Scope and Contents note The Stanford Historical Society's Oral History Program explores the institutional history of the University, with an emphasis on the transformative post-WWII period, through interviews with leading faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, and others. The project furthers the Society's mission "to foster and support the documentation, study, publication, and preservation of the history of the Leland Stanford Junior University." Like any primary source material, oral history is not intended to present the final, verified, or complete narrative of events. It is a unique, reflective, spoken account, offered by the interviewee in response to questioning, and as such it may be deeply personal. By capturing the flavor of incidents, events, and personalities, the oral history approach provides details and viewpoints that are not often found in traditional records. Transcripts in this collection are lightly edited by program staff and by Interviewees to correct grammar and occasional inaccuracies. Audio, however, is not edited. Alumni interviews Series 1 1999-2020 Scope and Contents note Includes a videocassette and audiocassette of the alumni reunion session held on Oct. 14, 1999; audio recordings and transcripts of interviews with alumni from the class of 1957 done during the class reunions held on campus during the fall quarter, 2007; and audio recordings and transcripts of the Alumni Stories project. The Alumni Stories project was piloted during Reunion Homecoming Weekend in October 2007, and was repeated in October 2008. Over 60 alumni, most attending their 50th reunions, recounted their memories and stories about undergraduate student life in the 1950s.     At a meeting of the FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES on May 16, 2006, the following tribute to the life and service of the late Howard Wilson Emmons was spread upon the permanent records of the Faculty. HOWARD WILSON EMMONS BORN: August 30, 1912 DIED: November 20, 1998 Howard Wilson Emmons, Gordon McKay Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Emeritus, and Abbott and James Lawrence Professor of Engineering, Emeritus, the father of and a leading contributor to modern home fire research, died in his 86th year on November 20, 1998. Before Howard and his many doctoral students and visiting fellows conducted their path- breaking body of fundamental fire science research, the primary approach to home fires was to develop techniques for fire suppression. When discussing fires in homes, Howard often reminded us that to make a fire requires more than just fuel for combustion; it depends on the overall arrangement of the combustible materials as well as on their material properties. He often said that every Boy Scout knows that one dry log by itself does not make a campfire, but a triangular arrangement of three logs with kindling makes a nice one. It was the overall interaction among all of the ingredients of a fire-combustion, the convection of the hot gasses, the products of combustion, radiation among the components and to other objects nearby, control of the air supply, and lastly the chemistry of the reactions––that fascinated Howard over the last decades of his long and productive research career. He was born on August 30, 1912, in Morristown, New Jersey, and educated in local public schools.

Consultation: Access to Services, Finance, Legal; Regeneration, Cultural Services, Highways; Recommendation: It is recommended that Cabinet:- 1) Notes the findings of the review and authorises the Head of Cultural Services, in consultation and collaboration with the relevant Cabinet Members, to: 1.1 Commission interpretation where the place name is identified as having links to exploitation or the slave trade, via QR or other information tools; 1.2 Direct the further research required of the working group in exploring information and references, including new material as it comes forward, as well as new proposals for inclusion gleaned through collaboration and consultation with the community and their representatives; 1.3 Endorse the positive action of an invitation for responses that reflect all our communities and individuals of all backgrounds and abilities, including black history, lgbtq+ , cultural and ethnic diversity, in future commissions for the city’s arts strategy, events and creative programmes, blue plaque and other cultural activities; 1.4 Compile and continuously refresh the list of names included in Appendix B, in collaboration with community representatives, to be published and updated, as a reference tool for current and future opportunities in destination/ street naming.

    Brief biography of professor Richard Zare Born on 19 November, 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, Dr. Richard Zare is the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor in Natural Science, Department of Chemistry, Stanford University. His research covers many different areas but is quite noted for advances in laser chemistry, resulting in a greater understanding of chemical reactions at the molecular level and contributing very significantly to solving a variety of problems in chemical analysis. His development of laser induced fluorescence as a method for studying reaction dynamics has been widely adopted in other laboratories. Awards include the U.S. National Medal of Science (1983), the Welch Award in Chemistry (1999), the Wolf Prize in Chemistry (2005), the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Basic Sciences (2010), and the King Faisal International Prize in Science (2011). He has also received honorary doctorates from Uppsala University and Chalmers Institute of Technology among other institutions. His memberships include the National Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society, the Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Indian Academy of Sciences, and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for developing countries. From 1992 to 1998, he served on the National Science Board, the policy making board of the United States National Science Foundation, the last two years as its Chair. He presently chairs COSEPUP, the Committee on Science, Engineering and Public Policy of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine. Burke, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Donald Burke joined the chemistry department as an assistant professor after receiving a PhD at the University of Califormia, Berkeley, and postdoctoral studies at the University of Colorado. It is the sort of thing they might have used on Star Trek, if they could have found a way to work it into the plot. They had creatures made from gigantic crystals, swarms of microscopic robots with a collective consciousness, and creatures that floated through outer space. Vulcan biochemistry was different enough that it used copper in place of iron to carry oxygen. Why not a cellular life form devoid of proteins, that used RNA molecules to perform catalysis and maintain genetic information? For the most part, if a macromolecule is doing work in a cell here on earth, that molecule is a protein, with a few notable, but isolated exceptions. Does it have to be that way? Can RNA replace proteins or even repair metabolic damage wrought by proteins that misbehave? The question lies at the heart of some avenues of biomedical and microbial engineering, and the answer may reveal much about the earliest forms of life on earth. The last four decades have seen a steady shift in the perception of RNA's role in biology.

Among the numerous rosters, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is perhaps the most well known league, having made the popularity of pay-per-view soar in recent decades. Attempting to categorise professional wrestling, particularly the WWE franchise, appears problematic. With brutally executed manoeuvres in each match, there’s no disputing that athletic prowess is required. Yet as violent as the wrestlers’ moves look, the majority of matches are scripted and the winner decided beforehand. That the outcomes of matches were predetermined was once a well-guarded secret, but now an openly discussed reality. In WWE, ‘plotlines’ between characters can unfold over a number of years like a drawn out soap opera. But even ‘worked’ sequences can present real danger to the wrestlers. So is it heavily constructed entertainment, or is it a sport? As with many of the ‘answers’ to questions surrounding professional wrestling, it is an inextricably woven combination of both. WWE Commentator, Scott Stanford, illustrates that it’s “run for both sporting and television entertainment: you’re combining a live in-arena show with a television show week after week, no reruns.” Staunch supporters might be expected to aggressively argue its validity as a ‘real sport’.
