Vladimir Spivakov

Vladimir Spivakov is regarded as one of ’s most distinguished musical personalities and enjoys an international reputation as both conductor and violinist. From a former child prodigy, Spivakov established himself as one of the leading violinists of our time. As a conductor he has appeared with the most important orchestras in the world, is conductor of the Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra and since 2003 director of the National Philharmonic of Russia.

Vladimir Spivakov was born in 1944 to a family of musicians in , capital of the Russian Republic of Bashkiria. His international career as a violinist began in 1975 with a highly acclaimed tour of the United States and Europe after winning major international competitions (including Montreal, Long-Thibaud in Paris, Tchaikovsky in Moscow, and Paganini in Genoa). He has played as a soloist with the world’s most famous orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, Munich Philharmonic, Amsterdam Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, and has worked with such renowned conductors as , Georg Solti, Seiji Ozawa, Lorin Maazel, and Claudio Abbado.

In 1979 he made his debut as a conductor with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival. Since then he has appeared on the world’s most important concert stages, conducting the Symphony Orchestras of London, Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Cleveland and Budapest, the La Scala Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Accademia Santa Cecilia, the Cologne Philharmonic, the French Radio Orchestra and all leading Russian orchestras.

The great success of his debut in 1979 led him to found his own orchestra in Russia, the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Ensemble. With its outstanding soloists from the best orchestras in the country, the ensemble quickly gained an international reputation and since then has given over 120 concerts a year all over the world. From 1999 to 2003 Vladimir Spivakov was the conductor of the award-winning Russian National Orchestra.

Since the founding of the National Philharmonic of Russia in 2003, Spivakov has been its artistic director and chief conductor as well as president of the Moscow Centre for Performing Arts. In 1989 he also became artistic director of the Colmar International Music Festival. Furthermore, he is a jury member and chairman of several renowned violin competitions, including the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, the Pablo Sarasate Competition and Monte-Carlo Music Masters.

In addition to his artistic activities, Vladimir Spivakov is distinguished by his immense commitment to humanitarian activities. He is an active member of numerous charities and founded his own foundation in 1994 with which he supports young musicians and artists worldwide. Numerous young talents were thus given the opportunity to pursue an international career.

Vladimir Spivakov has received numerous awards for his artistic and humanitarian achievements. He has been decorated with several national orders of merit by Russia, and Armenia as well as the Mozart Medal of UNESCO, which awarded him the title Artist for Peace in 2006. In 2010 he was given the title of Officer of the French Legion of Honour.
