Results Evolutionary distinctiveness differed according to the phylogeny used, and conservation assessment ranks varied according to the chosen proxy of extinction risk. Two of the three main areas of high phylogenetic diversity were coincident with areas of high species richness. A third area was identified only by one phylogeny and was not a richness hotspot. Faunal assemblages identified by level of endemism, habitat loss, biome type or the presence in biodiversity hotspots captured phylogenetic diversity levels no better than random assem- blages.

In the present work, the protein composition of this venom was profiled using the ‘snake venomics’ analytical strategy. Decomplexation of the crude venom by RP-HPLC and SDS-PAGE, followed by tandem mass spectrometry of tryptic digests, showed that it consists of proteins assigned to at least nine snake toxin families. Metalloproteinases are predominant in this secretion (41.5% of the total proteins), followed by C-type lectin/lectin-like proteins (16.7%), bradykinin-potentiating peptides (10.7%), phos- pholipases A2 (9.3%), serine proteinases (5.4%), disintegrins (3.8%), L-amino acid oxidases (3.1%), vascular endothelial growth factors (1.7%), and cysteine- rich secretory proteins (1.2%). Altogether, 6.6% of the proteins were not identified. In vitro, the venom exhibited proteolytic, phospholipase A2, and L-amino acid oxi- dase activities, as well as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory activity, in agreement with the obtained proteomic profile. Methods NPIS telephone enquiries and TOXBASE® user sessions, the NPIS online information database, related to AMT were reviewed from March 2009 to September 2013. Telephone enquiry data were compared with those for mephedrone, the recreational substance most frequently reported to the NPIS, collected over the same period. Results There were 63 telephone enquiries regarding AMT during the period of study, with no telephone enquiries in 2009 or 2010, 19 in 2011, 35 in 2012 and 9 in 2013 (up to September). Most patients were male (68%) with a median age of 20 years. The route of exposure was ingestion in 55, insufflation in 4 and unknown in 4 cases. LAMAR Despite the contributions made to crotaline systematics over the last few decades (for example, Gloyd, 1940; Klauber, 1972; Campbell and Lamar, 1989; Gloyd and Conant, 1991), the systematic status of several taxa remains questionable. We herein attempt to resolve some of these problems. Terminology follows Klauber (1972); the method of counting scales is that of Dowling (1951). We argue that recognition of certain N eotropical genera (Bothriechis and Bothriopsis) accurately reflects our knowledge of natural groups and adheres to modem systematic practice. Conversely, the evidence that the genus Bothrops as presently comprised is monophyletic is less compelling. The name Bothrops, contrary to the views of several recent authors (for example, Schatti et al., 1990, and Shatti and Kramer, 1991), is masculine in gender (Smith and Larsen, 1974; Inter­ nat. Code Zool. Nomenclature, 1985, art. 30a, ii). The variation and generic allocation of Bothrops albocarinatus Shreve ( 1934) are dis­ cussed and its distribution is redefined to include south-central Colom­ bia. We discuss the reasons for our distinction between Bothrops asper and B. atrox (Campbell and Lamar, 1989), and suggest that possibly several additional unrecognized species may be present in the asper­ atrox complex. Bothrops microphthalmus colombianus Rendahl and Vestergren (1940) is elevated to specific status. Abstract: Snake species within genus Bothrops are responsible for more than 80% of the snakebites occurring in South America. The species that cause most envenomings in Argentina, B. diporus, is widely distributed throughout the country, but principally found in the Northeast, the region with the highest rates of snakebites. The venom proteome of this medically relevant snake was unveiled using a venomic approach. It comprises toxins belonging to fourteen protein families, being dominated by PI- and PIII-SVMPs, PLA2 molecules, BPP-like peptides, L-amino acid oxidase and serine proteinases. This toxin profile largely explains the characteristic pathophysiological effects of bothropic snakebites observed in patients envenomed by B. diporus. Antivenomic analysis of the SAB antivenom (Instituto Vital Brazil) against the venom of B. diporus showed that this pentabothropic antivenom efficiently recognized all the venom proteins and exhibited poor affinity towards the small peptide (BPPs and tripeptide inhibitors of PIII-SVMPs) components of the venom.

    VIGILANCIA DE LOS ACCIDENTES CAUSADOS POR ANIMALES PONZOÑOSOS Protocolo de Vigilancia de los Accidentes por Animales Ponzoñosos 1. ENTRADA 1.1. DEFINICIÓN DEL EVENTO. Descripción: La vigilancia del accidente causado por animal ponzoñoso consiste en su identificación (agente), seguimiento, monitoreo y evaluación de las condiciones ambientales que constituyen riesgo para la salud colectiva, asi como el seguimiento, tratamiento, recuperación y rehabilitación del paciente accidentado. 1.2 DEFINICIONES OPERATIVAS. ACCIDENTE POR ANIMAL PONZOÑOSO. Los accidentes por animales ponzoñosos son los causados por serpientes (ofidios), arañas, abejas y alacranes (escorpiones), los cuales pueden causar alteraciones leves o graves en la salud de la víctima, inclusive su muerte, dependiendo del tipo de lesión y del sitio de exposición, así como del tamaño y especie de animal causante del evento. En Colombia y más específicamente en Antioquia la mayor gravedad y letalidad de los accidentes son los causados por serpientes y en una pequeña proporción los accidentes por alacranes, abejas y arañas. 1.2.1. Accidente ofídico. Es el ocasionado como consecuencia de la mordedura (agresión) por serpientes. En el mundo existen aproximadamente 3.000 especies de serpientes. En Colombia se encuentran aproximadamente 230 especies distribuidas en ocho familias, de esas 8 familias solo 2 se consideran venenosas: Las familias Viperidae y Elapidae y una sola especie en el mar, la especie Pelamis platurus, que se encuentra exclusivamente en el Océano Pacífico.
