In Nanni Moretti's La Stanza Del Figlio
09-Mary Ann_0Syrimis 2/10/14 10:31 AM Page 113 MORETTI ’S CHILDREN : T HE NEXT GENERATION ? MARY ANN MCDONALD CAROLAN Summary : Nanni Moretti’s La stanza del figlio/The Son’s Room (2001) reveals the effects of a child’s death on the protagonist Giovanni (a psy - coanalyst played by Moretti) and his family. This film appears after Aprile/April (1998), which narrates both the birth of the director’s son Pietro as well as the Italian electoral campaign in 1996 in the month of the title. The arrival of a biological son followed by the death of a fic - tional one in Moretti’s oeuvre suggests greater implications for the par - ent-child relationship in Italy. This phenomenon also comments on the relationship between generations of Italian directors. An examination of Moretti’s earlier autobiographical film Caro diario/Dear Diary (1994) gives insight into this director’s relationship to other artists and also sug - gests implications for the future of Italian filmmaking. In Nanni Moretti’s La stanza del figlio /The Son’s Room (2001), the death of a child allows the narrative to explore the highly personal realm of grief. The title of Moretti’s film refers to a now uninhabited space that serves as a metaphor for the void in the family created by Andrea’s (Giuseppe Sanfelice) accidental drowning while scuba diving. The son’s death devas - tates his father Giovanni (Nanni Moretti), mother Paola (Laura Morante), and sister Irene (Jasmine Trinca). Moretti examines the family members’ reactions to this unimaginable loss that leads ultimately to a redefinition of self. -

What to Wear for Dinghy Sailing -‐ Some Notes to Help New Sailors Choos
What to wear for dinghy sailing - some notes to help new sailors choose the right kit. We try to give all our “Learn to Sail” trainees good basic advice about what to wear to stay warm and dry. When it comes to buying the right kit for the right conditions, the choices can be bewildering and seemingly endless. What style of Wetsuit? Which manufacturer? Where to buy? You don't have to spend a fortune to sail comfortably, and you do need to have an idea of priorities. There are essentials and “nice to haves”. Get the essentials to start and don't rush your spending decisions on the “nice to haves”. For both safety and comfort there are 3 basic sailing-specific essentials for dinghy sailing on Lake Ontario: a wet suit, gloves, and water shoes. All other necessary sailing apparel can likely be comprised of re-purposed sports equipment: examples Lycra jogging pants, skiing base layers, baseball caps and out-door hiking clothing. Avoid cotton clothing as it absorbs and holds water. If you're new to sailing, then make note of what the instructors and other sailors are wearing. No one will mind you asking for their opinions on the suitability of their choices or best places to purchase. If in any doubt, please ask for advice. My general advice is make use of what you already own, and then as you learn more buy what you need. Also if you're not sure or have questions we'll go over all this in more detail during the first class. -

Popular Culture Imaginings of the Mulatta: Constructing Race, Gender
Popular Culture Imaginings of the Mulatta: Constructing Race, Gender, Sexuality, and Nation in the United States and Brazil A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Jasmine Mitchell IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Bianet Castellanos, Co-adviser Erika Lee, Co-adviser AUGUST 2013 © Jasmine Mitchell 2013 Acknowledgements This dissertation would have been impossible without a community of support. There are many numerous colleagues, family, friends, and mentors that have guided ths intellectual and personal process. I would first like to acknowledge my dissertation committee for their patience, enthusiasm, and encouragement while I was in Minneapolis, New York, São Paulo, and everywhere in between. I am thankful for the research and methodological expertise they contributed as I wrote on race, gender, sexuality, and popular culture through an interdisciplinary and hemispheric approach. Special gratitude is owed to my co-advisors, Dr. Bianet Castellanos and Dr. Erika Lee for their guidance, commitment, and willingness to read and provide feedback on multiple drafts of dissertation chapters and applications for various grants and fellowships to support this research. Their wisdom, encouragement, and advice for not only this dissertation, but also publications, job searches, and personal affairs were essential to my success. Bianet and Erika pushed me to rethink the concepts used within the dissertation, and make more persuasive and clearer arguments. I am also grateful to my other committee members, Dr. Fernando Arenas, Dr. Jigna Desai, and Dr. Roderick Ferguson, whose advice and intellectual challenges have been invaluable to me. -

My Clothing and the Weather
MY CLOTHING AND THE WEATHER Goals of this lesson: Youth will: Understand how clothing provides protection from the weather. Understand how to dress for the weather they will be in. What You Need to Know: Clothing protects us from the sun, rain, wind and cold weather. Different types of clothing are best to wear in different kinds of weather. People can also protect themselves from the weather by shielding themselves with tents, umbrellas, sun visors or sunglasses. Cotton fabric absorbs moisture and is comfortable to wear in hot weather. Polyester, nylon and other human-made fibers do not absorb moisture and are uncomfortable to wear in hot weather. Black or dark-colored clothing absorbs heat from the sun and is warmer to wear than white or light-colored clothing. Materials Needed: Large pieces of paper. Markers Glue Magazine pictures of clothing. Variety of clothing Thermometer Large piece of plastic Brown wrapping paper Pencils Scissors Thick cardboard One large nail Shoelaces or pieces of heavy waxed twine Learning Activities: Experiment 1 – Do this experiment in the sun. Put one thermometer under a dark colored hat and one thermometer under a light colored hat. Wait 15 minutes. Check to see if there has been an increase in the temperature. (The dark-colored hat should have absorbed more heat and the temperature should be somewhat higher than the thermometer under the light-colored hat.) Experiment 2 – Spread a large piece of plastic on the ground and arrange a variety of clothing made of different fabrics (windbreaker or coated rain coat, 100% cotton T-shirt, and fabric treated with a liquid repellent such as Scotchgard). -
