Preface ommercial aviation recently celebrated its first centennial. Over the more than 100 years since the first Ctake off, aviation has witnessed challenges and changes that have made it a critical component of mod- ern societies. Most importantly, air transport brings humans closer together, promoting peace and harmo- ny through connectivity and social exchange. A key role for Hermes Air Transport Organisation is to contribute to the development, progress and promo- tion of air transport at the global level. This would not be possible without knowing the history and evolu- tion of the industry. Once a luxury service, affordable to only a few, aviation has evolved to become accessible to billions of peo- ple. But how did this evolution occur? This book provides an updated timeline of the key moments of air transport. It is based on the first aviation history book Hermes published in 2014 in partnership with ICAO, ACI, CANSO & IATA. I would like to express my appreciation to Professor Martin Dresner, Chair of the Hermes Report Committee, for his important role in editing the contents of the book. 222 Scientia Militaria vol 40, no 3, 2012, pp.222-249. doi: 10.5787/40-3-1043 The South African Air Force, 1920–2012: A Review of its History and an Indication of its Cultural Heritage André Wessels • Abstract Although a South African Aviation Corps existed for a few months in 1915, and although several South Africans saw action in World War I as members of Britain’s Royal Flying Corps, the history of the South African Air Force (SAAF) – the world’s second oldest air force – strictly speaking only dates back to 1 February 1920. In this article, a review is provided of the history of the SAAF, with specific reference to its operational deployments in the 1920s; the difficult years of the great depression and its aftermath and impact on the SAAF; the very important role played by the SAAF in the course of World War II (for example in patrolling South Africa’s coastal waters, and in taking part in the campaigns in East Africa and Abyssinia, as well as in North Africa, Madagascar, Italy, over the Mediterranean and in the Balkans); the post-war rationalisation; its small but important role in the Korean War; the acquisition of a large number of modern aircraft and helicopters from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s; the impact that sanctions had on the SAAF; the SAAF’s role in Northern Namibia and in Angola • Department of History, University of the Free State. On the one hand there were floods severely affecting much of Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia and then there were tales of record temperatures across other parts of this vast country. Queensland grabbed most of the headlines with tales of a massive flood drowning an area larger than France and Germany a scenario that broke new records in suffering across a state that is 668,207 sq mi (1,730,648 sq km) supporting a population of nearly 4.3 million. In the town of Carnarvon, Western Australia they reported the worst flooding in 50 years. In each of the states the ability of air support to counter such major disasters is negligible – too few resources for the areas covered. -

Hopefully 2020 will bring each of us all emergency services aviation that we can be proud of. The people have spoken and it appears assured that one of the most embarrassing period of Brit- ish politics has come out into clear air. Brexit is to happen despite the worst efforts of many self serving politicians who believed they alone knew what the people should be thinking and voting. They were wrong and many are now seeking new pastimes in keeping with their narrow view on life. I suspect that 2020 will bring us another group of displaced ‘leaders of men’ in Yorkshire. The clock is ticking and the resolution of that Inspectorate [HMICFRS] report is beckoning. The new political situation in Britain means that I have less reason to refer to the “Peoples Republic of Wakefield” for this former left wing stronghold has turned to supporting Boris in the National vot- ing process. While it is doubtful that local politics will follow the seed change, the Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) are elected every four years, the last election was in May 2016 and the next election will be on May 7, 2020. Time enough for the present incumbent to feel the heat. On the world front many will recognise that Brexit put the all knowing liberal elite in their place without riot or bloodshed but other potentially more volatile nations face similar challenges. -

But times have changed as the apparently thriving fleet of a handful of AS365N helicopters has either crashed or been sold off since the late 1990s. Four years ago a major ‘Reorganisation And Modernisation’ of the national police force was reported to have led to the establishment of a so called ‘Helicopter Brigade’ to boost police intervention capacity. But no hard news ever emerged of what the equipment amounted to. In some ways the apparent lack of resources in the region have now been underlined by the announcement that Canadian company VIH Helicopters Ltd. has won a six-month, multi- million-dollar contract to help Angola hold its first national elections in 16 years. The deal is just part of a wider 30-aircraft contract the Angolan Government has with another company. -
