Curiosity in the World When You Lean Into Your Curiosity, You Become More Open to New Experiences Curiosity in the World When you lean into your curiosity, you become more open to new experiences. While international travel is a great way to broaden your perspective, there are many other ways you can learn about different cultures while staying at home. What’s Going On? One way to engage your curiosity about the world around you is to read about current events in a different country. In this activity, you will begin thinking about issues that concern the local population of a country other than the United States. Instructions: Pick a foreign country to focus on. This should be a country that you are curious about, but one that you have never visited. Do some research to determine what current events are affecting the local population of your chosen country. Find and read one local news article from the country you have chosen. The source you use must be from the same country you are writing about! (e.g. The Guardian - UK, Le Monde - France, El País - Spain, etc.) Once you have read the article, consider to the following questions: • What is the article about? How would you summarize the article in your own words? • Why did you choose this article? Why was it of interest to you? • How is the topic of your chosen article important to the local population? • What website did you use? How do you know this is a reputable news source? • Why is it important to use a news source that is based in the country you chose? You may compose your response as a written journal entry or presentation, with one paragraph/slide per question. Go Further: Compare and contrast the article you analyzed with a current events article from your own community. What issues are people in your community concerned about? How would you answer the questions above for your local article? Exploring Foreign Films and Novels Foreign films and novels are a great resource to help you gain exposure to a new culture, without having to leave your front door. In this activity, you will select a film and novel to serve as sources for a comparative analysis designed to activate your prior knowledge and explore new material. Instructions: Identify a country that you are curious about but have never visited. Find a film AND a novel that are set in the country you have chosen. Note: We recommend that you do not choose a film that is an adaptation of your novel. If you are stuck, check out the recommendation list at the end of this worksheet! Of course, you are invited to take additional recommendations from family and teachers. © WorldStrides 2020, 2004-CUR-203269 1 For each topic, consider the following: • How is the topic presented in the film and in the novel? What similarities and differences do you notice? • Why is the setting important in the portrayal of this topic? • How can you relate this topic to your own personal experience? • How might you experience this topic if you were to travel to this country in the future? You may compose your response as a full-sentence, alphanumeric outline (bit.ly/2BLKPqQ). Each topic should be a separate heading, with subheadings for the film, the novel, and your personal experience with the topic. Provide at least two supports per subheading. Comparing Social Norms Social norms are the informal rules that govern our behavior in society. They aren’t explicitly written down or stated, but we follow them nonetheless! In this activity, you will identify and compare social norms across cultures. Resources: Watch this brief video clip for a humorous example of a social norm that is not a law—although some people may feel strongly about it! Check out the video here. WATCH: youtu.be/KLOyChP2AWA Read this interview with Michele Gelfand where she explains the difference between ‘tight’ and ‘loose’ cultures and how different cultures enforce social norms. Read the interview here. WEBSITE: behavioralscientist.org/tight-and-loose- cultures-a-conversation-with-michele-gelfand/ Finally, read this article from Scientific American that builds on Michele’s idea by applying it to the United States. Read the article here. WEBSITE: scientificamerican.com/article/tightness-and-looseness-a- new-way-to-understand-differences-across-the-50-united-states/ Instructions: To begin, pick a foreign country to focus on. In this activity, you will be comparing social norms in your selected country to social norms in your home state. Step 1 – Conduct some research on your chosen country to answer the following questions: • Using Michele’s criteria, does this country have a ‘tight’ or ‘loose’ culture? • What are five examples of social norms you would encounter if you visited this country? • What reasons can you give for why these social norms exist? Step 2 – Now, do a similar analysis of your home state. • In your opinion, and using Michele’s criteria, does your state have a ‘tight’ or ‘loose’ culture? • How does this compare to the United States’ culture at large? • What are five examples of social norms that a traveler would encounter were they to visit your state? • What reasons can you give for why these social norms exist? Step 3 – Make a comparison between the country you researched and your home community. • How do the cultures relate? What similarities or differences do you notice? • Are there any norms that overlap between cultures? Are there any norms that conflict? Create! Share your research in the form of a social media campaign. Your campaign should have ten posts: five advertising the destination you researched to potential travelers and five advertising your home state. In each post, aim to inform your audience of the social norms they may encounter, and share why it is important to educate oneself as a traveler. Your posts can be in the form of a document or presentation and must combine images and text. Students! Answering our questions? Using our strategies? Share them with us at [email protected]. © WorldStrides 2020, 2004-CUR-203269 2 Suggested Film & Book List Cuba Films Cuban-produced: The Beauty of the Alhambra (1989) Austria Death of a Bureaucrat (1966) Austrian-produced: I Am Cuba (1964) Die Stadt ohne Juden / The City Without Jews The Last Supper (1976) (1924) Memories of