1. Sugarcane juice declared ‘national drink’ of Pakistan

The Pakistan government declared sugarcane juice as the “national drink” of the country.

 The announcement came after the government conducted a Twitter poll.  People were asked to decide on the country’s national drink with two other options i.e. orange and carrot.

 According to the poll, 7,616 people or 81 per cent cast their votes favouring sugarcane juice, 15 percent voted for orange juice while 4 percent chose carrot.

2. 'Samantha Express' to cover places linked to Ambedkar & Buddha

A special tourist train covering prominent places associated with chief architect of the Indian Constitution Dr BR Ambedkar and Gautam Buddha.

 The train will embark on its maiden journey on April 14 from .  The train, 'Samantha Express', will be run by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation.  The train will cover Chaityabhoomi (), Mhow (Indore), Bodhgaya (Gaya), (Varanasi), (Nautanwa), (Gorakhpur), Deekshabhoomi (Nagpur), all places linked with either Lord Buddha or Ambedkar.

3. Oxford chooses ‘Nari Shakti’ as Hindi word of 2018

Oxford dictionaries declared “Nari Shakti” as the Hindi word for the year 2018.

 The announcement was made during a session at the ongoing Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) at the Diggi Palace.  According to the Oxford dictionaries, the word has been derived from and is used today to symbolise women “taking charge of their lives”.  March 2018 recorded a large spike in the use of ‘Nari Shakti’ as discussion arose around the Government of ’s Nari Shakti Puraskar

4. Telangana to set up 'Save Tiger Protection Force'

The Telangana government has decided to form a 'State Tiger Protection Force' to save the Big Cat population in the State.

 The 112-member-armed STPF will be headed by an Assistant Conservator of Forests to protect tiger population in Amarabad and Kawal Tiger Reserves.  The State Forest Protection Committee headed by Chief Secretary S K Joshi took the decision to form the STPF at its meeting.  The Committee decided to act tough against those felling forest trees and committing other related crimes.  Cases under the Preventive Detention Act would be registered against violators.

5. Highlights of 70th Republic Day military parade

The nation celebrated its 70th Republic Day with a grand military parade at Rajpath in New Delhi.

 The President conferred the Chakra India's highest peacetime gallantry award to Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani, a militant-turned-soldier.  A major highlight of the parade was participation of four Indian National Army veterans -- Parmanand, Lalti Ram, Hira Singh and Bhagmal, all aged over 90 years -- for the first time.  'Nari Shakti' was on full display with an all-woman Assam Rifles contingent creating history by participating for the first time in the parade, which was led by Major Khushboo Kanwar.  Twenty-six children - six girls and 20 boys awardees of Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puruskar for their exceptional achievement also graced the occasion.

6. Naomi Osaka wins Australian Open Grand Slam Singles title

Japan's Naomi Osaka won her maiden Australian Open Grand Slam Singles title at Melbourne.

 She became the first Asian player to achieve the world number one ranking.  The 21-year-old also became the youngest women’s world number one since Dane Caroline Wozniacki, who was 20 when she topped the rankings in 2010.  In the Final, Osaka defeated Czech Petra Kvitova.

7. NRL receives 'Best Miniratna PSU' award

Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) has been awarded the best miniratna PSU in strategic performance.

 The award, comprising of a trophy, was presented to NRL MD S K Barua by Member of Parliament Manoj Tiwari and Poonam Dhillon at an award function held in New Delhi.  The awards are given out in recognition of the efforts of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) that have played a key role in the country’s growth.
