HIV TRAVEL BAN REPEAL — 10 YEARS LATER This year marks 10 years since President Barack Obama repealed the HIV travel ban, which was re-authorized and signed into law by then-President George W. Bush in 2008. The travel and immigration ban, which lasted 22 years, prohibited HIV- positive foreign nationals from entering the U.S. unless they obtained a special waiver. HRC was a lead organization lobbying on Capitol Hill for the repeal of the ban. HRC worked closely with lawmakers and lobbied both the Bush and Obama administrations to remove the ban, mobilizing more than 19,000 members and supporters to submit statements in favor of ending the discriminatory policy when the proposed regulation lifting the ban was open for public comment in 2009. Still, more work remains to be done. That’s why HRC is ensuring that laws protect people living with HIV & AIDS, and HRC Foundation is educating the public to help remove the stigma around HIV & AIDS. Learn more at hrc.org/HIV.
