By Rachel Ivie AIP Publication Number R-430 June, 2000 Katie Stowe Women in Physics, 2000 Highlights • An increasingly large number of girls have some exposure to physics by taking it in high school. By 1997, almost one-half of high school physics students were girls (Figure 1) . About 400,000 girls take high school physics each year. • Women’s participation in physics decreases with each step up the academic ladder. For example, more than two-fifths of high school physics students in 1993 were girls, but women earned less than one-fifth of bachelor’s degrees in physics five years later (Figures 1 and 3) . • Although women now earn more than one half of all bachelor’s degrees in the U.S., physics is not attracting women as quickly as other fields, including life sciences, chemistry, and engineering (Figures 4 and 5) . Compared to other fields, women are sorely underrepresented in physics at both the bachelor’s and PhD levels (Figures 4, 5, 6, 7, and Table 1) . • Twenty U.S. physics departments (excluding women’s colleges) had more than 40% female bachelor’s degree recipients during the five academic years 1994-98. This report lists these departments as well as women’s colleges that grant bachelor’s degrees in physics (Tables 2 and 3) . • The proportion of women teaching physics decreases as academic rank and level of the department increases (Table 4) . However, the percentage of women faculty members at each rank is at least as high as the percentage of women earning PhDs at various points in the past. -

The aim of this book is to illustrate, graphically, that it is perfectly possible to combine a successful and fulfilling career in research science with motherhood, and that there are no rules about how to do this. On each page you will find a timeline showing on one side, the career path of a research group leader in academic science, and on the other side, important events in her family life. Each contributor has also provided a brief text about their research and about how they have combined their career and family commitments. More than ever before in history, girls are studying and excelling in science and mathematics. Yet the dramatic increase in girls’ educational achieve- ments in scientific and mathematical subjects has not been matched by similar increases in the representation of women working as engineers and computing professionals. Women made up just 26 percent of computing professionals in 2013, a substantially smaller portion than 25 years ago and about the same percentage as in 1960. In engineering, women are even less well represented, making up just 12 percent of working engineers in 2013. The representation of women in engineering and computing occupations matters. Diversity in the workforce contributes to creativity, productivity, and innovation. Women’s experiences—along with men’s experiences— should inform and guide the direction of engineering and technical innova- tion. We simply can’t afford to ignore the perspectives of half the population in future engineering and technical designs. Advocates have long extolled the importance of advancing girls and women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). She is aligning a detector called EGG counter in the center of a beam – something that’s done before each experiment. Physics helps us understand the world around us, the world inside us, and the world beyond us. Physics is the most basic and fundamental science; it deals with how and why matter and energy act as they do. The laws of physics apply to force and motion, gravity, electricity, magnetism, sound, light and heat. They help us understand the physical world and develop products that people need. Mastering physics is fun and challenging. It involves working with others, as well as alone. You learn how to solve problems, observe things carefully, make measurements and keep accurate records. You can use these valuable skills for the rest of your life. They open doors to many good jobs. Physicists ask questions about the physical world and try to find exact answers. They are creative and persistent. Some do basic research. Their goal is to increase our knowledge of the universe. Others do applied research. They use basic knowledge to solve world problems such as food and energy supply, environmental protection, transportation, communication and defense. Physicists work in industry, educational institutions, government, and medical centers today. Most are active scientists and engineers. They do research and development, administration, and teaching. Others use their physics background in fields like publishing, sales, law, accounting and medicine. -

05 Henwood (mh/d) (EJWS) 28/3/00 9:32 am Page 209 From the Woman Question in Technology to the Technology Question in Feminism Rethinking Gender Equality in IT Education Flis Henwood UNIVERSITY OF EAST LONDON ABSTRACT There have, by now, been a number of thorough-going critiques of what has variously been called the ‘equality’, ‘equity’ or ‘liberal’ approach to understanding ‘the woman problem in technology’ by those who would prefer to focus on ‘the technology question in feminism’. Most of these critiques adopt deconstructivist techniques to expose the limitations of equality approaches, including, most centrally, their assumptions about the neutrality of technology and the limited nature of equality programmes designed simply to increase access for women to that technology. However, the critiques themselves have so far failed to come up with convincing alternative interventionist strategies, either because the universalizing tendency of their theoretical perspective gives rise to interventions that fail to deal with the diverse and fragmented nature of women’s experiences and needs, or because recognition of this diversity and fragmentation leaves very little common ground on which to build successful intervention strategies. This article addresses this dilemma in the context of computing and IT education and draws on empirical research on women’s experiences of computing and IT in two different educational settings where issues of gender difference and equality were managed in very contrasting ways. It then offers some suggestions for how both a critical and constructivist discourse on technology might be made to coexist in educational programmes designed to promote gender equality. Hubin _______________________ Professor George Pappas Adviser Philosophy Graduate Program ABSTRACT According to a familiar though naïve conception, science is a rigorously neutral enterprise, free from social and cultural influence, but more sophisticated philosophical views about science have revealed that cultural and personal interests and values are ubiquitous in scientific practice, and thus ought not be ignored when attempting to understand, describe and prescribe proper behavior for the practice of science. Indeed, many theorists have argued that cultural and personal interests and values must be present in science (and knowledge gathering in general) in order to make sense of the world. The concept of objectivity has been utilized in the philosophy of science (as well as in epistemology) as a way to discuss and explore the various types of social and cultural influence that operate in science. The concept has also served as the focus of debates about just how much neutrality we can or should expect in science. This thesis examines feminist ideas regarding how to revise and enrich the concept of objectivity, and how these suggestions help achieve both feminist and scientific goals. Feminists offer us warnings about “idealized” concepts of objectivity, and suggest that power can play a crucial role in determining which research programs get labeled “objective”. -

Therefore the ability to solve problems creatively has been identified as one of the imperative competencies for graduating students. The need to engage more female students to study STEM subjects is a worldwide concern and was also highlighted by US President Barak Obama [2]. By providing knowledge platforms, regardless gender differentiations, helps scientific society to broadness its achievements and consequently improve the industry outcomes. Gender discriminations in educational and occupational field though, have always been under question and investigation. This paper is an attempt to present efforts, motives and incentives that help Qatari female students to excel in their overall engineering studies and career through promoting participation in events, conferences and external competitions. Educating and Inspiring Female Engineers Primary education and school policies targeting in promoting females’ interest in engineering followed by further innovative university education will assist future Qatari female engineering students to reveal and apply more qualification and abilities. -
