Report production: July 2009 Consultation: August 2009 SUMMARY Ponds are an important freshwater habitat that has been shown to play a key role in maintaining biodiversity at landscape level. However, ponds are also vulnerable to environmental degradation and there is evidence that, at a national level, pond quality is declining. In 2007, the biodiversity importance of ponds was recognised when high quality ponds (Priority Ponds) were added to the list of UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Priority Habitats. -

Price1 and Daniel K. Young1 ABSTRACT The first comprehensive survey of Wisconsin Endomychidae was initiated in 1998. Throughout Wisconsin sampling sites were selected based on habitat type and sampling history. Wisconsin endomychids were hand collected from fungi and under tree bark; successful trapping methods included cantharidin- baited pitfall traps, flight intercept traps, and Lindgren funnel traps. Examina- tion of literature records, museum and private collections, and field research yielded 10 species, three of which are new state records. Two dubious records, Epipocus unicolor Horn and Stenotarsus hispidus (Herbst), could not be con- firmed. -

Review�������������������������������������� of the Palaearctic and Oriental species of the subgenus Haliplus s.str. (Coleoptera: Haliplidae: Haliplus) with descriptions of three new species. – Tijdschrift voor Entomologie 149: 227-273, figs. 1-231. [issn 0040-7496]. Published 1 December 2006. The species considered to belong to the subgenus Haliplus Latreille, 1802 and known to occur in the Palaearctic region are reviewed. Latreille’s selection of Dytiscus impressus Fabricius, 1787 as [misidentified] type species, is amended in the sense of the nominal species and not the misidentified identity, following iczn article 70.3.1. Dytiscus impressus is here formally selected as type species for Cnemidotus Illiger, 1802 and Hoplitus Clairville, 1806. Three new species are described: Haliplus (Haliplus) fuscicornis Holmen, Van Vondel & Petrov sp.n., H. kirgisiensis Holmen & Van Vondel sp.n. and H. turkmenicus Van Vondel sp.n.. Lectotypes are designated for H. ruficollis var. pedemontanus Fiori, H. lineolatus Mannerheim, H. brevis Wehncke, H. fluviatilis var. maculatus Seidlitz and H. minutus Takizawa. Three new synonymies are estab- lished: H. brevior Nakane, junior synonym of H. japonicus Sharp, H. fluviatilis var. maculatus Seidlitz, junior synonym of H. ruficollis (De Geer) and H. minutus Takizawa, junior synonym of H. simplex Clark. All species are described and figured. A key to the species is presented. -

Abstract: A three-year survey of Wisconsin Mordellidae (Coleoptera) encompassing a compilation of data from literature records and local collections as well as field work including trapping, hand-collecting, and rearing yielded 68 species comprising 14 genera in three tribes. Sixty-three species (92% of Wisconsin fauna) represent new state species records, not previously recorded from the state in the literature. Plant-associations and state- specific temporal and spatial distribution data for larvae and adults are noted as available. Distributional records suggest 16 additional species and one additional genus are likely to occur in Wisconsin. -

A survey of Wisconsin Scarabaeoidea (Coleoptera) conducted from literature searches, collection inventories, and three years of field work (1997-1999), yielded 177 species representing nine families, two of which, Ochodaeidae and Ceratocanthidae, represent new state family records. Fifty-six species (32% of the Wisconsin fauna) represent new state species records, having not previously been recorded from the state. Literature and collection distributional records suggest the potential for at least 33 additional species to occur in Wisconsin. ITO contribbtes to, and draws upon, the collective knowledge of the 14 sister institutes which make up the Natural Environment Research Council, spanning all the environmental sciences. The Institute studies the factors determining the structure, composition and processes of land and freshwater systems, and of individual plant and animal species. It is developing a sounder scientific basis for predicting and modelling environmental trends arising from natural or man-made change. The results of this research are available to those responsible for the protection, management and wise use of our natural resources. One quarter of ITE's work is research commissioned by customers, such as the Department of Environment, the European Economic Community, the Nature Conservancy Council and the Overseas Development Administration.
