Beals’ partnership with C40 will help raise awareness about the bold climate action underway in leading cities driving forward solutions to the climate crisis worldwide. As C40 Goodwill Ambassador Jennifer will also focus on promoting climate education. She will support and amplify the voices of inspiring and dedicated young climate activists in raising awareness of the climate emergency the world is facing. Beals will also play a leading role in C40’s Women4Climate Initiative, helping to celebrate the incredible leadership being delivered by women around the world in climate action. Jennifer Beals said: “I am thrilled to be taking on this responsibility as C40 Goodwill Ambassador. I want a future in which people can breathe clean air, swim in clear, plastic-free water, cycle and walk on accessible city streets, and live safely and sustainably. All of the amazing young people out on the streets this Friday calling for immediate climate action deserve that future - which is why we all have a responsibility to help make it happen. I am determined to use my role to continue to raise awareness about the solutions we already have to address the climate crisis. Additionally I will use my role to highlight the reality that it will take the dedication of all, not just some to solve the climate crisis. With the full knowledge that no singular generation should bear the weight of this burden, I will support the young people who are showing us what climate leadership looks like. I will advocate for all generations to have a place at the political table when it comes to decision-making regarding this crisis which impacts us all.” “I am delighted to be announcing Jennifer Beals as a C40 Goodwill Ambassador,” said Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris and Chair of C40. “The dedicated, driven voices of young people around the world have been calling for action to prevent climate breakdown. Jennifer’s energy and enthusiasm to answer these voices and engage with this incredible movement is exactly why we are excited to have her join us. Jennifer’s commitment to reducing plastic pollution, raising awareness of the solutions to the climate crisis, and showcasing the work being done on the ground to encourage healthy and sustainable living is admirable - and I am convinced we can achieve a lot together.” - ENDS - PRESS RELEASE Notes: About the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group Around the world, C40 Cities connects 94 of the world’s greatest cities to take bold climate action, leading the way towards a healthier and more sustainable future. • In Nanni Moretti's La Stanza Del Figlio
09-Mary Ann_0Syrimis 2/10/14 10:31 AM Page 113 MORETTI ’S CHILDREN : T HE NEXT GENERATION ? MARY ANN MCDONALD CAROLAN Summary : Nanni Moretti’s La stanza del figlio/The Son’s Room (2001) reveals the effects of a child’s death on the protagonist Giovanni (a psy - coanalyst played by Moretti) and his family. This film appears after Aprile/April (1998), which narrates both the birth of the director’s son Pietro as well as the Italian electoral campaign in 1996 in the month of the title. The arrival of a biological son followed by the death of a fic - tional one in Moretti’s oeuvre suggests greater implications for the par - ent-child relationship in Italy. This phenomenon also comments on the relationship between generations of Italian directors. An examination of Moretti’s earlier autobiographical film Caro diario/Dear Diary (1994) gives insight into this director’s relationship to other artists and also sug - gests implications for the future of Italian filmmaking. In Nanni Moretti’s La stanza del figlio /The Son’s Room (2001), the death of a child allows the narrative to explore the highly personal realm of grief. The title of Moretti’s film refers to a now uninhabited space that serves as a metaphor for the void in the family created by Andrea’s (Giuseppe Sanfelice) accidental drowning while scuba diving. The son’s death devas - tates his father Giovanni (Nanni Moretti), mother Paola (Laura Morante), and sister Irene (Jasmine Trinca). Moretti examines the family members’ reactions to this unimaginable loss that leads ultimately to a redefinition of self.

There are many numerous colleagues, family, friends, and mentors that have guided ths intellectual and personal process. I would first like to acknowledge my dissertation committee for their patience, enthusiasm, and encouragement while I was in Minneapolis, New York, São Paulo, and everywhere in between. I am thankful for the research and methodological expertise they contributed as I wrote on race, gender, sexuality, and popular culture through an interdisciplinary and hemispheric approach. Special gratitude is owed to my co-advisors, Dr. Bianet Castellanos and Dr. Erika Lee for their guidance, commitment, and willingness to read and provide feedback on multiple drafts of dissertation chapters and applications for various grants and fellowships to support this research. Their wisdom, encouragement, and advice for not only this dissertation, but also publications, job searches, and personal affairs were essential to my success. Bianet and Erika pushed me to rethink the concepts used within the dissertation, and make more persuasive and clearer arguments. I am also grateful to my other committee members, Dr. Fernando Arenas, Dr. Jigna Desai, and Dr. Roderick Ferguson, whose advice and intellectual challenges have been invaluable to me.

Volume 11, Issue 1 May 2014 The Lesbian Intimate: Capacities for feeling in convergent media contexts Sarah Cefai, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK Abstract: This article claims that the expression of the ‘lesbian intimate’ is both a condition of possibility and the outcome of convergent lesbian media. The claim is grounded on the intersection of two major shifts in the publicity of feeling: the civic incorporation of lesbian desire (culminating in legislative equity for lesbian and gay subjects) intersecting with the shift of intimacy from private to public life (epitomised by the elevation of the intimate to a national concern).

“WE CAN’T EVEN PLAY OURSELVES”: MIXED-RACE ACTRESSES IN THE EARLY TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI'I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN AMERICAN STUDIES AUGUST 2017 By Valerie M. Lo Dissertation Committee: Robert Perkinson, Chairperson Mari Yoshihara Jonna Eagle Konrad Ng Jonathan Okamura Keywords: Mixed race, Ambiguity, Post-Racial, Color-blind, Film ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project has been a test of my resiliency and grew from my desire to add a small contribution to the ongoing discussion of mixed race representations in film and television. Many people have come into my life in the last several years and encouraged my studies, talked excitedly with me, and subtly (or blatantly) pushed me to continue when I thought the road ahead looked too ominous. In 2005, at San Francisco State University’s Asian American Studies banquet, my Master’s thesis chair, Wei Ming Dariotis, remarked that a PhD was in the stars for me. Those words stayed close to me during my graduate work at the University of Hawai'i. My first teaching assistantship with Isabelle Peluad at San Francisco State University in Asian American Literature showed me exactly what I wanted to immerse myself in for the rest of my life. Graduate courses with Russell Jeung and Madeline Hsu reaffirmed my desire to work within the field of Asian American Studies and continue on to a doctorate program. My coursework in American Studies was rigorous and pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way.

My child's preschool has crumb rubber safety mats under all the outdoor play gyms. In the summer heat, it smells. A local museum has the same crumb rubber matting under an indoor play space. It stinks up the building. This affects more than just athletes who bear the brunt of the burden. Just test the materials already!
