The Victorian Music Business Career Life Cycle
Career Paths The Victorian Music Business Career Life Cycle The Victorian Music Business Career Life Cycle PREPARED BY DR CATHERINE STRONG, DR FABIAN CANNIZZO AND DR IAN ROGERS FOR THE VICTORIAN MUSIC DEVELOPMENT OFFICE Contact VMDO Level 2, 77 Southbank Boulevard Southbank VIC 3006 (03) 9686 3411 [email protected] Dr Catherine Strong School of Media and Communication RMIT University GPO Box 2476 Melbourne VIC 3001 [email protected] Suggested citation: Strong, C., Cannizzo, F. and Rogers, I. (2020) The Victorian Music Business Career Life Cycle, RMIT University, Melbourne for the Victorian Music Development Office 2 Foreword A message from the VMDO The music industry will always evolve and so will career prospects. This study provides a genuine insight into how change can be managed in an uncertain industry. The skills, knowledge and experience demonstrated by passionate Victorian music industry professionals and businesses are imperative – they solidify and bind so many possibilities for musicians and artists in the music sector. It’s also evident that this extensive and nimble skillset is transferable across many sectors – creative, corporate and non-for-profit. These unsung heroes could include artist managers, record label owners, promoters, publicists, agents, marketing and publishing practitioners (amongst others) who may work for organisations or within their own small or micro music businesses. The Victorian Music Development Office (VMDO) co-designed the Victorian Music Business Career Life Cycle study with RMIT University and Doctor Catherine Strong from the School of Media and Communication, which looks at gaining a deeper understanding of what skills and strategies people need to be successful as a music professional. -

On September 30Th 2014, Sam Fischer Popped a Message on Twitter
On September 30th 2014, Sam Fischer popped a message on Twitter. “Just booked a one way ticket to LA,” he tweeted. “Phwoar.” LA, it turned out, was less aroused. Things got pretty bleak, pretty quickly, and it wasn’t long before Sam had trouble making ends meet. But a mere five years, a couple of false starts and millions of streams later Sam has found his place, his voice, and his audience, both through his own naturally charismatic songs and those he’s written for artists like Ciara, Keith Urban and more. “I try to write uncomplicated, honest truths about myself,” he says of his own work. “Honesty and vulnerability should be celebrated, and if the last five years have taught me anything it’s that you should never be afraid to be your honest self.” Sam spent the earliest part of his life in Australia, on a small farm in the picturesque town of Grose Vale, just outside Kurrajong, just outside Sydney. “I used to come home from school,” Sam reports, “get my kit off and run around the farm naked.” School itself was an hour’s drive away meaning Sam spent plenty of time with his parents’ collection of three compact discs: Whitney Houston’s Bodyguard soundtrack, Michael Jackson’s HIStory, and a random rock compilation album. “That’s it right there on three pieces of plastic,” Sam laughs. “My entire musical education.” He joined the school choir (alongside a pre-fame Delta Goodrem — a fact Sam only recently discovered during a songwriting session with Goodrem two decades later) but the family relocated to Sydney when Sam was seven. -

Perth Music Interviews Ben Stewart (Filmmaker) Amber Flynn
Perth Music Interviews Ben Stewart (Filmmaker) Amber Flynn (Rabbit Island) Sean O’Neill (Hang on Saint Christopher) Bill Darby David Craddock (Davey Craddock and the Spectacles) Scott Tomlinson (Kill Teen Angst) Thomas Mathieson (Mathas) Joe Bludge (The Painkillers) Tracey Read (The Wine Dark Sea) Rob Schifferli (The Leap Year) Chris Cobilis Andy Blaikie by Benedict Moleta December 2011 This collection of interviews was put together over the course of 2011. Some of these people have been involved in music for ten years or more, others not so long. The idea was to discuss background and development, as well as current and long-term musical projects. Benedict Moleta [email protected] Ben Stewart (Filmmaker) Were you born in Perth ? Yeah, I was born in Mt Lawley. You've been working on a music documentary for a while now, what's it about ? I started shooting footage mid 2008. I'm making a feature documentary about a bunch of bands over a period of time, it's an unscientific longitudinal study of sorts. It's a long process because I want to make an observational documentary with the narrative structure of a fiction film. I'm trying to capture a coming of age cliché but character arcs take a lot longer in real life. I remember reading once that rites of passage are good things to structure narratives around, so that's what I'm going to do, who am I to argue with a text book? Fair call. I guess one of the characteristics of bands developing or "coming of age" is that things can emerge, change, pass away and be reconfigured quickly. -
