From an analysis of his experimental Iprowess, his written contributions, his lectures, and even from the details of the illustrations he used in his published papers or during his lectures to scientific and other audiences, Ahmed Zewail, by this or any other definition, was a stylist par excellence. For more than a quarter of a century, I interacted with Ahmed (and members of his family) very regularly. Sometimes he and I spoke several times a week during long-distance calls. Despite our totally different backgrounds we became the strongest of friends, and we got on with one another like the proverbial house on fire. We collaborated scientifi- cally and we adjudicated one another’s work, as well as that of others. We frequently exchanged culturally interesting stories. We each relished the challenge of delivering popular lectures. In common with very many others, I deem him to be unforgettable, for a variety of different reasons. He was one of the intellectually ablest persons that I have ever met. He possessed elemental energy. He executed a succession of brilliant experiments. And, almost single-handedly, he created the subject of femtochemistry, with all its magnificent manifestations and ramifications. From the time we first began to exchange ideas, I felt a growing affinity for his personality and attitude. This was reinforced when I told him that, ever since I was a teenager, I had developed a deep interest in Egyptology and a love for modern Egypt. -

Brief biography of professor Richard Zare Born on 19 November, 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, Dr. Richard Zare is the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor in Natural Science, Department of Chemistry, Stanford University. His research covers many different areas but is quite noted for advances in laser chemistry, resulting in a greater understanding of chemical reactions at the molecular level and contributing very significantly to solving a variety of problems in chemical analysis. His development of laser induced fluorescence as a method for studying reaction dynamics has been widely adopted in other laboratories. Awards include the U.S. National Medal of Science (1983), the Welch Award in Chemistry (1999), the Wolf Prize in Chemistry (2005), the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Basic Sciences (2010), and the King Faisal International Prize in Science (2011). He has also received honorary doctorates from Uppsala University and Chalmers Institute of Technology among other institutions. His memberships include the National Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society, the Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Indian Academy of Sciences, and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for developing countries. From 1992 to 1998, he served on the National Science Board, the policy making board of the United States National Science Foundation, the last two years as its Chair. He presently chairs COSEPUP, the Committee on Science, Engineering and Public Policy of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine. A Retirement Celebration Honoring Prof. Robert K. Boeckman, Jr. was born August 26, 1944 in Pasadena, California. After early schooling in Dayton, Ohio, he received his Bachelors of Science degree in Chemistry in 1966 from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University). He moved on to Brandeis University where he received the Ph.D. degree under the supervision of James B. Hendrickson and Ernest Grunwald in 1970. He then joined the research group of Gilbert Stork in 1970 as an NIH postdoctoral fellow. He began his academic career at Wayne State University in 1972, where he rose to the rank of Professor in 1979. In 1980, he joined the faculty of the University of Rochester where he is currently Marshall D. Gates Jr. Professor of Chemistry. In 1976, he was married to Mary H. Delton. Among his academic honors are included an A.P. Sloan Fellowship, a Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health, and an ACS Cope Scholar Award. He has been a Fellow of the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, was twice awarded an Alexander Von Humboldt Stiftung Research Prize for Senior Scientists, and named a Marshall Gates Scholar by the University of Rochester. He is an inaugural ACS Fellow and a Fellow of the AAAS. From 1997 until 2016, he served as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Organic Chemistry. Burke, Assistant Professor of Chemistry Donald Burke joined the chemistry department as an assistant professor after receiving a PhD at the University of Califormia, Berkeley, and postdoctoral studies at the University of Colorado. We are indebted to him for this summary of the ongoing efforts in his and others' laborotories in this exciting research area. The Editors RNA-based life? It is the sort of thing they might have used on Star Trek, if they could have found a way to work it into the plot. They had creatures made from gigantic crystals, swarms of microscopic robots with a collective consciousness, and creatures that floated through outer space. Vulcan biochemistry was different enough that it used copper in place of iron to carry oxygen. Why not a cellular life form devoid of proteins, that used RNA molecules to perform catalysis and maintain genetic information? For the most part, if a macromolecule is doing work in a cell here on earth, that molecule is a protein, with a few notable, but isolated exceptions. Does it have to be that way? Can RNA replace proteins or even repair metabolic damage wrought by proteins that misbehave? The question lies at the heart of some avenues of biomedical and microbial engineering, and the answer may reveal much about the earliest forms of life on earth. The last four decades have seen a steady shift in the perception of RNA's role in biology. -

