Marxists have tended to dismiss psycho-analytic theory as unworthy of attention. It may be doubted, however, if the founders of Marxism would have adopted this attitude. Friedrich Engels in particular made it his business to pass in review every major scientific development which occurred during his lifetime. It may be that if he could have lived another twenty years he would not have omitted to consider the works of Freud This is not to suggest that Engels would have accepted Freudian theory in its entirety. On the contrary, we can imagine the caustic and ironic sentences with which that greatest of all polemists would have pointed out its one-sided character. But I cannot help believing that Engels would no more have neglected Freud’s discoveries in the field of psychology than he neglected the discoveries of Darwin or of Morgan in the fields of biology or anthropology. That old eagle would have swooped upon this new material also, and would have digested it, criticised it, sifted it. Nor, I am convinced, would Engels have failed to find in Freud’s work data which he would have hailed as of the utmost importance for the development of Marxism.
