BROCKER Pastor Bonhoeffer Becomes a Conspirator On June 17, 1940, in the early stages of World War II, France surrendered to Germany. Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his closest friend and colleague, Eberhard Bethge, were having a leisurely lunch in a café in the Baltic village of Memel. They were in East Prussia doing three visitations on behalf of the Confessing Church, which had issued the Barmen Declaration in 1934 and struggled against the inroads of the Nazis into the life of the church. They had met with a group of pastors in the morning, and Bonhoeffer was scheduled to preach in a Confessing Church congregation that evening. According to Bethge, when the announcement of France’s surrender came over the café loudspeaker, “the people around the tables could hardly contain them- selves; they jumped up, and some even climbed on the chairs. With outstretched arms they sang ‘Deutschland, Deutschland über alles’ and the Horst Wessel song. We had stood up, too.” Bethge was shocked, however, when “Bonhoeffer raised his arm Bonhoeffer’s Christian faith and his roles as theologian and pastor led him to active engagement with the very dangerous world around him, which led to his imprisonment. In prison he was led to examine and deepen his commit- ments both to this world and to the coming kingdom of Christ in ways that each informed and enriched the other. 363 Brocker in the regulation Hitler salute.” Recognizing his friend’s shock, Bonhoeffer whis- pered to him, “Raise your arm! Are you crazy?” Shortly thereafter Bonhoeffer added: “We shall have to run risks for very different things now, but not for that salute!”1 In Bethge’s assessment, Bonhoeffer’s “double life” truly began in that moment. -

Hall \ THE MISSIONARY SPIRIT IN THE AUGUSTANA CHURCH The American church is made up of many varied groups, depending on origin, divisions, changing relationships. One of these was the Augustana Lutheran Church, founded by Swedish Lutheran immigrants and maintain ing an independent existence from 1860 to 1962 when it became a part of a larger Lutheran community, the Lutheran Church of America. The character of the Augustana Church can be studied from different viewpoints. In this volume Dr. George Hall describes it as a missionary church. It was born out of a missionary concern in Sweden for the thousands who had emigrated. As soon as it was formed it began to widen its field. Then its representatives were found in In dia, Puerto Rico, in China. The horizons grew to include Africa and Southwest Asia. Two World Wars created havoc, but also national and international agencies. -

Finally, I am forever grateful to my parents, who have supported my passion and interest in studying theology, and to my brother, who first introduced me to Bonhoeffer and remains a faithful sounding board for all my musings about theology, philosophy, music, and of course, movies. iii Abstract: If one takes the assertions of Christianity seriously – that God became incarnate, was crucified, resurrected, and will come again – then one faces complex questions about worldly human responsibility and agency. Indeed, God’s apocalyptic intervention in history appears to override the possibility of meaningful human responsibility or agency, seemingly eliminating the possibility of Christian ethics. In this paper, I explore this ‘problem of Christian ethics,’ finding a solution in a reading of the theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer through the lens of Pauline apocalyptic. I argue that Bonhoeffer restores the viability and integrity of Christian ethics by adopting a thoroughly apocalyptic theology, affirming human responsibility and agency in a world that is ultimately in the hands of a sovereign God. Far from issuing a call to follow an ethical program or a facile imitation of Jesus, Bonhoeffer develops what scholar Philip Ziegler calls a “theological ethics of God’s apocalypse,” one in which human knowledge, agency, and ethics are radically transformed by the apocalypse of Christ’s incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection. -

Schließlich verstieß er als Sohn aus »guter Gesellschaft« gegen die ehernen Prinzipien dieser Gesell- schaft; und schon zu seinen Lebzeiten ist ihm sein Klassenverrat niemals verziehen worden. Narrated by Eberhard Bethge, his personal friend, companion and biographer, the play follows Bonhoeffer from his years as a seminary professor in northern Germany, through the turbulent challenges presented by Hitler’s efforts to seize and wield power in both the state and the church. Bonhoeffer is seen leading his students to organize an underground seminary, to distribute clandestine anti-Nazi literature, and eventually to declare open public defiance of Hitler’s authority. -