Underdevelopment (1968) The Seventh Continent (1989) Portrait of Teresa (1979) Sissi (1955) Strawberry and Chocolate (1993) The White Ribbon (2009) Suite Habana (2003) Viva Cuba (2005) Foreign-produced: Amadeus (1984) Foreign-produced: *Jules and Jim (1962) Before Night Falls (2000) The Sound of Music (1965) Buena Vista Social Club (1999) The Third Man (1949) Our Man in Havana (1959) The Woman in Gold (2015) Czech Republic / Czechoslovakia China Adelheid (1969) Chung Kuo, Cina (1972) Alois Nebel (2011) Close to Eden (1992) Closely Watched Trains (1966) Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) *Daisies (1966) Girl From Hunan (1986) The Ear (1970) Hero (2003) The Firemen’s Ball (1967) Jug Dou (1991) I Served the King of England (2006) Life on a String (1991) Intimate Lighting (1965) Not One Less (1999) Marketa Lazarova (1967) Once Upon a Time in China (2003) Raise the Red Lantern (1992) France Red Sorghum (1989) French-produced: Small Happiness (1984) The 400 Blows (1959) The Forbidden City (1918) Amélie (2001) The Last Emperor (1987) Au Revoir Les Enfants (1987) To Live (1994) Bande à part / Band of Outsiders (1964) Unruly Dragon (1988) Le Cercle Rouge (1970) Yellow Earth (1988) Les Choristes (2003) *Day for Night (1973) Costa Rica The Dinner Game (1998) Agua fría de mar (2010) The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) Bonne année (2006) – short film Les Enfants du Paradis / Children of Paradise C’est comme ça (2005) – short film (1945) El Camino (2007) Entre les murs / The Class (2008) *Gestación (2009) Etre et avoir (2002) *Presos (2015) Les femmes du sixième étage (2010) Girlhood (2014) La Grande Illusion / The Grand Illusion (1937) *La Haine (1995) * recommended only for mature audiences Updated 9/2019 The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939, 1996) Signs of Life (1968) The Intouchables (2011) Sophie Scholl (2005) cont. Writing from the Periphery: W. G. Sebald and Outsider Art by Melissa Starr Etzler A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in German and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Winfried Kudszus, Chair Professor Anton Kaes Professor Anne Nesbet Spring 2014 Abstract Writing from the Periphery: W. G. Sebald and Outsider Art by Melissa Starr Etzler Doctor of Philosophy in German and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Winfried Kudszus, Chair This study focuses on a major aspect of literature and culture in the later twentieth century: the intersection of psychiatry, madness and art. As the antipsychiatry movement became an international intervention, W. G. Sebald’s fascination with psychopathology rapidly developed. While Sebald collected many materials on Outsider Artists and has several annotated books on psychiatry in his personal library, I examine how Sebald’s thought and writings, both academic and literary, were particularly influenced by Ernst Herbeck’s poems. Herbeck, a diagnosed schizophrenic, spent decades under the care of Dr. Leo Navratil at the psychiatric institute in Maria Gugging. Sebald became familiar with Herbeck via the book, Schizophrenie und Sprache (1966), in which Navratil analyzed his patients’ creative writings in order to illustrate commonalities between pathological artistic productions and canonical German literature, thereby blurring the lines between genius and madness. In 1980, Sebald travelled to Vienna to meet Ernst Herbeck and this experience inspired him to compose two academic essays on Herbeck and the semi-fictionalized account of their encounter in his novel Vertigo (1990).

1997 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance Film Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (Errol Morris, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, Kevin Smith), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. • Franz A. Birgel Muhlenberg College
Werner Herzog's Debt to Georg Buchner Franz A. Birgel Muhlenberg College The filmmaker Wemcr Herzog has been labeled eve1)1hing from a romantic, visionary idealist and seeker of transcendence to a reactionary. regressive fatalist and t)Tannical megalomaniac. Regardless of where viewers may place him within these e:-..1reme positions of the spectrum, they will presumably all admit that Herzog personifies the true auteur, a director whose unmistakable style and wor1dvie\v are recognizable in every one of his films, not to mention his being a filmmaker whose art and projected self-image merge to become one and the same. He has often asserted that film is the art of i1literates and should not be a subject of scholarly analysis: "People should look straight at a film. That's the only \vay to see one. Film is not the art of scholars, but of illiterates. And film culture is not analvsis, it is agitation of the mind. Movies come from the count!)' fair and circus, not from art and academicism" (Greenberg 174). Herzog wants his ideal viewers to be both mesmerized by his visual images and seduced into seeing reality through his eyes. In spite of his reference to fairgrounds as the source of filmmaking and his repeated claims that his ·work has its source in images, it became immediately transparent already after the release of his first feature film that literature played an important role in the development of his films, a fact which he usually downplays or effaces. Given Herzog's fascination with the extremes and mysteries of the human condition as well as his penchant for depicting outsiders and eccentrics, it comes as no surprise that he found a kindred spirit in Georg Buchner whom he has called "probably the most ingenious writer for the stage that we ever had" (Walsh 11).

  • Fragments of the Past in Pedro Almodóvar's Broken
Palabras clave: Almodóvar, nostalgia, Baudrillard, flashback, Los abrazos rotos ABSTRACT: Pedro Almodóvar’s oeuvre encompasses a collection of themes and references to his own back catalogue, all the while referencing many other well-known directors. Broken Embraces (2009) refers to and re-enacts scenes from Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988). Yet the references to the latter in Broken Embraces fail to enchant, instead creating a fragmentation of the past and ultimately shifting from a breakdown to being simply broken.
