EVANS hose familiar with the conservative Reformed subculture in the United TStates have likely noticed considerable recent debate on matters soterio- logical (i.e., issues having to do with the doctrine of salvation). Issues long thought settled have emerged with new vigor, new questions have emerged, and long- forgotten or even suppressed aspects of the Reformed tradition have been brought to light. For example, the doctrine of justification by faith, thought by many to be the material principle of the Reformation and a hallmark of Reformed Christianity, is now under intense discussion in a variety of circles. Related to this are, to use John Murray's influential terminology, issues of redemption accomplished (i.e., the work of Christ) and redemption applied (i.e., the nature of the believer's union with Christ and the means of grace). In this article we will look briefly at the prehistory of these matters, where we will discover that there is less novelty in the current discussions than some might initially think. We will then attempt a rough taxonomy of the parties in the debate. Finally, we will offer some observations about the nature and implica tions of these debates. I. Prologue Reformed soteriologe particularly in America, has been anything but mono lithic. At the risk of oversimplifying a complex process of historical develop ment, let us begin with Calvin, who set a formal agenda for most subsequent Reformed thinking by highlighting the Pauline theme of union with Christ. -

1 The Kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ Over All Report on the Doctrine of the Two Kingdoms Approved by the Western Classis of the Reformed Church in the U.S., 2016 Preface A new view of social ethics and culture has been proposed in recent years by a number of professors at Westminster Seminary in California. The Two Kingdom viewpoint (2K), comprises a distinctive theology and way of interpreting the Bible, and has gained a certain following due to the influence of Dr. David VanDrunen, Dr. Michael Horton, and others who teach at Escondido. Its broad proposal is that Reformed Christians and evangelicals should make a comprehensive shift toward secularism in their way of interacting with culture, ethics, and politics. In 2012 the Western Classis of the Reformed Church in the U.S. formed a special committee to study “The Doctrine of the Two Kingdoms with specific recommendations on how to respond to this teaching.” In 2014 the Classis voted to continue this committee, giving special emphasis on the role of the Cultural Mandate. In 2015 the committee consisted of Pastors Jim West (chairman), Tracy Gruggett, Paul Treick, Eric D. Bristley, and elder Greg Uttinger. The committee also added an expanded review of the Reformed tradition as represented by Calvin, Reformed Orthodoxy, Ursinus, the Reformed confessions, Kuyper, and Neo-Calvinism. In 2016 the committee’s work was completed so that it was ready to move its recommendations. The Western Classis met at Grace Reformed Church in Willows, California, for its regular Spring meeting in March, 2016, at which this report was presented. -

PEER-REVIEWED ARTICLE Inclusive Quarantine: The Pathology and Performance of Jewish Existence in the Erlangen Opinion on the Aryan Paragraph Ryan Tafilowski, The University of Edinburgh Introduction. The equivocal nature of the Erlangen Opinion In the spring of 1933, Lutheran theologian Paul Al- thaus (1888-1966) greeted the rise of National Socialism as a “gift and miracle of God.”1 Having served as a military hospital chaplain among German expatriates in Poland during the First World War, he was a nationalist for whom the discipline and order of Nazism did indeed look like good news. And he was by no means the only one; at the twilight of the Weimar Re- public many clergy hoped that the new government would usher in Germany’s spiritual and moral renewal. But the Nazi seizure of power did radically alter the landscape of German church life. In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Theology Awarded by Wycliffe College and the University of Toronto. © Copyright by Mark Kim, 2013 Michael Horton’s Covenant Theology as a Defense of Reformation Theology in the Context of Current Discussions Mark Kim Doctor of Theology Wycliffe College of University of Toronto 2013 Abstract In contemporary theological scholarship the federal theology of post-Reformation Reformed orthodoxy has come under trenchant criticism from two fronts: those who argue that the schema elevates the role of the human will in individual redemption to offset the problematic aspects of Augustinian predestinarianism (thereby degenerating into a form of evangelical legalism) or those who see the schema as a radical contradiction of the relation between law and gospel, which contradiction departed from the views of John Calvin, Martin Bucer, and other sixteenth century Reformers (thereby supporting a type of antinomianism). The purpose of this dissertation is to argue, through our examination of Michael S. Horton’s covenant theology (and the views of Reformed theologians of earlier times), that classic federalism avoids both the twin dangers of legalism and antinomianism through upholding the dual covenant of works/covenant of grace structure (especially as it pertains to the doctrine of justification) and through maintaining the mutually binding aspect of the covenant of grace between God and the elect. -

Many scholars view the radical form of Protestantism expressed by this group as a by-product of Nazism. However, I argue that ideas promoting the de-Judaization of Protestantism were already existent within Protestant theology and that Hitler’s rise to power merely provided the opportunity for these ideas to come to fruition. I examine this topic by analyzing nationalistic and anti-Jewish ideas in German Protestant theological texts during the early twentieth century, focusing on how these ideas informed the later de-Judaization of certain churches between 1932 and 1945 under the German Christian movement, which included actions like eliminating the Old Testament from the Protestant Bible and refusing to recognize Jewish conversion to Christianity. -

Introduction A PORTION OF this essay first saw life as a speech under the title, “The Two Kingdoms: A Lutheran or a Reformed Idea?” Of course, the ques- tion posed in that title holds little suspense as such, for anyone fa- miliar with the rudiments of Luther’s and Calvin’s theologies knows that each Reformer taught a doctrine of the two kingdoms.2 The sus- pense, if we may call it that, has to do with the content each writer poured into the doctrine. Even a casual perusal of the secondary lit- erature on Luther’s and Calvin’s thought reveals that whereas there is an abundance of resources that examine Luther’s doctrine of “the two kingdoms,” by comparison, there is a paucity of materials that explore Calvin’s understanding of this subject. Certainly there is no lack of books and articles that treat Calvin’s understanding of church and state, along with the role and responsibility of the civil magis- trate—all of which note that Calvin clearly taught a doctrine of a two- fold government of God, by means of which God through the state orders human life in general and through the church governs believ- ers in their life of faith in particular. Consequently, in broadest out- line, Luther’s and Calvin’s doctrines of the two kingdoms overlap at numerous points and similarly address many common issues. None- theless, a doctrine of “two kingdoms” comes to something different in Luther’s thought than it does in Calvin’s.
