Language Learning is proud to extend its support of open science practices by participating in the OASIS (Open Accessible Summaries in Language Studies) initiative, which aims to make language- related research openly available and easily accessible, both physically and conceptually. As part of the OASIS initiative, Language Learning now publishes accessible sum- maries of all accepted articles, including reviews and syntheses. Definite articles in Indo- European languages – in those grammatical systems where they are present – are derived from ancient demonstratives through a grammaticalization process: given that demonstratives are deictic expressions (i.e. they depend on a frame of reference which is external to that of the speaker and of the interlocutor) with the role of selecting a referent or a set of referents, it is easy to understand what the role of “universal quantifier” of the, which is in English the prototypical – but questionable – example of definiteness, is due to. One path is from a first-person plural pronoun to a first-person dual pronoun. Synchronically, the pronominal forms in Barayin with first-person dual number must now be combined with a plural addressee enclitic, nà, to create a first-person plural pronoun. This path is identical to what has been documented in Philippine-type languages. The other path is from a first-person dative suffix to a suffix dedicated to first-person hortative. This path of grammaticalization has not been discussed in the literature. It occurred in several related languages, and each in case results in a hortative form with a dual subject. Hortative forms with a plural subject are created by adding a plural addressee marker to the dual form. The plural addressee marker in Chadic languages is derived from a second-person pronominal. Established in 2017 from a committee of five Linguistics and Speech Science undergraduate students, the Language Sciences Undergraduate Research Conference (LSURC) was formed with the goal of creating an opportunity for undergraduate students to explore language and communication research with an interdisciplinary perspective. While inaugurated at UBC Vancouver, we attempt to expand our reach to undergraduate students studying in other disciplines and at other institutions in order to facilitate undergraduate engagement with language research. Our committee (composed of undergraduate students across disciplines) meets weekly from September until February to plan this two-day event. We are excited to have you all attend and hope LSURC is an eye-opening, inspiring, and rewarding experience. 2020 Conference Theme Language Through Education: How can we apply linguistics and language science theories to educational practice? Language and education work like a two-way street: they influence each other, shaping the way we think and forming our ideas which can be shared amongst others. GRAMMATICALIZATION AND PROSODY: THE CASE OF ENGLISH SORT /KIND /TYPE OF CONSTRUCTIONS Nicole Dehé Katerina Stathi Universität Konstanz Leibniz Universität Hannover This article studies the relationship between prosody and desemanticization in grammaticaliza - tion processes by means of a well -described phenomenon, the grammaticalization of ‘type’ nouns (type , kind , sort ) in present-day English. To this end, 1,155 tokens of the three nouns, retrieved from the ICE-GB corpus, were semantically classified and prosodically analyzed. Our main result is that different synchronically coexisting prosodic patterns correspond to different degrees of grammaticalization. This result provides evidence that desemanticization and erosion proceed hand in hand. Introduction . This article investigates the relation between grammaticalization and prosody by means of a case study : the grammaticalization of so-called ‘type ’ nouns in English ( sort , kind , type ; SKT) in the construction N1 ( sort , kind , type ) of N2; see the examples in 1. Although it is frequently stated that grammaticalization processes are accompanied by phonological changes—mostly phonological reduction (attrition, erosion ) or loss—the relation between grammaticalization and prosody is understudied. Exaptation, Grammaticalization, and Reanalysis
Heiko Narrog Tohoku University Exaptation, Grammaticalization, and Reanalysis Abstract The goal of this paper is to argue that exaptation, as introduced into the study of language change by Lass (1990, 1997), in specific functional domains, is a limited alternative to grammaticalization. Exaptation, similarly to grammaticalization, leads to the formation of grammatical elements. Like grammaticalization, exaptation is based on the mechanism of reanalysis. It decisively differs from grammaticalization, however, as it implies change in the opposite direction, namely from material absorbed in the lexicon back to grammatical material. Two sets of data are presented as evidence for the replicability of this process. One involves the occurrence of exaptation across languages in a specific semantic domain, namely, the evolution of morphological causatives out of lexical verb patterns. The other data pertain to recurrent processes of exaptation in one language, namely in Japanese, where exaptation figures in the development of various morphological categories. In all cases of exaptation, reanalysis is crucially involved. This serves to show that reanalysis may be more fundamental to grammatical change than both grammaticalization and exaptation. Furthermore, it allows for change both with the usual directionality of grammaticalization and against it. 1. Introduction Even detractors of grammaticalization theory do not seriously challenge the fact that in the majority of cases the morphosyntactic and semantic development of grammatical material follows the paths outlined in the standard literature on grammaticalization. The two following California Linguistic Notes Volume XXXII No. 1 Winter, 2007 2 issues, however, potentially pose a critical challenge to the validity of the theory. First, there is the question of the theoretical status of grammaticalization as a coherent and unique concept.
