German Gymnasium Grand Café Group Dining

GERMAN GYMNASIUM GRAND CAFÉ GROUP DINING Summer 2018 OUR HISTORY Designed by Edward Gruning, the German Gymnasium was the first purpose-built gymnasium in England and was influential in the development of athletics in Britain. It was built in 1864-65 for the German Gymnastics Society. This sporting association was established in London in 1861 by Ernst Ravenstein. The building cost £6,000 and was funded solely by the German community in London. The National Olympian Association held the indoor events of the first Olympic Games here in 1866. These games continued annually at the German Gymnasium until the White City games in 1908. The main exercise hall was a grand and elegant space with a floor to ceiling height of 57ft. Long forgotten sports were practiced here, including Indian club swinging and broadsword practice. The German Gymnastics Society had a forward-thinking approach to women's exercise, with classes taking place here from as early as 1866. The building ceased to be used as a gymnasium some time pre-war and has been used as offices, storage and an arts and exhibition space since that time. 1 WELCOME TO GERMAN GYMNASIUM Areas of the Grand Café can be reserved for groups wishing to enjoy the buzz of the open kitchen and bar. Alternatively for that large party you can take over the whole venue exclusively. Capacities Up to 30 guests Seated breakfast lunch and dinner 2 GROUP DINING MENU For groups of up to 16 guests the set menu is available to choose from on the night. Groups of 17 and above please reduce the 1 menu to 1 starter, 1 main course & 1 dessert to be enjoyed by the group.

    Where Gemëtlichkeit Happens

Thanks to you, our dreams have come true. For over a decade, we have strived to provide you, our Guest, with a high quality meal with a lot of Gemütlichkeit (a state of well-being and enjoyment you feel when sharing good food and drink among friends and family). We pride ourselves on having an attentive and well-trained staff who prepare, sell, and serve our high quality products. Our specialty is German cuisine featuring sausages, cold cuts, Schnitzels, breads and desserts based on Hollerbach family recipes. Back in 1981, Linda and I first started thinking about opening our own restaurant. We opened the Willow Tree Café in August 2001 and thanks to you, our guests and our great staff, we have been growing ever since. We have expanded the restaurant from the initial 75 seats to our current capacity of over 275, which includes a full service bar. In 2011 we opened Magnolia Square Market, a true German Delikatessen where you can find your favorite German products, including gluten- free items, wine, and beers, as well as fresh baked goods. We want to thank the residents of Downtown Sanford and our Business Neighbors for letting us be a contributing partner in making our town great. We encourage you to enjoy our food and hospitality, and we welcome you into our family. Vielen Dank! • A Round of Applause

    A Round of Applause

Traditional southern chess pie features a simple egg-and-sugar custard; this version adds tart lemon and sweet Cara Cara orange juices for a vibrant tang. It’s topped with a “plate” of crust— the fluted rounds punched out from the center dot the pie’s rim—and finished with confectioners’ sugar. A ROUND OF APPLAUSE cit r u s chess pie Creating a crowd-pleasing showstopper of a pie is easier than it seems. We’ve updated classic fillings and decorated them with eye-catching crusts that almost any baker can master. Here, we reveal our clever tricks, walking you through them step by step. The only hard part is picking which to try first. PHOTOGRAPHS BY WILL ANDERSON • RECIPES BY SHIRA BOCAR AND LAURYN TYRELL • TEXT BY SARAH DIGREGORIO 91 brown-sugar butternut-squash pie For recipes, see page 136; for decorating techniques, see page 96. A PIE FULL OF STARS Butternut squash is sweeter and smoother than more-fibrous pumpkin—it’s a wonder it’s not used in desserts more often. Roasting the flesh supplies a caramel note, while puréeing and straining it afterward is key for a silky texture. Upgrade a crimped crust with a fishtail-braided rim and a scattering of cutouts. You can arrange the pieces however you like; this crescent-shaped tumble was inspired by a vintage brooch. 92 chocolate-sesame tarte soleil THE SUN ALSO RISES With semisweet chocolate and tahini frangipane layered inside, this radiant tart takes its cue from the candied, nutty flavors of chocolate-covered halvah. The sesame lends a complex, almost bitter edge that keeps the filling from being too sweet.
