The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

The paper is divided into three parts. In the first part of the research surprised the early period can be placed throughout the XIXth century between Latreille and Dalla Torre. Before this period, references about platygastrids and scelionids were made by Linnaeus and Schrank, they are the ones who described the first platygastrid and scelionid respectively. In this the first period work entomologists as: Haliday, Westwood, Walker, Forster, Ashmead, Thomson, Howard, etc., the result of their work being the description of 699 scelionids species which are found quoted in Dalla Torre's catalogue. The second part of the paper is devoted to early 20th century. This vibrant work is marked by the work of two great entomologists: Kieffer and Dodd. In this period one publish the first and only global monograph of platygastrids and scelionids until now. In this monograph are twice the number of species than in Dalla Torre's catalogue which shows the magnitude of the systematic research of those moments. The third part of the paper refers to the late 20th and early 21st century. -
The Use of the Biodiverse Parasitoid Hymenoptera (Insecta) to Assess Arthropod Diversity Associated with Topsoil Stockpiled

Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT – This paper examines the species richness and abundance of the Hymenoptera parasitoid assemblage and assesses their potential to provide an indication of the arthropod diversity present in topsoil stockpiles as part of the Topsoil Management Program for Chevron Australia Pty Ltd Barrow Island Gorgon Project. Fifty six emergence trap samples were collected over a two year period (2011 and 2012) from six topsoil stockpiles and neighbouring undisturbed reference sites. An additional reference site that was close to the original source of the topsoil on Barrow Island was also sampled. A total of 14,538 arthropod specimens, representing 22 orders, were collected. A rich and diverse hymenopteran parasitoid assemblage was collected with 579 individuals, representing 155 species from 22 families. The abundance and species richness of parasitoid wasps had a strong positive linear relationship with the abundance of potential host arthropod orders which were found to be higher in stockpile sites compared to their respective neighbouring reference site. The species richness and abundance of new parasitoid wasp species yielded from the relatively small sample area indicates that there are many species on Barrow Island that still remain to be discovered. This study has provided an initial assessment of whether the hymenoptera parasitoid assemblage can give an indication of arthropod diversity. -

Uma nova espécie de Schizomyia (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae: Asphondyliini) associada com Tetrapteris phlomoides (Malpighiaceae). Schizomyia maricaensis sp. nov. é descrita e ilustrada com base na pupa, macho, fêmea e galha. Essa espécie induz galhas em forma de roseta em Tetrapterys phlomoides (Malpighiaceae). PALAVRAS-CHAVE. Galha, morfologia, taxonomia, restinga, Brasil. Tetrapterys phlomoides (Malpighiaceae) occurs in Schizomyia maricaensis sp. nov. Brazil. Scofield1,3 and Subhashree Subramanyam1,3* Abstract Background: The Hessian fly (Mayetiola destructor), belonging to the gall midge family (Cecidomyiidae), is a devastating pest of wheat (Triticum aestivum) causing significant yield losses. Despite identification and characterization of numerous Hessian fly-responsive genes and associated biological pathways involved in wheat defense against this dipteran pest, their functional validation has been challenging. This is largely attributed to the large genome, polyploidy, repetitive DNA, and limited genetic resources in hexaploid wheat. The diploid progenitor Aegilops tauschii, D-genome donor of modern-day hexaploid wheat, offers an ideal surrogate eliminating the need to target all three homeologous chromosomes (A, B and D) individually, and thereby making the functional validation of candidate Hessian fly-responsive genes plausible. Furthermore, the well-annotated sequence of Ae. tauschii genome and availability of genetic resources amenable to manipulations makes the functional assays less tedious and time-consuming. However, prior to utilization of this diploid genome for downstream studies, it is imperative to characterize its physical and molecular responses to Hessian fly. Results: In this study we screened five Ae. tauschii accessions for their response to the Hessian fly biotypes L and vH13. Two lines were identified that exhibited a homozygous resistance response to feeding by both Hessian fly biotypes. Studies using physical measurements and neutral red staining showed that the resistant Ae. -

Freudenstein Dr. Marymegan Daly Copyright by Charuwat Taekul 2012 ABSTRACT Wasps, Ants, Bees, and Sawflies one of the most familiar and important insects, are scientifically categorized in the order Hymenoptera. Parasitoid Hymenoptera display some of the most advanced biology of the order. Platygastroidea, one of the significant groups of parasitoid wasps, attacks host eggs more than 7 insect orders. Despite its success and importance, an understanding of this group is still unclear. I present here the world systematic revisions of two genera in Platygastroidea: Platyscelio Kieffer and Oxyteleia Kieffer, as well as introduce the first comprehensive molecular study of the most important subfamily in platygastroids as biological control benefit, Telenominae. For the systematic study of two Old World genera, I address the taxonomic history of the genus, identification key to species, as well as review the existing concepts and propose descriptive new species. Four new species of Platyscelio are discovered from South Africa, Western Australia, Botswana and Zimbabwe. Four species are considered to be junior synonyms of P. pulchricornis. Fron nine valid species of Oxyteleia, the new species are discovered throughout Indo-Malayan and Australasian regions in total of twenty-seven species. The genus Merriwa Dodd, 1920 is considered to be a new synonym. -