ROBERT BURNS WOODWARD April 10, 1917–July 8, 1979 BY ELKAN BLOUT OBERT BURNS WOODWARD was the preeminent organic chemist Rof the twentieth century. This opinion is shared by his colleagues, students, and by other distinguished chemists. Bob Woodward was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and was an only child. His father died when Bob was less than two years old, and his mother had to work hard to support her son. His early education was in the Quincy, Massachusetts, public schools. During this period he was allowed to skip three years, thus enabling him to finish grammar and high schools in nine years. In 1933 at the age of 16, Bob Woodward enrolled in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study chemistry, although he also had interests at that time in mathematics, literature, and architecture. His unusual talents were soon apparent to the MIT faculty, and his needs for individual study and intensive effort were met and encouraged. Bob did not disappoint his MIT teachers. He received his B.S. degree in 1936 and completed his doctorate in the spring of 1937, at which time he was only 20 years of age. Immediately following his graduation Bob taught summer school at the University of Illinois, but then returned to Harvard’s Department of Chemistry to start a productive period with an assistantship under Professor E. -

A life like a beaker, full of molecules and surprises (Conversation with Prof. Richard N. Zare) Dr. Giacomo Melani Sometimes we get the chance to meet great people, whom for instance we admire for their professional accomplishments or successes, although quite often we just read or hear about them in books or journals. To me, great scientists have always created this sense of fascination. One of them is for sure Richard N. Zare. In my second year of the undergraduate degree in chemistry in Pisa, I happened to read an interview of him between the chapters of the Skoog and West “Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry”. It was mainly devoted to his contributions to the field of laser spectroscopy, being Zare the discoverer of a technique named “Laser-Induced Fluorescence”, or LIF. But Richard Zare has not been just a pioneer of spectroscopic techniques in chemistry, since in his more than half-a-century career he has contributed to many different fields in the chemical sciences, from reaction dynamics to micro-analysis for biomedicine. All of this to say that the name of “Dick” Zare stacked in my head and I kept reading of his work and also of his articles related to chemical education, being him a chaired professor at Stanford University for more than 30 years. A few days ago I accidentally came across one of his commentaries, which he wrote for the Journal of Chemical Education, entitled “On the Love of Teaching and the Challenge of Online Learning: A Few Reflections”. Strange enough, this article was not written as a result of the ongoing distance teaching due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but already in the year 2000. -

National Academy of Sciences - Biographical Memoirs http://www.nasonline.org/publications/biographical-memoirs/online-collection.html By Michael P. Filosa Flack Norris (1871-1940) for the November Nucleus, I came across his biographical memoir on the website of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). This memoir was written by John D. Roberts and was presented to the Academy in 1974, a scant(!) 34 years after his death. The NAS was founded in 1863 by 50 of the most prominent scientists in the United States, and its initial charter was signed by Abraham Lincoln. It is a tradition that each of its members be memorialized in a memoir to the Academy written by a peer (or two). These memoirs are a treasure trove of the history of science. The sole weakness is that they are posthumous and not necessarily, very timely. However, they are quite thorough and a good overview of the scientists, complete with a detailed listing of their major works. During my school years, I was always intrigued with stories about great scientists. Dan Kemp would talk extensively about his thesis advisor, R. B. Woodward, and his works. Those stories about Woodward (1917-1979) and also Gilbert Stork were very influential in my decision to pursue synthetic organic chemistry as a career. Woodward’s memoir was written by Elkan Blout (with assistance from Frank Westheimer) and was published in 2001, a “scant” 22 years after his death. The memoirs are often glowing: “Robert Burns Woodward was the preeminent organic chemist of the twentieth century. This opinion is shared by his colleagues, students and by other distinguished chemists.” Blout includes lengthy commentaries from Sir Derek Barton, Roald Hoffman and Albert Eschenmoser in the memoir. -