At this writing, at the beginning of 2011, no one with any memories of that period of world history is under the age of seventy-five. War veterans that survive today are more than eighty years old. Memories fade. People carry their own stories into the grave. It is now up to the historians and philosophers to help us explore and struggle with that terrible time in human history. As Lutherans, we need to continue to probe our own theology and culture in light of the German Nazi experience. How do we make sense of a time where in the most Lutheran country in the world, a philosophy arose that was responsible for the global disaster of World War II? We ask ourselves the tough questions. How could all of this have happened? Did Lutheranism shape the Nazi movement? Was the Lutheran community a willing accomplice to the Nazis in Germany, or were Lutherans (as was Dietrich Bonhoeffer) valiant resisters? Is Bonhoeffer popular in the post- war German church because he was typical of Lutheran anti-Nazi heroism, or did he prove the rule, by his life exception, that the Lutheran church in Germany was totally corrupt and compromised? Indeed, is Bonhoffer’s memory being abused by those who would look to the church as somehow an island of resistance in the sea of Gospel betrayal? Was the Lutheran Church in Germany as fascist as the Nazi regime? These questions, and many more, have been the subject of an entire field of historical studies for the past sixty years. -

Sylvester Michelfelder Country of origin: New Washington, Ohio, USA Date of birth: 27.10.1889 Date of death: 30.12.1951 Period of mandate: 1947-1951 Short biography: From German descent, Michelfelder was not an academic theologian. It was his skill as pastor, organizer and team leader that caused Ralph Long, director of the National Lutheran Council in New York to send him as commissioner of the American Section of the Lutheran World Convention to the rising World Council of Churches. On 18 July 1945, he arrived with his wife in Geneva after having crossed the ocean on the Miraposa and travelled by rail from Cherbourg which gave him ample evidence of emergency needs in Europe. Operations in Germany in the early post-war period was the first task of Michelfelder with led into close ties of confidence and networks of cooperation with German church leaders such as Hanns Lilje and Hans Meiser. His major accomplishment became then the careful preparation of the first Assembly of the LWF which represented international interaction between sisters and brothers of the same faith. Michelfelder had clear ideas for an Assembly with a three-part program: confessing the truth in a confused world, concentrated on the Word, the church and the sacraments, a section on evangelism, stewardship, foreign missions and aid operation and a final section on facing the problems in a troubled world. His abilities as an administrator became apparent particularly in two connections: when he prepared and led the First Assembly and when he led in the formation of a functional structure for the whole LWF, the Geneva Secretariat and the national committees. -

Crossing Bearing and Life in a Lutheran Synod: What Can We Learn from Hermann Sasse? The Emmaus Conference Tacoma, Washington 1-2 May 2014 “The Lutheran Churches are still sunning themselves in the delusion that they have something to expect from the world other than the dear holy cross, which all those must carry who proclaim God’s Law and the Gospel of Jesus Christ to mankind. But this delusion will soon disappear”1 so wrote Hermann Sasse in March, 1949. While not exactly equivalent to synods in North American Lutheranism, Hermann Sasse 2(1895-1976) had his own experience with church governments as places for bearing the cross in Germany and later on in Australia. A son of a church of the Prussian Union, Sasse would become a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria, and eventually he would leave that body to immigrate to Australia where he would become a member of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Australia and then after that body’s merger with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Australia, the Lutheran Church of Australia. I propose that Sasse suggests not only a theology of the cross but an ecclesiology of the cross. As Udo Schnelle would put it: “The existence of the church itself is already an application of the theology of the cross.” 3Not long after re-locating to Australia, Sasse would write one of his “letters to Lutheran pastors” on the theologia crucis. This letter, a brilliant and concise introduction to Luther’s conceptuality of the theology of the cross; it also has ramifications for the theme of this paper, cross bearing in the life of a Lutheran Synod.
