    1997 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance Film Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (Errol Morris, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, Kevin Smith), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. It was a fi tting tribute to both Fassbinder and the Festival and the ways that American independent cinema was indeed becoming international.     Adapting a Literary Nation to Film: National Identity, Neoromanticism and the Anxiety of Influence BJÖRN ÆGIR NORÐFJÖRÐ ABSTRACT: This essay addresses the interrelations of film and literature in the Icelandic context by focusing primarily on two case studies. The first regards an early twentieth-century group of Neoromantic writers, commonly known as the Varangians, whose plays and novels provided the narrative material for the first fiction features set in Iceland. The second addresses the conspicuous lack of adaptations made from either the medieval sagas or the work of Iceland’s most celebrated novelist, Halldór Laxness. It is argued that this lack stems from the high regard in which literature, and these works in particular, is held in Iceland—suggestive of a certain anxiety in tackling its literary heritage. Ultimately, the two case studies point towards the strong ties between literature and national identity. As a result Icelandic cinema has swayed aberrantly from an overt reliance on literature to attempts at distancing itself from it. According to the essay, both strategies are characteristic of filmmaking in a nation whose national identity privileges language and literature. RÉSUMÉ: Cet essai s’intéresse aux interrelations du film et de la littérature dans le contexte islandais en se concentrant d’abord sur deux études de cas. La première étude concerne un groupe d’auteurs néoromantiques du début du vingtième siècle, les Varègues, dont les pièces et les romans ont fourni le matériel narratif des premiers longs-métrages islandais. La deuxième s’intéresse au manque évident d’adaptations inspirées de sagas médiévales ou de l’oeuvre du plus célèbre romancier islandais, Halldór Laxness.

    Ísland og Íslendingar Ísland og Íslendingar eru hluti af kennsluefni sem stofnunin gaf út árið 2004 á margmiðlunaformi og nefnist Carry on Icelandic: Learn Icelandic and enjoy it!. Carry on Icelandic er byrjendaefni í íslensku og einkum ætlað skiptinemum á háskólastigi. Nína Leósdóttir íslenskukennari skrifaði þann hluta efnisins sem fjallar um Ísland og Íslendinga. Textinn er byggður á fjölda heimilda en tölfræði upplýsingar eru fengnar af vef Hagstofu Íslands. Við birtum efnið hér öðrum til gagns og gamans. Landið Ísland, eyja í Atlantshafi Ísland er önnur stærsta eyjan í Evrópu og sú þriðja stærsta í Atlantshafi, 103.000 km2 að stærð, miðja vegu milli New York og Moskvu. Landið liggur á mótum heitra og kaldra hafstrauma auk þess sem heitt og kalt loft mætist gjarnan í grennd við Ísland. Þetta gerir það að verkum að landið er viðkvæmt fyrir loftslagsbreytingum. Þegar hafís frá Grænlandi er úti fyrir landinu, eða við strendur þess, kólnar í ári. Ísinn nær þó ekki ströndum Íslands í venjulegu árferði en á svokölluðum hafísárum getur hann borist að Norðvestur-, Norður - og Austurlandi. Sumur eru svöl og vetur mildir. Meðalhiti í Reykjavík í janúar er um það bil 0°C og 12°C í júlí. Á norðanverðu landinu er mun kaldara og oft snjóar þar mikið á veturna. Vegna norðlægrar legu landsins er bjart allan sólarhringinn tvo til þrjá mánuði á ári að sumri til. Á vorin og haustin eru kvöldin björt og löng. Frá miðjum nóvember til loka janúar er aftur á móti mjög dimmt og dagsbirtu nýtur ekki nema í þrjá til fjóra tíma á dag.
